What was the first piece of content you saw of GT?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

IIRC, it was probably from SSJ4 Goku fighting Super Yi Xing Long, up until the end of Gogeta. I was obviously hyped, given this was subjectively the most badass part of GT.
Seems like the same VHS Tape is very popular among fans. Almost everyone saw the last 4 episodes first than the whole series or at least some footage of it, For example, the Gogeta SSJ 4 fusion comes to mind.

A picture of Vegetto doing that move where he shoots a beam out of each finger on the GT page of the Pojo DB book that had Freeza's first form on the cover.

I think the first bit I ever saw was the shot of Goku's Oozaru face morphing back into his humanoid face the first time he turns Super Saiyan 4. And I believe I first saw that shot in an AMV from waaay back.

Vegetto isn't in GT though. I think I know the shot you're talking about, and it's in Z.

I know, but yeah, that is the picture. That's why I remember it, because the text on the page is about GT, but it has that picture of Vegetto for some reason.

Well, I missed last episode of Z on TV, so I tuned next day for Dragon Ball as usual and it had different opening, different name, so I was just: ''Huh, sequel?!''
I was used to this from Slayers so I thought, yeah, Dragon Ball is the biggest franchise, of course, it had DB, DBZ, so now it goes as 3rd series.
So the first piece of content I saw was the whole first episode.

I remember seeing the 1st promo for Blue Water GT on CNX when the Kid Buu saga was only halfway through. It showed random stuff like Goku walking towards Pilaf on the lookout, SS4 Goku and Vegeta standing together, and Goku and Trunks vs Lord Luud. I immediately noticed how drastically different it looked to Z, and wondered if it was actually a true sequel or a spinoff in a similar vein to the various Tenchi series. I remember having something of a "wtf" reaction when it actually aired, due not only to the show itself but also because of the switch to the Blue Water voice cast. Add to that the fact that it was my first time being exposed to the original Japanese score and Blue Water's version of Dan Dan and I felt like I was pretty much watching a completely different show altogether. I also remember them restarting Z from the beginning that same day and feeling relieved I could still watch reruns of that.

Needless to say I've come to thoroughly enjoy GT over the years. Well parts of it at least.

Does Final Bout count? Because I think I played Final Bout before watching any Dragon Ball besides the second Broly movie. At some point then I decided to watch GT straight through and that was my first exposure to it. This was only a couple years ago; I guess I'm a somewhat new Dragon Ball fan.

So GT was also a big part of getting me into Dragon Ball. Technically, Broly 2 is the first thing I fully watched from the franchise, but it made so little sense without seeing anything else (it still doesn't make much sense) that I didn't really care for it. The fighting and Super Saiyanness were juuust enough to interest me and then next thing you know I watched GT (because it is the shortest series and I didn't care about spoilers) and now I love Dragon Ball.

I can't remember if it was either the next ep preview off of DBZ episode 291 or if it was in some other ad in another fansub tape for something else. Would've had to have been one or the other. I'm thinking maybe the latter.

Funny enough one of the biggest malls in my area way back when GT was first starting up its Japanese run (so circa spring of '96 maybe?) had two gigantic wall displays of Pan and de-aged Goku hanging up high in the front entrance of this huge (and when I say huge, I mean gargantuan) FYE mega-store. Weirdly they were featured prominently in the front up above the comic book section rather than where all the anime VHS tapes were further back (though the comic section had plenty of manga).

Its funny cause it struck me at the time that these were wall displays for an anime that had up till then absolutely NO officially licensed release yet: certainly none for GT, but not even for Z yet as this was still a little less than a year before the original Saban/Ocean dub would debut (original DB might've had its dub started by then, but very few people anywhere in fandom was paying it much mind at that point). This wasn't by any means the first time that that happened: comic book and video stores with a heavy degree of anime/manga had indeed put up posters and displays since well before then for anime/manga that had not gotten any kind of U.S. license yet: Battle Angel/Gunnm for example had a fairly massive presence in store displays since well before either Viz or ADV got ahold of the manga or OVAs.

But whenever it happened, it was almost always a sign that this was for an anime/manga that was making an incredible and un-ignorable splash within fandom of the time and that a license of SOME kind was inevitably to follow at some point sooner or later: all the more so since in this particular case it was in an FYE, a major national chain retailer, rather than a locally owned store. In THAT particular regard, this was certainly unique. I still remember being taken aback by it and thinking to myself "Holy shit: Dragon Ball's still an incredibly vital thing." Little realizing of course how utterly insane things would get just within another few years after.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

'A Grand Problem', in terms of actually seeing the show.
