Does the whole Bulma/Vegeta/Yamcha thing make any sense?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

So, yes, as I've said, aside from those two instances, we never see them upset at each other. And it should be noted those two instances take place 11 years apart from one another! I think that's a record any other relationship would kill to have. And we still never actually SEE them fight.
That could be a bad sign actually. It could just mean that neither one was really all that invested in one other, or actually talked about anything all that important. I mean think about it, they date off and on for 11 years, and they NEVER get married or anything? Maybe it's just me and my old-fashioned ways, but 11 years seems like an awfully long time to wait for marriage.

As I've said before in other threads, count me among those that doesn't really buy the whole 'Yamcha is a cheater' thing. It all just comes off as way too 'convenient' of a way to shove him out of the picture so that another half-Saiyan can come into the picture, and really it's blatantly obvious that it really is exactly that. I like Vegeta and Bulma as a pairing, but I think that's only because it's pretty much always been a thing as long as I've been a fan, since I got into the series pretty much right at Trunks' debut. If I had started out with the original Dragon Ball and then came to the point where the pairing was forced, I'd have an even bigger problem with it than I do now I think.

The funniest part of this is that I'm not even really that big of a fan of Yamcha, and yet I'm constantly defending him in this debate.

I love Yamucha as a character, but I prefer Trunks so sorry not sorry. I'm kidding, I don't see what's so weird about Yamucha and Bulma growing apart after so many years of being together, people grow up and change and obviously Vegeta and Bulma have a lot of chemistry and hilarious interactions.

I just hoped that Yamucha would find someone and get married himself as well, he's a good guy and doesn't deserve to end up on his own

With all that said, when I was a kid I could not get over how Bulma could've fallen in love with a jerk like Vegeta. I've always loved Bulma and I used to loathe Vegeta, but then after I grew up, I don't think her hooking up with him was so weird. They are both narcissistic and stubborn to the point of ridiculousness, and I do like that she was the one who could finally change him into a better person. It's rather cliche, but I think it works for them. I don't think her liking Goku or thinking he was hot means she would pine for another saiyan, because she's starstruck by almost any good looking guy she meets. She's supposed to have fallen in love with Vegeta's perseverance in trying to be the best or whatever, but maybe they just had a case of the raging hormones and BAM! Trunks is made and Vegeta starts growing fonder of her gradually... I'll stop this fanfiction now.

Despite Toriyama not going into it much, it's pretty clearly spelt out in the manga - Vegeta and Bulma had a child because they had sex purely out of lust, and Vegeta's an uncaring dick to her the entire Android arc. It's not until he mellows out and starts living an ordinary life, raising Trunks that he begins to develop feelings for her.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

I guess we can just chalk it up to sacrificing character for plot.

If so, that's a far cry from the Yamcha that was screaming about how doomed they were when they were about to face Freeza and King Cold.
It really isn`t. If you notice, the ones in that chapter who happen to freak out were the ones who never went to Namek and experience first hand Freezas power. That should read Tienshinhan, Yamucha and Chaoutzu, all showing similar reactions in the Manga. They could see via Kai how strong he was, but sense it first hand is another matter. In Namek, Piccolo, Gohan, Kuririn and Vegeta all show disbelief and awe over Freezas battle level and the idea of fighting him. In the manga, all Yamucha mutters is how they are going to die, right after coming back. Even Vegeta admits as much.

In the end, just like in the Cell arc afterwards, not a single one of them runs away (Chaoutzu stays behind, perhaps because the cast got too big, perhaps because in-story he was behind everyone else of the main figther cast), but I don`t see a major shift in the courage department, other than plot importance.

I always did find it pretty odd how Bulma was perfectly willing to sleep with someone who happened to be a homicidal space pirate for most of his life, but then again, Dragon Ball is full of weird things.

Well, Bulma's moral compass isn't the best ever either. She's chaotic neutral at best
