Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 6 - Official Discussion Thread
Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 6 - Official Discussion Thread
+Minotaur was fun and felt very Toriyama.
+Conveniently inconvenient poops! (Better out you than in you.) Panzy chucking the toilet paper roll at Goku's face got a laugh.
[And if I can get momentarily serious, Goku's eating all kinds of food he's not used to, who knows how much fiber is in some of this stuff, etc.]
-Not washing your hands after a poop though is bad news, imo.
-Skipping a shower once in a while I can understand. (Have we ever seen Goku shower? When they show it he's always taking a bath.)
+/-I haven't seen much water period since they started this journey.
+I kind of wanted to see them try to disguise Goku. Oh well.
-The lore dumps this week felt a bit stiff to me in the "As you know..." way.
-Glorio vs Goku was good, but I let my expectations get too high ahead of watching. I expected more.
-The wheels keep spinning. This show's pace feels more for like a 52 episode series than a 24 episode one.
+/- Glorio being a double agent is not surprising.
+Refreshing to finally see what Bulma and friends are up to! The inside of that ship makes me think of carnival rides.

About that, I wonder if the ship being repaired by Bulma is still going to have some significance later, or if they're just going to be "oh, we know that you worked hard on this for several days, but here's another functional ship". Bulma would have every reason to be pissed off in the latter case, which I unfortunately think is going to be the most likely scenario. Unless they somehow decide to go with both ships for whatever reasons, maybe to have a backup of sorts, given how easily those things get broken or stolen?

"Donguri", which means "Acorn", with the syllables swapped around.
In any case, I for one really enjoyed this episode. The fight was gorgeously animated and the writing made me laugh several times. Yeah, plot progression is still really slow, and I think at this point we can just assume that's gonna be a constant throughout the show, but I still had fun.

I love all the lore exposition and how it complements Super.
Because we know that Zamasu hated mortals almost as much as he hated demons, but he was a demon himself, as a Glind descendant! Oh, the irony...
I hope the lore expositions keep coming. This changes everything, but in a good way. It enriches what happens later in Super.
I want more lore!!

Akira Toriyama, DBS vol.4 joint interview with ToyotaroAt his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.
Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 6 - Official Discussion Thread
I always thoroughly enjoy new Dragon Ball, same with Super and its movies. Sometimes I might think "wow that's really dumb" or "that could have been executed better" but I still have a good time with it.
I think I'm just a 32-year-old child with exactly the mindset this kind of thing is aimed at - yeah I absolutely love an RPG-like adventure through a Demon Wonderland and I'm always willing the episode not to end yet.
I guess what Kaioshin was saying is that the Glind don't have sexes, and the word gender is just being used interchangeably with that. They can have internal genders and present themselves however they wished. That's kind of how I already assumed Kaio, Kaioshin and also Angels worked anyway - they can look and feel one way or another don't really have the equipment.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 6 - Official Discussion Thread
This one is a bit divisive it seems, I liked it. Yeah, there wasn't much plot progression, but at least it was fun and the lore bits were at least very interesting this time around.
The Minotaur was a fun red-herring bad guy to set up the real fight. Ditto on him being Mr. Satan-like.
I like that the real fight was a pissing contest between Goku and Glorio over who gets to fight the Minotaur. It's a fun bait-and-switch gag that's also an organic culmination of the character dynamics at play so far. Glorio is getting more and more annoyed at Goku getting his name wrong, coupled with the reveal that he's working for Arinsu- Meaning he may or may not be in league with Gohma. We already know he's a liar at minimum, and the show continues to give us reasons to not trust him.
I liked the fight itself. The animation and choreography were great, and it felt like stuff was happening narratively during the fight as well. Goku and Glorio are sizing each other up, but it soon becomes clear that Goku has the upper hand; and Kaioshin wants to see how strong Glorio is, which makes sense considering Kaioshin's on to Glorio being untrustworthy. I also like how he basically told Goku to rough up Glorio up in the process, it's a bit edgy for such a formal guy. In the end, Glorio seems to understand the pecking order here. This might make him think twice about acting up if he indeed has malicious intentions. The fight wasn't caused by Shin's suspicions of Glorio like I thought it would be, but I think that was at least implicitly at play in the fight itself. I also liked the battle remix of the main theme playing throughout the fight. The music is continuing to score for me.
I'm starting to think the next episode previews are voiceless and brief to avoid spoilers. I can picture a more typical preview spoiling the bait-and-switch nature of the episode.
Super Saiyan made its second appearance. Like I suspected, Goku was in it for longer this time around. I'm a bit surprised that it came back so soon, but I don't mind that.
Interesting lore dump on Kaioshin's people, the Glinds. The guidebook lore about them growing from trees once in a while is canon after all, and like the Namekians, they're another race that originate from the Demon Realm and left. Also, confirmation that Kibito is also a Glind (it was always unclear to me if he was of the same race as Kaioshin or not since Shin is a god and he isn't). That's all cool. Interesting that Arinsu is a sibling to Kaioshin along with Degasu. This makes the three of them more explicit counterparts to each other: Kaioshin is a god while his siblings are in league with the Great Demon King. As for him being a god despite being demonic in origin. Divinity in Dragon Ball has long been established as something various types of beings can come into, so Kaioshin being a god despite his demonic ancestry is in-line with how godhood has always worked in this series (and furthers the similarities between the Glinds and the Namekians with the Nameless Namekian that became Kami- literally God, and Piccolo the Great Demon King). That these godly beings are actually demonic in origin also low-key feels like Toriyama-style irreverent humor. Lastly, Glinds are canonically genderless and seem to personally identify how they want, that's cool too (they're kinda like the Gems in Steven Universe).
We finally cut back to Earth, nice to see the rest of the cast. It looks like Bulma might not be joining them? Don't know how I feel about that right now. Looks like ship-issues might be a running gag after all.

