Because in the movies that Toriyama personally wrote and had involvement with, if you want to talk about 'canon', Goku fought Beerus in his base form and got several powerful hits in, while Super Saiyan 3 Goku couldn't even touch him and got two-shotted. So even in Toriyama's 'canon', Goku and Vegeta's base would be stronger than Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks. I also find it weird how people use the 'canon' argument around here to shield them from things they don't like. Especially when no one seen the freaking outline.
