No.
sangofe wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 3:23 pmYou fail to mention Toyotarou has not had a competent editor.
That doesn't change the fact that, based on these interviews, he doesn't know what he's doing.
sangofe wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 3:23 pmThere's plenty of people who think he's a competent story writer and competent to be the main writer.
The fan base's standards have not been the highest since Super's debut, so I'm not sure him being liked by these same fans holds much weight.
sangofe wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 3:23 pmI was more than happy with the Moro arc.
I will say it showed potential, but he completely dropped the ball with the following arc.
sangofe wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 3:23 pmYou may not think he's not good enough but that doesn't mean everyone thinks the same as you do.
Being right can be lonely sometimes.
Thank you for this comment (and all the previous ones), I completely agree with your statements about Toyotaro's ineptitude.

I am very sorry that for a large part of the fandom he is considered some sort of Toriyama's successor, when we all know he is just an Jump employee unable to create anything on his own.

I would love for someone like Nakatsuru, Fenyo, or any artist suitable for this job to take on the role of drawing the DBS manga.

Oh no I have bad news for you about the nature of decades-later Dragon Ball sequel mangas!

(I do like his writing philosophy in general!)

But yeah it's been 35 years, and it was "just his job", so remembering the characters and being a Big Nerd isn't much of a thing.
Speaking of Koyama... well, if you're able to get in contact with him anytime in the future, I kind of had some questions about Bio-Broly that I'd like to ask him.

Specifically, how does he (and the rest of the DB anime writing team of that time) look back on that movie. Do they have a soft spot for it or anything?

In addition, he mentioned how Broly was (in his eyes) the strongest DB baddie, yet we still got Janemba and Hirudegarn later down the line. Were there any plans for an original villain in Movie 11, or was it always set to be (a version of) Broly?

Finally, why was TOEI seemingly so gung-ho about the idea that Gohan would be the main character of 'Z'?
Long before the Majin Buu arc rolled around, TOEI seemed to have all sorts of pre-production material that seemed to point to them strongly banking on the idea that Gohan was going to be THE main character from the jump, so to speak.

Anyone can ask him! Just @ him on twitter ^^

1) write with japanese grammar in mind
A) subject + verb + complement
B) replace all pronouns with name of person+ -san
C) use no prepositional verbs or ideomatic expressions ("look up" -> "admire" ; "was over your head with..." -> "overwhelmed" )
2) run it through google translate or deepL.
3) retranslate it back to another language you know (if possible) to check for mistakes.

I think I can answer the "why no Gohan MC", it's Toriyama's directives, Toei had no control over the narrative and Toriyama himself corrected the whole "Gohan's grand adventure" title back to Z saying "Goku is still very much the MC" or something like that (paraphrased).

As for Z Broly, he's his biggest fanboy and it took everyone's energy to beat him (including Broly himself), so he'll always defend him and say he's the strongest because of course he is XD

Bio Broly questions tho, fun stuff! Here's the search function on Koyama's twitter profile with "bio broly", so feel free to check his previous answers/tweets about it.

Yeah the Gohan thing is pretty clear IMO, Toriyama did fully 100% transition him into MC by the end of Cell/beginning of Buu. Hence Toei followed with new opening and promo material. The fact that then Tori made a 180 u-turn is a different thing (and the biggest mistake DB did IMO :P )

Ehhh the Gohan thing was answered in a bunch of interviews with Toriyama... With the rebranding of the anime (and making it Z because "that's the end of the story" lol), Toei believed it would transition to Gohan but it was Toriyama who said "nah Goku's still the MC" [he's just dead right now but that's a temp thing lol].

Gohan was supposed to be the sole MC for the Buu Arc onwards but Toriyama changed his mind because Gohan as a character couldn't quite fill this role (my opinion; Gohan isn't a character with a lot of agency himself, he reacts to the plot, he doesn't cause it).

In other news, I've published another article with the question about "what's the future of the franchise?" from this press conference.