Another good episode. Good interactions with glorio erhm glorious animation. It's fun, it dumps nice lore. The plot progression might not be holy smoking fast but at the end of each episode I'm like... HUH, IS IT ALREADY OVER?! And that's been with every episode so far for me except episode 5.
Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 6 - Official Discussion Thread
An episode with some really great action scenes
• Thank God, the plane issue didn’t mean more walk trips or anything, just a quick luggage problem sorted out
• So, they finally addressed the tree thing. I don’t remember much Toriyama’s interview about it, but according to Daima, it’s not like all Glinds become Kaioshins, right? Must be the same thing Zamasu went through (without the betrayal part of course)
• Glinds don’t have gender, but then they choose which one they identify with? Like, Degesu (male) and Arinsu (female)? Not that I really care, just found it interesting
• I think they could’ve kept who Glorio was talking to on the phone a secret, but alright, they already revealed it was Arinsu, so we know their intentions aren’t exactly “justice”-based
• The joke about Goku confusing a Minotaur with a cow was hilarious, but kinda silly that he decided to stop (trying to attack them) to watch a fight between them.
• Now that’s a debut worthy of a Super Saiyan transformation! The fight was awesome too, I’m wondering if Goku’s gonna reach SSJ2 and 3 as the series goes on...
• Finally, Vegeta’s crew is about to head to the Demon Realm—well, if it weren’t for another malfunction scene with the transport they’re using...
• NEP doesn’t show much, except that it’s focused on the necklace Panzy wears. Hope it’s more than it seems

You don't care...but you find it interesting? That means that you do care, which is fine! I'm just a little perplexed by this phrasing.Noah wrote: Sat Nov 16, 2024 10:29 am • Glinds don’t have gender, but then they choose which one they identify with? People online are predisposed to mention that they don't care about things...
But in this case it seemed like a pointless thing to mention, Dragon Ball really likes these types of species.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 6 - Official Discussion Thread
First meaningful fight in this show though it is undercut by Goku's having already clocked Glorio's strength in previous episodes. Still it looked pretty nice and now the characters know a bit more about each other.
The show continues with the formula of lore dump and then obligatory fight where Goku is completely unchallenged. Still there is a bit more going on in this episode so I don't mind it as much this time. I also liked the minotaur gag. Wonder if he will be replaced in the OP?

