Personaly no, I did try to get into One Piece by attempting to watch anime episode twice and then even reading manga which starts somewhat differently from the anime perspective and none of them won my attention. Is Oda a big fan of star wars and Sci-Fi genre? if no thats one of the biggests flaws why he might not be able to give us the same feeling of Dragon Ball that Toriyama was able too. Modern Dragon Ball is all about expanding into different worlds, planets, universes etc
Wait...what? Disregarding Star Wars, modern DB has nothing to do with expanding into different anything. Almost all the events in the past few movies and sagas have taken place on Earth. Even if the cast ever travels to other worlds, Toriyama never actually explores them beyond aesthetics. We know jack **** about namek or saiyan culture, and if we do, it's so one dimensional, they might as well have been a race on Earth. This is my gripe with people wanting them to explore other universes; you are not going to receive anything that couldn't be received by exploring a new planet or area on Earth.
Oda's characters never need to leave their planet because he does such a fabulous job at continuously expanding it and including depth to every little island the cast reach.

Isn't that exactly the case in DB? As far as I can tell, he beat all the DB villains, he killed all but one of the movie villains, he killed all the GT villains, he defeated Frieza, he coached his son to beat Cell, and he formed and threw the spirit bomb that killed Buu.
