OP, your point loses a lot of weight when you mentions that Goku spared Vegeta to take the moral high ground, which is something that never happen. He spare him so he can fight again. That's it. There's no other deeper reason for it.
I really wouldn't agree at all that Goku has acted stupid in Super. There's only one time where he arguably crosses the line for naivety to outright foolishness and that was when he couldn't tell that was Beerus wearing a Monaka suit in EP42. But in that circumstance, it was 100% played for laughs and pure filler.
