I have a feeling that his current avatar answers that.

Also, love Spirit vs. Spirit. I loved it even before the scene in the dub premiered I believe, and it was one of the songs that helped me get into the Japanese score back in the day. I was a Faulconer score fan back in the day because it was what I was most familiar with in terms of what was used in the show at the time. I was first introduced through the Shuki Levy scored FUNimation Ocean cast dub's rerun hell, then grew to like Faulconer as well at the time it aired, though, at first I liked it only because it was "OMG DBZ", but grew to genuinely like it back then. These days any enjoyment I get out of the Faulconer score (when used in DBZ at least) is out of nostalgia, though I think some tracks are pretty good on their own.

I didn't know that the Movies 1 and 2 dubs on TV were using Japanese music at the time, just that they sounded older, so the kid in me who thought DBZ represented everything "cool" and "modern" didn't like it at the time. I then downloaded a few years later a clip of Goku's Super Saiyan transformation in Japanese, and quickly realized the music was from movie 1, which then I realized meant that was the Japanese score, and also realized that the music was actually catchy and memorable, since I hadn't thought of the Japanese score until then, yet instantly recognized it (and even pinpointed it being from the scene with Garlic Jr. opening the Dead Zone). I then started downloaded clips and episodes from later in the series, and grew to love the Japanese score as well.

So back then, I was a dub score fan (both dub scores shown in the US), and a Japanese score fan, and had plenty of Faulconer and Japanese score tracks on my PC at the time. I probably recognized the Japanese show as a whole as being superior, but still liked the dub as much due to familiarity and being interested in seeing how the dub would handle the scenes and episodes I'd downloaded.

...

Wow... That really started drifting away from the topic at hand didn't it?

I never really liked Spirit vs Spirit either, it just sounds too much like some random cheesy 80s love song (the tune itself, not the lyrics) for my taste.

Again, have you looked at the lyrics? Second, that's not the entire point of the scene. Yes, Gohan is angry. But he's also scared, confused, and a variety of other emotions. The scene marks where he lets it all out. He doesn't just want/have to defeat Cell, he also wants to protect his friends and his home planet.

Hell, it's that same anger that leads to more people dying.
I feel the exact same way with Gohan Angers too, just saying.

Like somebody else said, Spirit vs Spirit is very overrated. It isn't a bad song, it certainly is to my taste, but I don't believe it fit that particular scene. The thing I think Spirit vs Spirit was trying to go for was a silent anger, and sadness. I don't believe that's what the manga tried to present when Gohan went Super Saiyan Two. Gohan Angers presented Gohans anger in my opinion, pouring out, and his coming of age. You knew someone was about get thrashed when you heard it.

This transformation wasn't about that. This was a side of Gohan that he himself feared. The only reason why he let his anger boil over was because he needed to for the sake protect everything he cherishes.
