We have only received one actual letter to date (I verified with the DBZ Brand Manager before adding this post).
Guess it got through after all. At least we know that they will acknowledge mail, but a petition will probably be ignored.

Quoted for TRUTH!

Anyways, Mike, I think a main page announcement would be probably the most helpful thing to this letter campaign. There's got to be tons of people who check out the main page and the podcast without giving the forum a thought.

When someone asks you for information and says "Wanted to ask about what avenue people should pursue if they wish to contact FUNimation about the DBZ discs. A lot of people are angry and want to be heard so they are pouring their efforts into online petitions, which you and I know are practically worthless. I'd like to give them a means to contact FUNimation directly, since I know from both commercial and political efforts that it is the best way to make an impact," it's safe to say they want information for public posting. Still, she appears to have been upset (by what I have no idea, she gave an address and told me it'd take a bunch of letters to change FUNi's mind which is hardly a libelous statement against the company).

Oh well. It's still a good idea (the letters, I mean).

-Corey
It's probably safe to say that FUNi doesn't want an assload of letters, nor do they want to have to spend a lot of money on a new set. They just did one. She did say some execs were watching the site, so it's possible that they saw your post, asked around about which rep it was that said that, and consequently had to have a "talk" with her. If you have or have had an office job then I'm sure you know how these things go. She was being frank in the confidence that it would remain between the two of you, so now she feels that her trust was violated.

Just a theory, but if you're still confused about it, it might be something along those lines.

I actually have worked office jobs for the past 6 years (I'm currently an A/R Rep for a group of pathologists, which means I deal with accounting and insurance companies with regards to reimbursement and misinterpretation of contracts and/or AMA guidelines for medical coding), and in those jobs even when being frank I've always said only what I'd be comfortable with being made public knowledge. Again, the way I had approached her to begin with (being that I asked for information on behalf of the DBZ community, not myself) lent itself to the implication that I was going to make it public.

I've apologized to her, though if she had just emailed me I would have gladly edited the posts.

Wait, so what did the rep say exactly? I haven't been able to find any reps' posts.

I certainly wasn't criticizing you; just trying to offer some perspective; that's all. I, too, have held an office job at a medical center (IT department) and I know that harmless things are often blown way out of proportion up the ladder. So even if there wasn't anything inherently wrong with your exchanges, it could have been misinterpreted by a third party, who then came down on her, and hence—bad feelings.

Again though, I'm just being speculative. I don't assume she's contacted you back and clarified?

This is a great idea and a much better approach then an online petition. I'm willing to try whatever ideas people come up with (ok maybe not "whatever" idea.... ) in order to send a message to FUNImation about our concerns . I'm going to also mail a letter.... hopefully it gets there. Individual letters will probably be the best means of contacting the company with widespread disatisfaction. Here goes nothing...

P.S. Um Corey....any chance the text of that letter can be transferred to another format. I don't have Mircrosoft Word.... Well if worse comes to worse I will just copy the damn thing. Thanks for the info!

Nah, her work hours mean that by the time I apologized she was gone for the day. And yes, I understood that you weren't being personal, I just wanted to clarify my own experience. Sorry if I came off sounding dickish. Unfortunately, I have had some people misinterpret my words, which is why I'm doubly careful in these situations. It seems that in this case, it was not enough and now I've got someone angry at me when it was far from my intention >_<;

Either way, back on topic. Maphisto86, I'll transfer the letter to rich text format so you can use it tomorrow. Meanwhile, hopefully Mike will link this on the main page *cough* ;)

I'll be mailing out my own letter tomorrow. Here's hoping we get some sort of response!

People still in highschool and college should go around trying to get other fans of the series to send out a letter as well.

Even if they don't like DBZ, see if they like anime period; I think any anime fan in general could understand something like this, so it's worth a try. And I've even seen some highschools with anime clubs, talk to them, and tell them to help spread it around to their friends and through the net!

Though I see where you're coming from, the last time I went to my high school's anime club (two years ago) they were... less than happy to have DB as part of their club. Then again, some guy in my homeroom is now the club's president, so I'll see what I can do there.

Corey, I really appreciate you taking the time to produce this form letter and organizing this effort. My letter and those of my friends at home will be in the mail asap.

I'm amazed at how this is developing in a mature way that may actually produce results, and that's a huge credit to Mike and this forum (and everybody here)

I've been a fan for a while (following Planet Namek => 3G => DaizEX) and I'm glad I finally decided to check out the forum here :)

Man, this is a better idea. I am so going to mail my letter soon. Even if I live in Singapore, I am going to send the letter. It might be a long way from here but as you guys all said. Each letter can do its part.

While I commend Corey's work and everyone's actual initiative to make Funimation hear what the fans want, I don't think I'll be sending any letters and for a good reason.

It was made clear to me by Funi's bs tech explination and season 1 release, that they either are unable or unwilling to shell out the cash for a proper, extensive film remastering. If Funimation is unable to clean up something as easy as bits of film grain, there's no way they can repair the tops and bottoms of the film prints, which probably have extensive damage.

What this means is that even if they were to re-release the series "remastered" in its proper 4:3 aspect ratio, they would achieve it by zooming the film in past the damaged parts, and then chopping off enough from the left and the right of the film as well to keep everything in proper proportion.

The bottom line is, no matter what we do we're still going to lose a significant enough peice of the picture. That being the case, I'm actually okay with losing even more of it to create a 16:9 picture, it feels like I actually get something out of it in return. If I'm not going to get the full picture from Funimation, they would have to do something else or I might as well buy the R2 DVD's from Toei.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from trying to get Funimation from changing their minds, I just hope everyone who decides to write them a letter will keep that in mind. There's no real "right" answer here...just the lesser of two wrong ones.
