This is the point.Fine. People are going to blindly love it because Akira Toriyama had involvement in it. Whatever. Again, if he didn't, peoples' opinions would change. Funny isn't it? And then there's the whole argument, "Yeah well he created it! So if he did, it's gold!" Yeah, yeah. That's a great way to judge the series by the way. Just like most other fans. "He didn't write it, therefore it's crap!" Yeah. That right there is a great way to determine what parts of the series you like. Don't even have a mind of your own, just latch onto what others are saying and latch onto Akira Toriyama.
What would you change about the Jump Special?
I understand what they were trying to do with this special, and I enjoyed certain parts, but it definitely didn't live up to my expectations. I guess you can't hope for too much in 35 minutes though. I just think they should have made it longer and put more thought into the story. The animation was half and half for me, sometimes it looked good and others I missed the old style.

You do understand that when someone disagrees with you, you aren't obligated to take it as a personal affront and then go on a long winded incoherent rant about how it's a big conspiracy and how nobody else's opinion is valid except yours.TheGreatness25 wrote: *cranky ramblings*
Believe it or not, people like this special because they actually enjoyed watching it, not because of Toriyama's involvement.

I've found that most people that didn't like this special really enjoyed movie 8. Says a lot doesn't it? I mean what did people expect ? It takes place 2 years after the end of the Majin Buu saga! Everyone is so powerful now there really is nothing out there that can be a threat anymore. If anything the special shows WHY Mr. Toriyama ended the series.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

I'll never understand what people see in the Broli movies.
As for the special, the ten year gap is referred to as "peaceful", which left them with fairly limited options, they couldn't have a battle that threatened to destroy the planet, so they came up with some villains that were never a real threat and didn't disrupt enough to merit a mention down the road, it makes sense and it works.
I do think some more back story on Table would have been nice (I'm a sucker for planet Vegeta flashbacks) and the special definitely could have been longer.

Yeah I really liked the special too. I'm so glad that it was not some false drama and it actually tried to tap in more to the comdiec aspects of the DB series like how it was in the pre-Z arcs. Friggin, I actually was getting kinda pissed when I saw that there were villains until I saw that they weren't a big deal and that the special's tone was still comedy. It honestly felt really good hell I even liked the animation.
So no complaints from me.

Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Exactly. Toriyama probably ended the series when he did because he really went all out with Buu. Buu was almost indestructible and the main character was dead and then Vegeta was dead and then they fused to become a super warrior and by this time each could destroy a planet by themselves if they wanted and etc. etc.Chrono Trigger wrote:I've found that most people that didn't like this special really enjoyed movie 8. I think he felt there wasn't anything that could top it, Goku and Vegeta had reached a God like status by this point... how could he show you an enemy that is so ridiculously powerful that would be a challenge and still be interesting to the reader again?
So I'm sure Toriyama thought a more interesting approach would be a set of enemies who, if they arrived at their PL earlier in the series, would be a very serious threat... but "Freeza's level" was nothing to them anymore. In fact, you could infer if the series continued it would have been approach like that.
I like Movie 8 and I like this special. haha. Movie 8 is actually a really good one IMO. When I first saw it, it was during the Cell saga before the Cell Games so seeing Broly violently grab Gohan by the head and drag him through a building was pretty awesome. But Movie 10 really hurt Broly's character for me... and by Movie 11 TOEI destroyed the character completely with the very lame bio-warrior idea. He looked ridiculous.
I like the DBZ movies, but most of them feel "hollow" to me compared to the series. They have action, but the interesting things that happen between the action is missing. Toriyama likes to pull things out of nowhere which is part of what makes his story telling so interesitng.... like suddenly Cell stops Trunks and says "Hey we'll have a tournament!"
Or suddenly out of nowhere a mysterious purple haired guy with a sword kills Freeza for Goku.
Or suddenly out of nowhere hey the girl who likes Gohan is Mr. Satan's daughter!
Or suddenly out of nowhere hey the saiyan who arrived on Earth is Goku's BROTHER!
Or suddenly out of nowhere, this goofy fat looking thing is the terror of the universe Majin Buu. Surprise! Bet you didn't expect that!
... that's why Toriyama's work is a little more interesting. He pulls things like that that draw you in to keep you reading/watching.

Hmm I don't fit into that category and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. And this is coming from someone who enjoys character interaction and story more than the fights in the series. In fact, some of my favorite episodes are the "peaceful" ones. It was alright for what it is, but there was something lacking, and I think it may have been the length. It was just too short to finish the story it started.
Having said that, I don't hate it or think it's crap or anything. I was happy to have something new Dragon Ball related, and enjoyed it for what it was. The interaction between Goku and Vegeta was pretty entertaining. Especially at the end "Vegeta, look!" I plan on watching it a few more times, maybe it will grow on me more.

Yeah. I don't like the special and don't really like any movie. I think the only reason I like the Tree of Might is because of when I was exposed to it. I like the Super Android 13 movie, and the Cooler's Revenge movie, but not sure how I'd feel if I watched it now anyway. Hated Broly.
And people are right about the special. It's a fun little story. But certainly not a grand sendoff to the series. Maybe that's why it didn't live up to it for me? I don't know. Just something didn't click and I don't know what it is. Could just be that I was hoping for closure in the series, but this didn't give that to me.

Not really, they do Lupin the 3rd, Kochikame, and Doremon specials every year. That's why everyone's in the notion that Toei should really conisder doing DB specials every year. The universe is huge and there's definitely a lot of material that Toriyama could explore.

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me on this since a lot of people hate Broly but I always thought they should of had Broly as the last movie guy or even a short saga to end Z. As in his first apperance shouldn't of been till after Buu. The saiyans had become so powerful that where are you going to get someone to challenge them? Oh wait theres another saiyan out there that has the power from legends. They could of changed his character and back story even called him something else for all I care. I just always thought another saiyan would be a good closer but it would have to of been the saved for the end since we couldn't haveZenkai Power wrote:

Broly (or whoever) showing up constantly.
BTW: I liked movie 8 and I liked the special.

I disagree, to me it felt like the logical evolution of the guy we saw sacrifice himself two years prior, then admit that his greatest rival was a superior fighter. The Time Traveller wrote:Vegeta chaaaaaanged too much in this movie, he used to be the Anti-Goku, now he's almost Goku.
They've been at peace for two years, it made sense to me that Vegeta had mellowed out a little.
About Vegeta wolfing down his food Kakkarot-style,, well I think that's the way Saiyans eat - the special and that bit from the pre Buu saga Tournament arc, reveal that. Just that we have hardly been shown instances of Vegeta eating anything but senzu beans, 'cause otherwise it would ruin his badass image.
Just Saiyan...

This Special was amazing, It was not meant to be epic it was meant to be fun, even the narrator says that it was a unimportant event. You got to love any special in which Yamcha gets to be a hero.
