Besides Toriyama, who would you like to see write DB?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Also he has a history of not doing great at writing extremely powerful characters ("street-level" characters like Daredevil and teenage Spider-Man are more his speed).
Bendis's Daredevil was fantastic, yeah.

Siege was not.

I think that about sums up how his Dragon Ball would be.

What I would really like to see is a new Dragon Ball manga where different writers and artists would write stories in the Dragon Ball universe, with Toriyama supervising, kind of the way Marvel and DC comics are done. The stories wouldn't have to be related, and could involve any character and take place at any point in the time line.
The only way i see that working if the artists were following the dragon ball art style, and i doubt that it would ever happen. Oda's art style is pretty bad when he tried to draw Goku but ofcourse he could find somebody else to draw the art. i personally dont think they could recreate the same feel that toriyama was able to give dragon ball.

I believe they were asked to draw Dragon Ball in their own style with that image. Any pro artist can recreate someone else's style easily, it's not like Toriyama's style is even that hard to simulate.

That's Curt Swan's work, not George Perez. Perez was nothing but an inker in the '70s. In the '80s is when he got to write and draw, with his work transitioning the Bronze Age of superhero comics into the Modern Age of superhero comics. The sneeze stuff is Silver Age and the Superboy stuff is Bronze Age. The Crisis itself is George Perez on art and co-written by him and Marv Wolfman.

Everything up to Piccolo Daimao is very Silver Age in tone, while the rest is very Bronze Age. Perez would not be suited for Dragonball in the least.

IMO, I think it would be more interesting to have a mix of the original style and the artists own style, so long as they didn't make drastic changes to the characters basic designs for no reason, like making Goku bald. As for Oda, I think he is more than capable of emulating Toriyama's style, but chose to draw Goku with his own style in that picture.

Have you read One Piece? I get the same feeling from One Piece that I get from Dragon Ball.

Personaly no, I did try to get into One Piece by attempting to watch anime episode twice and then even reading manga which starts somewhat differently from the anime perspective and none of them won my attention. Is Oda a big fan of star wars and Sci-Fi genre? if no thats one of the biggests flaws why he might not be able to give us the same feeling of Dragon Ball that Toriyama was able too. Modern Dragon Ball is all about expanding into different worlds, planets, universes etc
Is Oda also a fan of manga's like Ashita no Joe, Ring ni Kakero and Hajime no Ippo? If hes not a fan of pure martial arts fighting manga's then he might also have hard time constantly drawing battle scenes in dragon ball and if he prefers his story to be more about adventure and comedy.

Perez did give me my single favorite illustration in comics.

Eichiro Oda will be amazing but only if his Goku didn't win everything. In One Piece is just Luffy that defeats the main villain without help from anyone, if I recall correctly.

I'm not sure if he's a fan of all those series, but I know he's a very big fan of Dragon Ball, and has said Toriyama is his biggest influence, which is very obvious from reading One Piece.

That's not true. One thing that I think Oda actually does better than Toriyama is that he manages to keep all of his characters relevant, even the weakest of them, and gives them all important roles in overcoming whatever obstacle they are facing.

Oda typically has groups of villains, so everyone gets someone to fight. Luffy usually gets the strongest of them, but everyone gets to contribute to foiling the villains plan. (In DB, defeating the baddie is usually enough to foil the plan)

I know that and I agree. But the one that defeats the MAIN villain is always Luffy.

Wait...what? Disregarding Star Wars, modern DB has nothing to do with expanding into different anything. Almost all the events in the past few movies and sagas have taken place on Earth. Even if the cast ever travels to other worlds, Toriyama never actually explores them beyond aesthetics. We know jack **** about namek or saiyan culture, and if we do, it's so one dimensional, they might as well have been a race on Earth. This is my gripe with people wanting them to explore other universes; you are not going to receive anything that couldn't be received by exploring a new planet or area on Earth.

Oda's characters never need to leave their planet because he does such a fabulous job at continuously expanding it and including depth to every little island the cast reach.

Isn't that exactly the case in DB? As far as I can tell, he beat all the DB villains, he killed all but one of the movie villains, he killed all the GT villains, he defeated Frieza, he coached his son to beat Cell, and he formed and threw the spirit bomb that killed Buu.

It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

Who defeated Raditz? Teamwork. Vegeta? Teamwork. Cell? Teamwork. Boo? Teamwork. I still didn't read all DB manga yet(Yea I know shame on me). One Piece is Luffy getting pissed over his friends being demolished or another thing, and ending up defeating the main villain ALONE with his strenght. I agree that One Piece is better in term of characters, story and world building but after seeing Luffy defeating all main villains alone it gets predictable and boring sometimes.

Luffy needs help a lot more often than Goku does, and His crew are still relevent.

Not to mention Luffy usually fights the strongest fighter, not the main villain (though they're often the same, not always)

I'm not saying his crew is irrelevant. Everyone is relevant to the story and while Luffy is fighting, they do another things relevant to the plot. But when comes to fighting the main villain is all about Luffy and no one else.

Not always. sometimes the main villain isn't the strongest fighter. Other times it's a team effort

The current One Piece arc (in the manga) is actually a great case of using teamwork for the big villain fight.
There's also probably something to be said for the Thriller Bark arc.

Well if you look the idea of what type of characters Toriyama has been developing in these recent movies, they are all pretty much aliens or deities. It would be hard if not almost impossible for dragon ball to go back to exploring earth since Goku already pretty much explored everything there is on earth. We need to see plot progressing now, introducing new civilizations, new planets or universes and the possibilities on what you can have in them are limitless since you have to think outside the box aswell as have total control on how you want them to look.
Perfect example is final fantasy, and how characters and worlds there look completely different. Different looking cities, different types of mecha and transportation, different types of governments and societies which gives the whole franchise this depth that makes it different from our real world. Oda is not somebody i would vouch for to be able to create something like that. Possibly someone whos more older and experienced like Hayao Miyazaki might be able to revive dragon ball into a more wider future of possibilities.

I agree with the bolded, but we honestly don't see that in DB. Sure, he introduces aliens and what-not, but we never really learn all that much about them besides their occupation, power, and disposition. They explored Namek, and it was a pretty empty, boring planet. The plot emphasized on the invaders and major characters, not the world or its inhabitants. We know nothing about Planet Vegeta, the saiyans, or the tuffles,. We know nothing about the Yardrats, or Goku's time there. And so on. >.>

In One Piece, despite the setting being restricted to one planet, every little island is so widely explored that you learn about the inhabitants, the style of living there, the immediate threats being experienced, and so on. That sense of adventure, combined with likable characters that each get significant screen time is why the manga/anime is so popular. I think Oda would do a fantastic job with a sci-fi anime that has the quirks of DB, especially given the fact that he's a fan of the series to begin with.
