Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
Ranchi is a direct transliteration of the katakana used to write Lunch's name.

So like Krillin, it's technically correct?Theophrastus wrote:Ranchi is a direct transliteration of the katakana used to write Lunch's name.

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
"Ranchi" is a DIRECT romanization of ランチ (ra - n - chi). "Kuririn" is a direct romanization of クリリン (ku - ri - ri - n).Vegitofaxx wrote:So like Krillin, it's technically correct?Theophrastus wrote:Ranchi is a direct transliteration of the katakana used to write Lunch's name.
A spelling of "Lunch" is a transliteration/adaptation of the original spelling from Japanese to our alphabet, but one that makes a whole lot of sense considering what the word represents. "Krillin" is also a transliteration/adaptation of the original spelling, but unlike other name spellings, doesn't do anything to preserve the pun and at best only remotely preserves the pronunciation with a bunch of "R/L" swaps and vowel-dropping.
Dragon Ball is a bizarre series with names that are generally puns on things, so it's a case-by-case basis of whether or not a direct romanization still works as a name spelling in our alphabet (as it does with names like Kuririn or Tenshinhan) versus names that arguably work better with some adaptation in their transliteration (like with Tullece or pretty much any member of the Ginyu Special Force).
"Krillin" is just as accurate as "Toranks" (from トランクス or to - ra - n - ku - su), so sleep on that one

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
"Krilin" or "Krillin" is somehow always favored in pretty much every official translation, it must sound good or something.
The old French dub chose it back then (although the spelling could vary) and therefore it is not surprising that countries basing their translation of the old French dub scripts would have it too.
But still, the retranslation of the manga, and even that retranslation's update for the Perfect Edition (Kanzenban) chose Krilin too (with a note still explaining about the original name and pun).
The new French dub, while readapting some names, still chose Krilin too.
Funimation, coming up with their own translation that was independant of whatever the old French dub scripts had done back then, still chose Krilin or Krillin.
So, for whatever reason, translators seem to often choose "Krilin" or "Krillin" as the best adaptation of the original Kuririn, perhaps because it is pronounced so fast in Japanese that it does sound like "Krilin" is being said, with sort of a "rolled R" like in the Spanish language due to the fast "Kuri". But this is just theoritical.

Like, no. That's dumb as hell. There is no way Vegeta encountered that. Even then, Kaio should have know that his technique is similar to something else.

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
A few lines from Tenshinhan a.k.a T-en during the Saiyan arc:
"Look! I can see their parachutes! They're okay." -after TV crew aircraft is blown up by Nappa.
"You just wait till it grows back!" -after getting his arm severed
Nappa after blowing up a city:
"That area might've been evacuated, but it'll give them something to think about!"

Well that can sort of be rationalized, it's basically a technique that increases your power, and there are lots of those (either transforming or just powering up).ShadowDude112 wrote:"That Kaio-Ken attack of yours is a good trick, but I've encountered something just like it before."

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
Maybe they were trying to kinda-sorta foreshadow Zarbon's monster transformation. Vegeta was aware of that, right?

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
I actually like that line. It reminds you that Vegeta has fought dozens of battles throughout the universe while Goku has been derping around on Earth.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Oh, I remember that! That was the only time it was pronounced like King Kai's name. Hmm, didn't know that was a dub line.ShadowDude112 wrote:"That Kaio-Ken attack of yours is a good trick, but I've encountered something just like it before."

Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
"TRIPLE KAY-OKEN ATTACK! KAMEYAMEYA!!" But other than that, I have no problem really.
And honestly, I'm quite surprised that people have a problem with the English attack names. I've gotten used to them for years and I'll never stop using them. So if any otaku wanna condemn me for saying "Spirit Bomb" over "Genki Dama", or "Special Beam Cannon" over "Mankako-whatever" or "Death Beam" over "Desu Beemu", it's your problem. And BTW, I use both Japanese and American names.

Maybe they felt they could get away with i because they already had one character who had their ability?