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 6 - Official Discussion Thread
So I kinda liked the episode; there were some highs and lows, as usual, but I definitely enjoyed it.
The world feels alive and the final fight was pretty awesome, considering that it's not DBZ levels of fight power.
I'm not digging the whole "every main character is a kid" vibe. I mean, sure, we get kid Goku again, and kid Shin is just...Shin, but Panzy is starting to turn into another Pan (like, sure, she has different strengths and some other differences, but her role in the party is shaping up to be similar to Pan's in GT, like, I wished Tori had given us a different kind of female character...tbh, I feel like they borrowed the quirks of personality of Pan, and stripped her of her power...but I'll say Panzy seems a bit more mature, so far, maybe due to her station as a princess).
Glorio, I don't quite like, not in a "hum, this guy is up to something" way but just simply that I'm not interested in him, so far. I like the idea of adding the typical serious, cool guy of shonens to Dragon Ball (wouldn't have minded if that was actually Panzy's role, btw), but he is just not tough-looking enough for me to consider him a "moody, dangerous guy", and his design is just not that interesting, he is just a glorified kid (pun completely intended).
This is not something new that I just realized, btw, I just felt like expressing it now, since the character gained relevance.
I loved the Minotaur's design, I think it looked amazing...but the character was unfortunately wasted. I mean, sure, the gag was nice, classic Akira, surprising twist and everything, but I think the character design deserved something more (not to mention he is like the more menacing sight of the whole Opening). This just smells like Oolong all over again, which reinforces my idea that Tori just wanted to retread old ground, mixing OG DB with the modern take of SSJ and stuff. And, tbh, as much as I hate for artists to recycle old content, I still prefer this kind of recycling than the Super one (aka, introducing the same characters from the original but with new, altered details and forms, like Frieza Super or Broly Super, or adding a new character that is an exact copy of an original character, barring some minor details, like Cell Max). At least here, they bother to add new characters and designs to the mix, even if they repeat a few formulae. And also, the Minotaur just got scared of Glorio and Goku SSJ, for all we know he might be more powerful than Tambourine, who was a big shot in the old days.
As for the magic issue, the two options I see are that, either demons call Ki "magic" and don't know what real magic is, or the concept of magic as we know it doesn't apply much in Dragon Ball (being more like new varieties of Ki abilities), which would be a big shame, especially in a series that is so obviously trying to evocate feelings of RPG adventures. There is the fact that Babidi kinda used magic in DBZ, and some other characters have claimed to being able to use it (such as Moro), so who knows.
I don't particularly care for the Kaioshin's new, established origin as demons; just one of those random retcons that Tori seemed to like to add, for whaetever reason. I would prefer for the Shin-jins (or Glinds) to just be a magical, celestial species, separated from the Demon Realm.
The fight between Glorio and Goku was nice, but left me wanting more of Goku pounding the Mira wannabe.
Overall, a strong episode, but I agree with others that it's time for the series' plot to move forward substantially and flow a bit more organically, for exciting things to happen, and for some toning down on exposition and lore dumps...especially when the lore dumps are starting to become lore retcons, sort of like Dragon Ball midiclorians.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 6 - Official Discussion Thread
Been away from the forum/fandom for a while now, so I really don't have any idea how the general community is responding to Daima so far, but just wanted to drop this here and see if I'm on an island or if there is some consensus that can be found on this.
To put it bluntly, I just think this show is a genuine slog to sit through, and with this episode, I'm started to get very frustrated with the pacing and how things are going. I quite literally feel like I've been watching the same episode every week since episode 3. I keep waiting for the actual "plot" to start, and it just never does. It continues to feel as though the series is spinning its wheels week after week, with virtually no sense of building drama or intrigue. We know what the ultimate conflict/goal is, but we've kinda just spent the past 4 episodes aimlessly wandering around a wasteland. To be clear, I certainly expected a more lighthearted adventure vibe, and I'm not looking for Cell saga levels of dry seriousness and plot-density, but Jesus Christ, I just yearn for something gripping to actually...happen.
And the thing is, in my opinion, the show isn't even doing a good job at executing its own ideas. The humor is falling completely flat for me. The action sequences, while obviously beautiful to look at, give me nothing to chew on drama wise. The crew we're following is not particularly interesting; they don't have any chemistry, there isn't any good banter going on, no major pieces of character drama within the group. There's just nothing to latch onto there. And then finally, the world itself isn't even an interesting place to explore. The show has done quite a poor job, in my view, at actually presenting this brand new world in an organic way. It's a lot of telling and not much showing. I understanding what they're TRYING to do, but this series just isn't very good at telling this sort of story, unfortunately.
Again, it obviously looks gorgeous, but even for someone like me that deeply values visuals, that still only carries a show so far. I cannot shake the feeling I've had with the last two movies and now this, where all this fancy production value feels like it's being wasted on a weak foundation, that being a sub-par script and story. It's like trying to push a car stuck in the mud; a lot of effort, sure, but you're going nowhere.
This rant was inspired by this episode, because once again we have a case of a really stunning action sequence that just...elicits nothing from me emotionally. I really did have this breaking point while watching this week, because I realized all of the sudden, as I watched Glorio fire a gloriously animated lighting beam at Goku...I didn't care one bit what was happening. And it's sad that that's how I feel about my favorite franchise in 2024. But here we are.
P.S. For the love of god can we PLEASE stop with the poop/fart jokes? I get that Toriyama's sense of humor often relies on this sort of stuff, but my god, it wasn't funny the first time they mentioned farting, and it's certainly not funny the 7th time Goku makes a reference to feces.

