Viewing Update: Well, I'm now done with both the Baby saga and the Super 17 saga.

As for the Baby saga, I actually liked it quite a bit! I thought Goku's tail-stretching was a great side-story, and I'm glad that Baby had an actual goal. Some villains' goal is just "destroy everything", which I don't particularly like...I don't find that to be very interesting. But given that Baby had a real goal, a reason to be destructive, and an end-game planned out, I appreciated that. Also, c'mon...SSJ4! I don't care if its canon or non-canon, SSJ4 is pretty cool, in my opinion. I like the idea of being able to control the Oozaru power as being SSJ4, versus just conjuring some extra power. The idea that Goku's always been able to be an SSJ4 (when he had his tail), but he just could never control it before, was a cool idea. I'm also glad that Piccolo was involved in the end, and again proved how badass he is! All-in-all, I think this saga has been my favorite in GT so far.

In regards to the Super 17 saga, I felt like it was a throwaway. I went back to the episode guide and I guess I didn't realize how short it was (only 7 episodes according to Funimation), but I feel like I barely remember it...and I just watched it! This is like the "Garlic Jr." of GT, ha. I barely remember what happened, and I'm sensing that the events will never be addressed again or really affect the remainder of the series. The only thing I actually liked in this saga was Piccolo helping Goku escape Hell by going crazy in Heaven, ha. I thought that was amusing, but otherwise I think I could have done without this saga, personally.

I've started on the Shadow Dragon saga, but I'll reserve judgement until I finish it. I will say that I liked the original premise for it, the negative energy building up in the DBs over time. I'm not sure why Old Kaiōshin didn't bother mentioning this "negative energy" thing before, though...he did warn them in Z, but if I recall, he didn't really give a technical reason. I'm going to assume that he didn't think it would build up that much over time, or that he didn't know exactly how much the DBs had been used in the past, so he didn't bother mentioning it as he assumed it wasn't applicable. While I like the idea, I dislike the fact that it's becoming an Earth-bound rehash of the first saga, more or less. I'm hoping that it will shift gears soon into something a bit more unique, but I guess I'll find out soon... (I'm currently on Episode 52, so only 13 episodes left! :) )

Viewing Update: I'M DONE! It took almost exactly one full year, but I have obtained and watched every DB/Z/GT episode, movie, and OVA. I feel...accomplished, yet sad that I'm out of DB things to watch. However, I'm happy that hopefully I'll get to see Battle of Gods at some point in the not-to-distant future...

I will go on record with the Shadow Dragon saga is my favorite of the four GT sagas. I think it feels the most classically DBZ-like. DB/Z/GT really hinges on having a good single villain, I think. Omega Shenron was probably the most imposing villain of GT, as he should be. I also really like the part that Nuova Shenron played...it's always satisfying when a villain realizes the error of their ways and helps the Z Fighters. I also enjoyed the final episode...it was sappy and nostalgic, just how I like it! The fact that you do get some future closure is kind of nice, and the re-kindling of Goku & Vegeta Jr.'s rivalry was funny to see...plus elderly Pan, ha. I was satisfied with the ending, personally. I love how Goku just jumps on Shenron's back and leaves, it's never explained, and everyone just accepts it due to Goku's history of flakiness, ha. A fitting ending, I think.

Oh, and "A Hero's Legaacy": Who remastered this for the green bricks?! It did NOT get the same remastering that the series episodes got...it looks like it was copied over straight from a VHS tape with the wrong refresh rate or something...the image/color is hazy with weird motion blurring. But anyway, ignoring the less-than-amazing quality, I was glad that I got to see more than just a minute or two of Goku Jr. The adventure he went on was fairly boring, but I liked getting to see his personality as being kind of a wimp, then sort of coming into his own by the end. Seeing his evolution was nice, and I was kind of glad it wasn't just Goku Sr. fighting a random movie-only villain. I also thought it was funny that they used Goku's poor math skills to get around having to exactly define Goku Jr.'s precise generational relation to Goku, ha. (By the way: Is his exact relationship to Goku known by any other means, or just left ambiguous?)

