Re: Characters who looks like real life people
It came from the stereotypical sambo face and child-like speaking pattern from an artist in Japan in the 1980s who did not have the American sensitivities of the 1980s, nevermind 2010s.

Re: Characters who looks like real life people
Yeah, but you read into that what you wanted. How does that look anything like a black man stereotype? For one, he wears a turban, he looks more middle eastern inspired, he has spock like ears, he's literally the color black, not brown, and he has big red lips.Dr. Machismo wrote:Mr. Popo looks like black man stereotype. Ever heard of "blackface"?ABED wrote:Popo is literally black, I don't know where this whole "popo is a black stereotype" came from. But it doesn't quite make sense because isn't Uub indian? Maybe if there was Popo reference...
I think people are WAY too sensitive about the issue, it's not like Popo is a negative character.

And yes, everyone is racist. Literally everyone.

But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I don't think that's him. Judging by the "You Hairst xD", it sounds like you're saying "Your Hair".TheGmGoken wrote:You Hairst xD My first guess was Adult Goten no lie. Then I thought Yamchasonikku956 wrote:

Re: Characters who looks like real life people
Even supposig Popo was based off that photo, does that make him a racist charicature? He has more than enough attributes that separate him from said photo. People get all bent out of shape over damn near everything, because you can twist pretty much everything. Some people took Mark Webb's decision to take Mary Jane out of the Spider-Man sequel as some anti-feminist thing. I've read messages on this board where they complain about Toriyama drawing black people with big lips. Heaven forbid! Even Eddie Murphy can admit that on average, black people have bigger lips.
Anyone else think Black from the Red Ribbon Army looks like Doakes from Dexter?

Re: Characters who looks like real life people
Your understanding of the situation (Japanese culture of the 1980s and their homogeneous culture in general, American culture of the 1980s, "sambo" and its journey into Japanese consciousness and then into its popular art / entertainment, etc.) is limited. You are trying to look at it from a very progressive and modern viewpoint. That, honestly, isn't necessarily a bad thing at all! The "problem" is that you don't understand the historical context or significance at all, and are vastly underestimating everything that goes into it.ABED wrote:Even supposig Popo was based off that photo, does that make him a racist charicature? Trust me when I tell you that Toriyama's depiction of Mr. Popo is based on a very ignorant - with mostly harmless intent, but incredibly ignorant none-the-less - stereotype, and one based on very harsh racism. Like I said before, if the art style itself were not enough (and it is), the speaking pattern that Popo uses solidifies it beyond all reasonable doubt.

Re: Characters who looks like real life people
I get all that, but the "harmless intent" is what matters to me, even if it was based off a racist charicature. There's enough about the character that keeps it from being a negative. That's why I'm not at all bothered by it.
I'm happy you took the time to explain it because what bothers me is when people who do bring it up make the claim that it's obvious, and in such a way that they imply you'd have to be dumb not to get it.
