Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
Re: Should the next DBZ movie be 2D or CG Animation?
The new Saint Seiya (And Doraemon) movie looks great. Personally, I'd love for them to make a film out of pre-Z portion of the story using that kind of CGI. As for anything else; just stick with 2D, please.

Are you saying BoG's animation was bad?Tatakae!!Ramenman wrote:There was a time where I would immediately say no to any 3d because I loved the old art style so much, and they did areally good job with Jump anime tour special in 2008, but if it's between the animation we saw in "Battle of Gods" and CGI, I think I would prefer CGI, which makes me really sad because I prefer 2D animation over CGI.
I didnt think it was all that bad.. The old animation from, say, the Majin Buu saga, was better in my opinion, but BoG's wasn't all too bad. Could've been much worse, at least.

It certainly wasn't as great as television series episodes of recent animated series have been. Poor planning and directing is to thank for that.Daimakku wrote:Are you saying BoG's animation was bad?

I honestly think the animation for Battle of Gods was bad. My favorite part of the series when I was originally reading the manga was the artwork. It was so detailed. Battle of Gods did not look very detailed to me and I didn't like the art style. I want a Dragon Ball movie to look beautiful when I see it. There were a lot of episodes of the tv series that had bad animation, but I really didn't see much of the anime when I was little, I read the manga, but when it comes to a Dragon Ball movie, they have always had much greater animation, so I expect more out of a movie than this.

If they can get it to look like Harlock, absolutely CG. Otherwise keep it simple at 2D.
It needs to be cartoony CG though, not super realistic.

No. It just wouldnt look right to me, though the animation style has obviously changed, maybe not for the better, because the models always look completely wrong. Or in BOGs case really cheap looking. Jaapanese CG usually looks horrible and Toei seems to absolutely zero grasp on how to interject CG animation into traditional cell animation and it is always butt ugly complete with instances of low-grade, budget-saving animation that results.
However if we wanted a badass and faithful Western adaption, I'd throw my money at:
Except the part where Goku was on the kai planet, most if not all of the movie looked no better than the game intros and those usually look really bad. I cant get over how DBZ looked its best in the UT opening, yet I'm stunned nobody at Toei sees this.

Agreed, the 2D animation in BOG was noticably bad for me as well. Nothing of it was really movie quality at all. This does not compare well to the recent Gundam Unicorn and Evangelion Shin Gekijouban films, in which every frame is like a work of art. Toei is not a small studio, and DBZ is a major property – surely it was possible to give the animation department a bit more funding for this project. When I expect to see a block-buster movie, I expect some high-end quality detail like Don Bluth or old Disney films, not 90 minutes of DB heroes promo-quality trash.Tatakae!!Ramenman wrote:I honestly think the animation for Battle of Gods was bad. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

The Opening for Ultimate Blast had many talented key animators involved, so it's no surprise it looked so good. Battle of Gods was rushed and animated mostly by bad animators. Other than Shida Naotoshi's cuts during the insert song, the movie definitely looked at it's best during the Super Saiyan God ritual thanks to Oonishi Ryou's key animation. A few of Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi's cuts also looked good, thanks to the thinness of the lines he employed for Pilaf.
