Why did the dub change Tenshinhan to
Tien Shinhan? I don't get it.

Giving everyone involved the benefit of the doubt, it probably went like:
"Tenshinhan is too long/hard a name"
"OK, let's shorten it."
"Well, 'Ten' isn't really something we should go with. Probably can't monetize a name like that."
"The food it's based on has a region that you can adapt into our alphabet as T'ian or T'ien or something, so let's go with that."
"OK."
"Oh, and maybe just lop that 'Shinhan' part on later as a tossaway thing. Like when we say 'Kame-sen'nin style of martial arts' with Goku."

That sounds reasonable enough, thanks

I always figured that Funi considered Shinhan to be his last name or something. It's pretty much only used at Tournaments.

From what i understand, the dub took an alternate reading of Tenshinhan, and split it in half so that it wasa given name and a surname.
Tenshinhan is the japanese name of a chinese dish
Tienshinhan is the chinese name of that dish.
I could be mistaken about that though.

Tenshinhan is a Japanese dish. The name translates to "Tianjin Rice", though it doesn't have more to do with the Chinese city Tianjin than General Tso's Chicken has to do with general Tso.

Not just some cases, it's usually both better written AND more accurate to the Japanese than Viz's English edition. Definitely one of the best releases out there.
Though I don't think this is really the topic for that.

T'ien is the wade Giles romanisation of the Chinese reading of the first kanji in Tenshinhan's name. (Whole thing in WG Chinese would be Tienchinfan)
