Dragonball Evolution - 7 years later
Re: Dragonball Evolution - 7 years later
Eh, preference, I guess. I'd handily put even a cynical studio check-box film like Godzilla '98 above this. I could see the argument for Transformers 2, but at least someone on the special effects team cared, and it was basically the (offensively stupid) product it was marketed as.

Re: Dragonball Evolution - 7 years later
It's an entertaining movie even if it's not a faithful movie. It always bothers me though that the fight scenes weren't longer like with Piccolo and Goku.. When fight scenes are short that's the worst.. Maybe some good action in this could have saved it. I mean how hard is it to film people punching each other?! That was always my biggest gripe with the movie.. Poor writing and all that other stuff people mentioned bothers me too.
Can you imagine if this actually had a sequel? How would that go? Who would they cast as Vegeta? Makes you wonder..

I would guess they would pick somebody like Tyler Perry or Will Smith and he would become the unofficial leader of the Z-fighters with his own spin off movies.Jackal puFF wrote: Can you imagine if this actually had a sequel? How would that go? Who would they cast as Vegeta? Makes you wonder..

About Godzilla, Godzilla 2014 was such a disappointment to many (myself included) that it even made Godzilla 1998 not look that bad anymore. That's quite an effect. Furthermore, with the spectacular Daredevil series out by Netflix/Marvel some have went back to watch Ben Affleck's Daredevil and they liked it, well, the Director's Cut specifically. I might give it a watch too.Cipher wrote:Eh, preference, I guess. I'd handily put even a cynical studio check-box film like Godzilla '98 above this. As a pretty huge Godzilla fan (like, you can find me on Toho Kingdom from time to time), that's pretty bold. But the 2014 film did leave me really, really cold, and the 1998 version is a pretty inoffensive filtering of the property through the cynical late '90s Hollywood spectacle machine (which, who could have guessed, is a lot less cynical and offensive than the Hollywood spectacle machines of decades to come).Iberian_Saiyan wrote:About Godzilla, Godzilla 2014 was such a disappointment to many (myself included) that it even made Godzilla 1998 not look that bad anymore. Something about Dragon Ball. You know what sometimes has Godzilla monsters in it? Dragon Ball.

Re: Dragonball Evolution - 7 years later
Mortal Kombat Annihilation and the Street Fighter movie looked like they deserved to win Oscars next to this piece of excrement. Not one thing about this movie was good. From the terrible acting, to the horrendous costume design, to the overall terrible story, this movie truly is bad. Batman and Robin was better than this thing. There are movies that are so bad that it's actually fun to watch and rag on them (like Batman & Robin, Street Fighter, etc.), but this movie was so disgusting, that I could never force myself to sit down and watch this thing again.
But thankfully, it is forgettable and I only think about it whenever someone else brings it up. I bought a lot of DB-related stuff, a lot of pure crap and garbage that I never needed, but the thought of owning this movie never came close to being within the ballpark of being anywhere near coming to my head.

Honestly, I find it to be funny. I think it's hilariously bad and every time I think about it I smile and laugh to myself. What an absolutely ridiculous movie and a baffling way to adapt the story of Dragon Ball. I find it hard to stay mad at it when it hasn't done any real harm and it has kicked Toriyama into gear. I think this movie is a strange little gift to the series and I find it adorably bad.
Re: Dragonball Evolution - 7 years later
This is what gets it for me. I went in expecting to at least enjoy how shitty it was, but I couldn't even do that. I was just bored the whole time.Cipher wrote:So, yeah, probably one of the worst "big studio" releases I've seen, but not in a way that's interesting enough to recommend it for an irony or curiosity watch.

I do like in DBE that the monsters where done with suits and not CG. Not to mention they did a lot of filming on sets and not everything was green screen. I give credit to DBE for using practical effects and not making into a big CG fest like Transformers.

Do you really expect to see a lot of practical giant robots?Hellspawn28 wrote:I give credit to DBE for using practical effects and not making into a big CG fest like Transformers.

I don't get this CGI vs practical stuff. Both look fake during action. Practical sets vs green screen it's a different matter though.
But, to the point. Dragon Ball Evolution is an insult. It's an insult to the source material and the japanese version and an insult to English fans who the producers were stupid enough they were thinking about pandering to. Unlike garbage like the Transformers movies (which for the record, I can never finish any of the movies) that are stupid crazy action filled movies, at least Michael Bay works his ass off for everything his fans want to be in the movie, actually be in the movie (hot chicks, explosions and sex jokes) and also works his ass of to make it look very good in the process. In this movie you can't see any effort put in. Just a horrible cash-grab with a popular title.

Never watched DBE, but is it true that Chi-Chi's last name is McRoberts?

That's one rumor I've never heard before.
DRAGON BALL IS THE KING OF (Fighting) ANIME!!!!!!! In my opinion, at least...
My reaction to anything about Dragon Ball post-2013 that I don't like and/or is stupid.

Re: Dragonball Evolution - 7 years later
The only real good thing about DBE is that it used the Japanese names more (Muten Roshi, Okzaru, etc.), and it did have some funny moments (Muten Roshi: 10 times 0 is still 0, Muten grabbing Bulma's ass), but it failed in every other aspect.

Re: Dragonball Evolution - 7 years later
I still have never actually sat down and watched the whole thing but I think I've seen enough to say "it looks bad".
Though it was my first real interaction with the online DB fanbase. Back in 09 I used to be in an online boycott group on YT for DBE, in retrospect it was probably silly getting worked up over a movie that was going to tank anyway but they were still fun times. I haven't chatted with those guys in years, I should probably see what they're up to some time.
