Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Technically Linda Young was brought in to re-dub some of her dialogue, too. I'm not sure why, though, as her Freeza voice hadn't really changed.
She did? Freeza sounds the same and still has the same lines. He still says "Ride 'em cowboy, yee-haw!" when shaking Krillin around in his horn.

Also a lot of lines like when he pulls off Nail's arm and says, "Here's your arm, you can use it as a back scratcher!" are the same.
Yeah, well, unfortunately, the keyword in my last post was "some." Most of it remains the same. A few lines here and there were re-dubbed to be less silly, with one example being:

ORIGINAL DUB DIALOGUE: "Any last wishes before you go the way of the dodo?"
RE-DUBBED DIALOGUE: "Any last wishes before I kill you?"

However, for the most part, she just re-dubbed her dialogue with the original dub script, and with the same Freeza voice she has used since the beginning, intact. Here's a video sample. Like I said, I'm not sure what the point of having her re-dub dialogue without changing the script was, but it did indeed happen.

Linda Young's Freeza voice in the remastered dub actually did sound a bit different from her original Freeza voice. Back in 1999, her voice sounded more subdued, even in parts where the character was supposed to be yelling in anger. Her later voice sounded a bit more emotive.

In my opinion, that doesn't really have to do with her voice, though. That has more to do with her acting. She definitely delivered the lines differently, but her voice in and of itself doesn't appear to have changed.

Watching this old dub makes me realize Chris Sabat went through like 3-4 different voices with his Piccolo. First it was his Season 3 Ocean dub imitation, then the Piccolo voice he went with for the Cell/Buu saga and the rest of the original dub.

Then around the redub he started refining it a bit more, and now in Kai/currently its even more different. Its actually quite funny how many times he tried to change the way he made Piccolo sound in the dub.

It was good and much better than their original dub, but I'm not sure that's a good thing. If I want a quality English dub, I have Kai which is a lot better than their uncut redub even. The only reason I'd ever want to watch english Z is for nostalgia, despite the subpar acting. And I'm not sure if anyone else notices this but I think they removed some of the sound effects and for some reason there's no echo effect when a character is yelling/screaming. So yeah despite the improved acting I'm not a fond of the Z redub because it's not quite the same show that aired on cartoon network growing up, and they did a much better job with Kai when it comes to improved voice acting so that begs the question, who is the redub made for at this point?

Not counting the first two "Seasons," which were re-dubbed for the specific purposes of creating a consistent, uncut release of the show with a (relatively) consistent English dub cast, I have a theory about the re-dubbing that was done for "Season 3" and onward.

My theory is that when they re-dubbed DBZ, they were trying to strike a balance between a doing faithful re-dub and preserving the dub that nostalgia-driven fans originally fell in love with. They were likely being cautious about going too far in either direction, though, and decided to err on the side of caution by keeping their dub intact for the most part. As much as the typical Kanzenshuuer--myself included--doesn't like that original dub, nobody can deny that that dub was quite kind to FUNimation, financially.

They also didn't know that Kai was coming out yet, which was basically their perfect opportunity to have their cake and eat it too...or, to be more specific, keep the dub that nostalgia-driven fans love in DBZ, and do a very faithful dub for fans who wanted that in Kai. I'm willing to be that had Kai happened earlier in time, FUNimation never would have bothered to do any re-dubbing for "Season 3" and onward.

You really think FUNI was never going to redub the beginning of the show which not only had the Ocean voices, but tons of cut and spliced together episodes? I mean most of those episodes were never released fully in the U.S. till the redub. You think it would have been better for us to still be stuck with the Ocean dub for Seasons 1-2 in english to this very day?

I also think they should have redubbed all of Season 3 as well since it was part of the Freeza saga and the first saga that FUNI dubbed themselves, but at least a few characters had redone performances.

Also Kai cuts out a lot of filler that I enjoyed watching. How am I going to watch all those fillers I liked without going back to DBZ? I loved the Saiyan saga filler in particular.

I think he's referring to the re-dubbing of "Season 3" and onward, not the first two "seasons." You're right, the first two arcs objectively needed re-dubbing for the sake of having a consistent, uncut release with a consistent English cast. Whether anything after that needs re-dubbing is subjective, because bad scripts and bad acting or not, the show is uncut and visually identical to the original Japanese version from there on out.

Yeah I see. The funny thing is this is my first time watching the "updated" Season 3, and I don't think I could ever go back to the original 1999 version. Vegeta and Krillin's new performances put the older ones to shame. It really makes you realize how bad the voice acting really was back then.

My only gripes is Chris Sabat didn't re-do his Piccolo and Chris Ayres wasn't discovered yet to redub all of Freeza...but oh well. Goku and Gohan still sound fine to me, even if they're the original performances. Sean Schemmel wasn't as good as "acting" back then as he is now, but his actual Goku voice is pretty much the same.

I meant Season 3 and onward, I'll admit I should've made that clear

I would have liked to see them redub a bit more. Nostalgia can only go so far, I want good performances and voice acting.

Of course there are script inaccuracies and dub jokes inserted, but oh well, it was a product of its time. Back in the late 90's and early 2000's dubs weren't taken as seriously as they are today. They were always marketed to kids too.