Re: Dragon Ball Daima: Episode 6 - Official Discussion Thread
yeah if this wasnt dragon ball but another frianchise I like but dont love as much as dragon ball, this will be the episode I stop watching, they are making the same mistake they did with the first part of GT, but 20 years later, where kids watch mostly short videos on tiktok or youtube, and even adults have they attention span reduced by the times we live, and they decided to release a series as slow as this one, no wonder only hard core fans care about Daima.
I'm sure more people will talk about it when something hype happens, I just hope we dont have to wait untill episode 15+ for it to happen.

I don't really get this complaint about the pacing, personally. If you're not on board with what Daima's doing at this point, feels kind of like a ... not Daima problem.
It's fairly laid back in its pacing, we're on a JRPG type quest, we've got our party. Some episodes are about progress (getting the ship, meeting new party members), some are about a petty in-fight. But even then, there's other stuff going on, fun character dynamics, well executed gags, pretty art/animation, and a plot-reveal or two. The way people here are describing it, it's like they did nothing with the 20 minutes, which I just don't see.
I'm really here for this re-focusing of Dragon Ball as not an incredibly high-stakes fighto-fighto show. I like tuning in, and just enjoying these characters for 20 minutes. I know I couldn't do that with Super, so I'm genuinely grateful that they managed to pull me back in again.

I'm actually just confused on where they're going now...
Apparently the castle wasn't their final destination in this first world, so...are they going to the Dragon Ball or not? I feel like I'm not forgetting anything, but can't be too sure about that.

They're going to challenge the Tamagami guarding the Third Demon World's dragon ball. The plan is basically, as far as I know, "get back our adult bodies then rescue Dende".StaticMania wrote: Sun Nov 17, 2024 1:50 pm I'm actually just confused on where they're going now...

1) if the fans are complaning, the non hardcore fans are not even watching it week to week, and it has almost nothing mayor to discuss after 6 episodes (on a 20 episodes series), maybe it is a Daima problemRory wrote: Sun Nov 17, 2024 1:22 pm I don't really get this complaint about the pacing, personally. 2) there is no character debelopment, I dont expect Goku to have it, but Shin had nothing, all the new stuff is just lore dupms, Glorio is just the quiet nononses jhonen character, they could have give him something, Panzy is just also the jhonen girl token nothing too special or quirky about her is basicaly Bulma if she was GT Pan but not as anoying.
what it has a lot ship plot, evry episode somehting happens with the ship, we get a ship, the ship was stolen, we get another ship, the ship broke, we fix the ship, the ship bulma fix didnt work...
3) I'm happy you and other peapole can enjoy it, I just dont see why cant be more balanced, if you watch the first 6-7 episodes of other good animes you will see, action, character debelopment, humor and maybe even something that makes you emotional, all of that and even more in the same amount of episodes.
it this was the new long DB anime that runs for years, then yeah I wouldnt mind the slow burn as much, but this is suposed to be 20 episodes, it feels like something more impactfull should had happen by now, OG DB was this slow but it had a lot more episodes, even GT had 64.
I'm sure this will change and we are going to get the hype moments, I just wish they didnt make it so slow at the begining.

"OG DB was this slow, but it had more episodes."
It was originally supposed to end at Pilaf, so "originally," it had 13 episodes, and nothing super impactful happened either until the last three. And I'm fine with this, good storytelling works by slow rising action setting up things so they have a good payoff at the end, not constant mindless action.

The seemingly turtles pace the plot is moving at probably won’t speed up until the more active characters show up in Demon World. Goku is seemingly enjoying dragging his feet, Shin is being patient because there’s no real imminent Boo level danger and Glorio and Panzy have no real reason to rush.
Hopefully Glorio seeing now that he’s completely out classed by Goku allows him to take a few more risks with their travels knowing he has such a “big gun” on his side.
Didn’t they initially say Daima was gonna be 24 episodes or something like that? Meaning we’re a potentially a quarter or more way through this story and we still won’t meet any Tomigami’s until maybe episode 10 or so. I’m just hoping they don’t rush things too much once the pacing actually/hopefully pics up.
EDIT:
Even with the original series finding its footing in the beginning, I think by the time we got to episode 7-8 we had already met, Umigame, Roshi, Yamcha, Puar, ChiChi, and Ox King on top of him receiving Kintoun and learning the Kamehameha. By the time the original series got to episode 9 or so the protagonist were gearing up for the final confrontation with Pilaf. All in all, Things happened! And by the time DB was green lit for animation I think the story was probably going neck deep into the Red Ribbon Arc manga wise. So it’s not like Toei had “finality” in mind when finishing up the Pilaf arc.

It's not too late. One day, it will be.
