I always chalked it up to there being a discrepancy in the timeline between the two universes. I do enjoy some of the more complicated explanations in this thread though, specifically that the androids were holding back most of their power so as not to kill Trunks too soon.

I thought it was because Trunks could't sense their ki and didn't know they was toying around with Trunks the whole Time. That or as time went on(20 years right?) their Cyborg parts became rusty.