Here's my list of how I'd rank all of the sagas for DB & GT after watching each of them one time, in terms of how much I enjoyed them, not necessarily their quality, etc.:

Dragon Ball:
1) King Piccolo
2) Commander Red
3) Fortuneteller Baba
4) Tien Shinhan
5) 21st Tenkaichi Budōkai
6) Emperor Pilaf
7) Piccolo Jr.
8 ) Red Ribbon Army
9) General Blue

Dragon Ball GT:
1) Shadow Dragon
2) Baby
3) Black Star Dragon Ball
4) Super 17

As for DBZ, there are too many individual sagas to rank, I think. Maybe I'll compile a full list one day, but for now, my favorite "major" DBZ villains in order were: Cell, Frieza, Majin Buu, Androids, Ginyu Force, Babidi, Garlic Jr. (I don't really consider Vegeta a "villain", so I didn't include him there, since my future feelings towards him skew my ability to consider him an actual villain.)

Anyways...that's it! A year's worth of DB awesomeness!:

Nice! :)

Any plans for the manga? You should give it a read if you got the chance! Not to mention, you can always rewatch some of your DB stuff in Japanese. It'll give you a whole new perspective on the series!

Yeah, I think I'd like to read the manga next. Thinking about either picking up the first VIZBIG volume of DB at some point, or maybe just buying them digitally. The cost ends up being barely more expensive to get them digitally (like $15 vs. $12 for 3 volumes), but I also won't need to find a place to store them all, plus I won't need to lug around a bunch more physical books if/when we move again, which I hate doing! But yeah, I think that's next on my list, just to see how different it is from the anime...

It's mostly the same. It moves way quicker since there's no filler or padding. You may notice on some of the covers and color chapters, the colors are different from the anime, which is always fun to try and spot!

I'd go with the Vizbigs due to colored chapters. :)

Okay, after some pondering, here's the list of my favorite DBZ (FUNimation-previously-defined) sagas:

1. Cell Games
2. Frieza
3. Majin Buu
4. Perfect Cell
5. Fusion
6. Vegeta
7. Imperfect Cell
8. Kid Buu
9. World Tournament
10. Trunks
11. Babidi
12. Captain Ginyu
13. Androids
14. Great Saiyaman
15. Garlic Jr.

(UPDATE: Since Funimation has since stopped using their crazy 15-saga listing upon revamp of their DBZ website (thankfully!), of the four main sagas, I'll say that Cell was my favorite...followed closely by Frieza, then Saiyan, then Buu.)

Next I'll be working on ranking my favorite DB/Z movies. I might have to re-watch a few to refresh my memory on some of them, but maybe I'll come up with that list next week sometime...

Viewing Update: So, I recently purchased the Season 1 set of DBZ Kai (the newer version with the Kikuchi score)! I mainly wanted to see how the editing held up in Kai (along with the Blu-ray visuals), as I've heard a mish-mash of good and bad things about it from various people. I figure the only way to form my own opinion is just to watch it myself, so I've embarked on a quest to watch Kai in Japanese. If you'll recall, I just finished watching all of DBZ last year (for the first time ever) with the US Broadcast audio, along with DB & GT in English as well, so I wanted to get a taste for the Japanese voice acting & music now. Re-watching all of DBZ proper is a long commitment which I'd rather not repeat right after I just finished doing it once already, so since I was interested in watching Kai and it will take me half the time, I figure that I might as well go ahead and watch it in Japanese anyway.

One question I had, for those long-time DBZ fans: Will the "Rock the Dragon" Ocean dub boxset be worth it for a fan who didn't ever watch the Ocean dub on TV back in the day? I'm on the fence about it, as I've heard so many good things about that dub from various fans, but I never saw it in the first place, so it doesn't hold much nostalgia for me personally. However, if others think that it's really must-see, I might pick it up when it comes out...

And finally, another recent purchase...imported from Hong Kong!:

It's great to see how much you've embraced the series since watching it! I'd say most people's love for the Ocean dub is through nostalgia, although I can't speak for everyone. :D
