Really? I heard the opposite. I heard that he was a fan of the show, and watched it on TV whilst making the games. Either way, it's an obvious homage.

Tails is Sonic's tech savvy best friend, not his son.
His personality and role is very similar to Gohan's, and I suppose you could add the Bulma aspect for his tech-savvyness. Though considering it's Gohan, and what he goes on to become, I'd say you could consider Tails as being kid and adult Gohan at the same time; what Gohan would likely be if he wasn't forced into getting involved into all that crazy fighting. The 'happy-go-lucky tag-along nerd kid who helps more with his mind than his body' archetype.
Fair point, I didn't really give it as much thought as that.

Silver is a novice, gullible, naive child with a gift.

Future Trunks is a fierce, courageous, cool, kind-hearted and experienced warrior.

I do not see the similarities. I see more sense comparing Silver to dr. Emmett Brown. Both white-haired and "In need of help".

You guys should watch Super Mario Bros. Z, if you haven't already, on Newgrounds. Awesome blend of the Dragon Ball universe with the Mario and Sonic universes.

On the topic...don't most series that have science fiction parts in them have a badass time-traveller who comes to save the future and whatnot? I'm thinking it's a very common character archetype. A better comparison would be Future Hiro from Heroes: a time traveller from the future who warns our heroes of the approaching danger and even has a sword. Masi Oka himself drew comparisons to the two characters.

I wonder... what science fictionish series _don't_ have a timetraveling badass from the future...?
... Besides Starwars...

Granted, mine is undeniably a Trunks ripoff. But what'r'ya gonna do?

Heck, X-men has at least three... just off the top of my head. Although, I think they all predated Trunks. (I dunno, was Bishop introduced before Trunks? Not that I'd call Bishop anything resembling a Trunks ripoff... :P ).

Trunks is just a little older than Bishop. :P Trunks first appeared in July 1991 and Bishop appeared in November 1991.

That takes place in a separate universe to the games.
