Because movie 12 doesn't need any hyping up beyond "Cinemas! Fusion! Janemba! Hitler!", whereas the UU episodes were previously dubbed by someone else so they want to make sure people know the difference (and give people an "incentive" to rewatch/rebuy them)Chaos Saiyajin wrote:Okey Dokey...FUNi allows profanity in the UUE but not their movies? How odd...Not that I care or anything, because really all I watch is the JP Version when I buy the DVD, unless I just have the urge to laugh at Mr. Satan's dub voice...

"Crap-geezer" is a translation of "kuso jiji", jiji being an unflattering word for "old man".Chaos Saiyajin wrote:Is that used only in the ViZ manga or the JP Manga too? I've always wondered that...Tsukento wrote: Or we could go with the One Piece variation of the term, "crap geezer."

Wasn’t the whole instrument of your defeat line just a fan sub anyway??? Isn’t the direct translation, I am the one who will defeat you? Didn’t Ex have a fan sub comparison article up awhile back about this.

Well Daizees. Here's a question!
Does Vegeta maintain that sort of... meek(?) aura he has in the japanese version, or when he cries and stuff, do we get tacky lines like 'stop peeling those onions'? See, as a female perhaps the greatest lure to Movie12 was the array of emotions and bonding both he and Goku shared. (Do we still get the prince line, too?)
It seems they repaired the damage of 'Janempa' that was going abouts on the Official site... and IMPLIED the damage of 'Veku'. Afterall, Fat Gogeta does introduce himself at that moment, and I'm positive the repurcussions of this is that everyone will be calling thin Gogeta 'Veku' too! *dies*
As for the question of 'asshole', as interesting it is to delve into the realms of the japanese language and translation... we don't need to. Paikuhan yells 'asshole da!' in ENGLISH in the japanese version! *grin*

I saw the Chicago theature showing lsat night, and while some things were a bit reworked it all flows really well.
I thought the Hilter voice was GREAT by the way. The whole audience was laughing every scene with him.
As a whole it was great, my only complaints being the weird not using romeo and juliet names and Gogeta's final line being changed.
Also the whole but your already dead Vegeta joke IS still there

I managed to interview *cough* interogate *cough* Someone'd seen the movie, a big vegeta-is-manly nut (I won't get into that *twitch*) thankfully, I managed to recieve word that he remained mushy (thank goodness! Emotions are needed for.. characters)
Aparently the crying scene had pathetic voice acting to it- (which is a shame, it was one of the major letdowns in the french version)
Fat-Gogeta still got called Veku, (even though he is meant to introduce himself as Gogeta. We now have a FUNi inserted PLOTHOLE (Bakas!) Because Fit Gogeta never did say who he was. Aparently Gogeta's voice came out similar to Yajirobe.
I don't understand why the 'ballerina' inserted line has been taken as the most hillarious in the movie. I remember 2 other lines that literaly had me floored and laughing in the japanese version which seem to have been mostly ignored.
I do have another question, and as the person I talked to was both scatterbrained and... mean, I need someone else to sate my curiosity. In the middle of the movie when Goku and Vegeta are inside needle mountain, Goku tells Vegeta in the japanese version to go and hide. What was this changed to?

Honestly I don't get this whole thing about cursing in DBZ. I could be wrong, but as far as I know insults in japanese only get as bad as "fatty" or crappy something or other. This isn't to say they can't be bitingly offensive but it depends more on context and damaging someone's pride rather than calling them a nasty name. It surprises me how in some of the subtitles when Gokuh says "konoyarou" it is translated to "bastard" when it was more of a "why you-"(okay, an instense "why you"). I suppose it makes sense based on what an english speaker would say in the situation but I can't help but feel it gives people the wrong idea. This happens in plenty of other anime subs as well, such as in Serial Experiments Lain when Lain simply says "what was that?" it is translated to "what the hell?" Seriously now.

I'm sure there must be fowl language. I learnt my swearwords by- every time my japanese genius friend slapped a hand over my mouth, I KNEW I'd said something bad.
As for swearing in movie 12, Pikuhan swore -loads-, definately, definately swearing. I can't say for the english dub, but I think I heard they cut the curses.
Veku (as far as I'm aware) was some old fan denial that Gogeta could be fat, that somehow became canon *sweatdrop* every moment Gogeta is talked about in Movie 12 (in japanese) he's either 'Gogeta', or his components. *scratches head* the thing is, this is going to be -disasterous-. Everyone's gonna' think that Fit Gogeta is now 'Veku' because otherwise he's a nameless fusion. Way to confuse people, FUNi *gives a sarcastic thumbs up*

Even if that's the case, (Although I've watched that movie 50+ times, I do admit my japanese is not perfect and the subtitle could perhaps be wrong and not heard 'veku') *raises her index finger* He is Gogeta. Thusly Funi has made a booboo.

I believe that was a joke based on how the names can be combined in different ways and nobody really cares to remember what the name actually is in the heat of the battle. Definitely not an official name.
Yeah, I was too lazy to rewatch it but I think that pretty much sums it up. They really don't curse much in DBZ, like...at all.I actually just rewatched the movie, and since I was watching it raw, I had to actually pay attention to the spoken dialogue. The harshest thing he says (and that's the whole joke of the entire scene in question, since he's been so tame up until this point) is:
"Enma no kusojijii!"

The Kaio call him Veku. He still calls himself Gogeta. This is in the Japanese dialogue. See the "Transformation Guide".
Paikuhan's "cursing" is not so much cursing as it is very tame insults. The harshest thing he says all movie long (as discussed, as quoted, and it's the whole point of that individual line) is "Enma no kusojijii!"

So, what does 'asshole' mean in japanese? *blink* Is that a japanese word that just sounds english, or is that the english word taken to japanese and downgraded in offesnsiveness- or is this one of those incidencess of area of raising differenciates the views of each person?
For instance, the words cretin, b*stard and sh*t are very offensive where I come from, but other places in the english speaking world they're not.
I'm looking up the debateable swearwords in my dictionaries... I'm getting stuff that's very offensive where I'm from, so I'm leaning towards the perception theory.
Nnnn I'm still hearing a lot of 'Gogeta' for someone supposedly called 'Veku', I'm not convinced.
I've heard one thing that could be 'Beku' by the taller Kaio, but he still calls himself Gogeta. I, kinda' trust the guy to know his own name...
As for any new news- on the other sites I frequent, people've been to see it, but haven't been overly enthusiatic about it. *blink* There's been an odd sort of silence over it- but perhaps that's just the people I know.

Southern Kaiô calls him "Veku", more as a somewhat-insulting nickname to poke fun at the fact that they couldn't form the fusion correctly.
Yes, you're hearing "Beku" (if you want me to rip the audio, I'd be more than happy to). That's because there's no "V" sound in Japanese. It's a "B" sound. "bejiita". For example:
ベジータ (bejîta) + 悟空 (goku) = ベク (beku)
Since no-one should honestly run around spelling the name as "bejiita", though (we use "Vegeta" because it's what the whole pun is)... we spell it as "Veku".
And no, the Oni running down the stairs doesn't call Tank Boy an "asshole"; by now, it's pretty obvious which fansub you were watching. I had the same one. The word he uses is "ahô", which pretty literally just means "fool".
