Yeah that's true, the quotes with no context are doing him no favors that's for sure lolKenji wrote: Thu Jun 04, 2026 8:02 am Problem with the quotes in this thread in particular, with zero context behind what he's saying, is that he comes off as a racist old man yelling at a cloud, which doesn't really help any discussion. Someone made another thread with more context, and I think that's better.
My problem in particular comes with people defending shit like "Only the Japanese can make real manga" with "It's just a persona!"
Oh, okay. I didn't find that endearing or funny. Can someone explain what's so funny about that? I'll wait.
And about that statement, what can I say, I think this one REALLY needs more context because it could easily be something like "only a japanese person can accurately embody the japanese spirit and culture that makes manga unique" or something along those lines, which might still be controversial, but I'd understand where he was coming from at least, bar a few exceptions, I don't think the majority of non japanese people can make a manga that feels japanese. Not impossible though
I think that's what he meant, but regardless, it doesn't strike me as a comedic statement or a persona, I think this one is his genuine opinion.
If that's not what he meant, and he used manga not as "japanese comics" but "comics" as a whole, then yeah, big disagree, it would be really silly to say that only japanese people can make good comics lol
