That's not the problem. Roman was claiming that Doctor Gero had actually appeared in the RRA Arc. Not even the dub went so far as to insert a character who didn't yet exist into the earlier material.

The actual broadcast of Dragon Ball, in both the Funimation Dub and the original, never mentioned Doctor Gero until he was introduced when Trunks arrived. Roman was saying that he had seen Gero in the original Dragon Ball. He hasn't.

But if you're watching Toonami, hear Roshi refer to Commander Red as Dr. Gero, watch Dragon Ball two or three years later and never hear Commander Red given a proper name, and have no experience with the series in Japanese, you can be forgiven for lumping the two together, as the Funi dubbed inadvertently leads you to do.

I'm not sure how, seeing as Gero looks absolutely nothing like Red. One is a tanned, old guy with long white hair, while the other is a short, pale red-headed guy with an eye-patch. They're not exactly similar.
