Egh. This release annoys me, because it means that we're gonna have to wait even longer for another good english release of the Dragon Ball manga i.e. Kanzenbans. Seriously now, why can't Viz just release those?

Well, shit...I guess I should probably get myself all the Viz bigs now, since this release isn't even worth bothering. Hopefully we'll get the Kazenabans....right

Forget the Kanzenbans, I want this color version of the manga released here. They must have jumped the gun on this release, because otherwise, this would be the perfect time to start releasing something like that...NessMudkip wrote:Egh. If given the option, I'd vastly prefer the Kanzenbans over the crappy recolorings.Mewzard wrote:Forget the Kanzenbans, I want this color version of the manga released here. If you're not here soon... GET ON!
Re: New 3-in-1 Editions in Summer 2013
Probably to save them money. I can imagine the Vizbigs cost a sizable amount more than 3-in-1's to make.the original ero-sennin wrote:It's confusing to me that VIZ would roll out a release of the series that is of lower quality than the existing VIZBIG volumes. That's a huge bummer.
Oh, and I've changed the thread title.

Right. I think these are made to be a cheap option for people curious about DB rather than collectors. I think because the ad says "Dragon Ball" without the "Z," it will be for the first part of the series, which I imagine does not sell as well as the Z volumes.
I think the 3-in-1 volumes serve a purpose to get people who are hesitant to pick up long series a chance to sample it or get caught up to a point where they would buy the full-price volumes.

Well, that pretty much solves it for me then. I need to get the rest of the VizBigs before they become hard to find.

If these are lower quality than the VizBigs, what's the point in them? Cheaper retail price?
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Pretty much, and they're also much more cheaply made. I don't have any numbers obviously, but...well, again, taking into account the general flimsiness of the 3-in-1's that I've seen, I pretty much refuse to believe those cost that much to make in comparison to the much nicer Vizbigs.

I think the VizBigs are already pretty cheap, but yeah that's the only thing I can think of, just milking the cow.Saiga wrote:If these are lower quality than the VizBigs, what's the point in them? Cheaper retail price?
Ah well, time to gather the VizBigs, I'll just have to make do with them for the moment.

Re: VIZ 3-in-1 Editions Coming Summer 2013
They're certainly not as nice as the Rurouni Kenshin ones, that's for sure. Those had a touched up script (when the first time around translation was already pretty good I believe), much better use of the color pages, still had all the chapter pages where they belong (something I've noticed none of our DB manga releases is very good about), and even had bonus information about the Meiji period in Japan stuffed into the back, to bring even more real world context into the series. Then to top it off the last volume of them had both one-shots following the series, one of which you had to have a specific issue of the US SJ magazine to have, and the other had never been officially released here at all. I don't know for a fact, but I'm under the impression that the last DB Vizbig didn't give us squat that we didn't have before, so...yeah.Sin wrote:I think the VizBigs are already pretty cheap, but yeah that's the only thing I can think of, just milking the cow.

Damn, I hate how the DB manga is handled, it's just wrong and has so much that could be fixed very easily. It's a shame really, I don't think we will ever see a definitive release, certainly not in these 3-in-1's coming.Gyt Kaliba wrote:They're certainly not as nice as the Rurouni Kenshin ones, that's for sure. Re: VIZ 3-in-1 Editions Coming Summer 2013
Yeah, in that ad it says the VizBigs contain "updated content." Anybody know what content was updated for the VizBigs? I bought the first 2 DB and DBZ VizBigs when they were released and didn't notice anything different from the regular volumes, except IIRC they opted for the censored versions in some cases.
Re: VIZ 3-in-1 Editions Coming Summer 2013
They are retailing for $3 cheaper ($2 less with Amazon discounting them) each so it makes sense. If you are talking buying the entire series (14 VIZBIG volumes) then that is a good $42 difference to someone new to the manga. Some may also prefer the more traditional size, and I could see bookstores reluctant to order the VIZBIG volumes because they do not fit on a manga sized shelf. The lower quality (we assume at least based on previous 3 in 1 volumes from Viz) is a downside for the reduced price, but it makes sense.

Re: VIZ 3-in-1 Editions Coming Summer 2013
Only thing I fear as I'm just getting them is that they will be out of stock, resuplied by the inferior editions and some sh********rs will sell them for like 100 dollars for one, like it happened with Dragon Box.Insertclevername wrote:Well, shit...I guess I should probably get myself all the Viz bigs now, since this release isn't even worth bothering. Please, I only want the english text the legal way and importing it like retard, paying 15-20% from the price more for the import!!!! Ugh

For someone that owns a 3 in 1 or has seen them in person, are these any good? I mean as paper quality, durability, etc. I'm asking cause I've been debating myself over getting the 3 in 1's of Fullmetal Alchemist that VIZ is currently releasing or to get the manga box set.

On the subject of VizBigs, I've been curious about something -- unfortunately not ALL of the color pages are reprinted in color in these editions. Was this the same with the Kanzenbans? Do they have any of the color pages in gray scale or are they all reprinted in color? I'm curious about both the full-color pages and the limited palette pages.

Nope they don't, they have full color pages in it's entirety of full color sections. I can confirm that physically, as I have, uhm, scans of themmedama_oyaji wrote:On the subject of VizBigs, I've been curious about something -- unfortunately not ALL of the color pages are reprinted in color in these editions. Get the box set. The 3-in-1's paper is like the paper in the regular edition, except that it is thinner, and its too thin.Codarik wrote:For someone that owns a 3 in 1 or has seen them in person, are these any good?
