I believe Mai calls him 'Soba', over the phone... Both in Viz and the Japanese version. Though it's been a while since I've had the Japanese copy of that in my hands... Can anyone verify (or not)?
That's about all my memory can give me, but I'd say readers wouldn't send in letters to Toriyama asking why Soba was later named Shuu if the name is never even mentioned.

Yep... in the Japanese version, he's called "Soba" over the radio in his first appearance, and then "Shuu" when he appears again after the Uranai Baba arc. This was addressed in a "Toriyama-san's Ask-Me-Anything Corner!" letter from around volume 10, where Toriyama admitted that he'd forgotten he had given him a name previously, so he made up the names "Shuu" and "Mai" for the anime. He then used their anime names when they reappeared in the manga.
Viz, on the other hand, decided to keep his name consistent... but what they gained in consistency, they lost in punniniess, since "shuumai" is Japanese for a kind of Chinese food (called "shao mai," I believe, but I'm not sure what's in it).
So... hope that straightens things out.

Which page was this? I can't remember anyone talking to him on the radio.

I can't check, because I don't have any of the volumes with me at school.
However, it's right around the first frame that he's in, around chapter 17 or 18, I believe.

It's chapter 18, but Shuu doesn't talk in any radio.
Mai does, but she's talking to Pilaf.

It's quote mania!!
Anyway, how can you tell? I no longer have the Japanese version, but as far as my memory serves me, she is talking to Soba, about the car with the Dragon Balls on it... I can't remember her ever mentioning Pilaf's name, nor would it be of any use doing so..
I could be wrong, though. It's been a while since I had the Japanese version of that. Viz translates it in that manner, though.
Yet still... People wouldn't know what Soba's name was if it was never ever mentioned in the manga. It
has to have been mentioned at least once, and I believe it was during that phone call with Mai.

I could be mistaken, but is there someone actually talking about the original thread question above you there?
Weird...

Of course there isn't, I'm just totally whoring out in order to win an argument, just to feed my ego to even further ridiculous proportions.
I'm good at it, too. Not to mention I'm devilishly handsome and have spectacular martial arts powers.

Yeah? Well I can transform Car Robots Fire Convoy without opening my eyes. I think we both know which one the ladies prefer.

But can you transform the Optimus Prime from the original Transformers Generation 1 series?! Hunh?! Can you?! BIOTCH?!
Neither can I. It got stolen when I was 10.
No wait, that's sad.

For your information, it's more interesting than this long Soba / Shuu discussion...

These things need to be cleared up, before we can go back to long arguments about how many timelines there were during the Cell era of DBZ.

I feel for your sadness. But yes, I can. Besides, you can always buy another one. They're only about £20 at Toys R Us.
Of course, if you had any sense, you'd go and buy the 20th anniversary/Masterpiece Prime. For it is awesome.

Yeah, well you might find more posters who want to contribute if you don't talk about these things in the video games section... Meh. Either way, it's turned into a transformer-transforming contest, or something. I guess that is related to games after all, isn't it?

Hey, we got to two pages of people saying who they wanted to see in a Dragonball-era Budokai, before things went of track. That's pretty good. And as long as I get my favourite ninja dude and gay general with psychic powers, I'm happy.

Going back to the Shuu/Soba discussion, here's the quote from the danish manga of Mai talking to Pilaf:
Mai: Prince Pilaf, message from SectorH-15. A vehicle has just passed.
Pilaf: Good. It must be them. Take my plan into action.
Mai: Understood!
Mai: They're on their way to the palace.
Pilaf: Can you see what they're bringing?
Mai: Yes, prince Pilaf. I can see... ...they're bringing their DRAGON BALLS!
(ooh, suspense. Nevermind the fact that Pilaf isn't a prince, he's not an emperor either.)

Mai does talk to Pilaf... For two panels. The third panel (Most leftbottom one), has her talking to Soba. Short, but enough to establish the name for him, causing confusion for DB Fans when Toriyama suddenly names him 'Shuu'.
Flaunting of ridiculously useless Dragon Ball Knowledge for the day: Check.

There are 4 panels:
---------
Panel 1:
Mai: Prince Pilaf, message from SectorH-15. A vehicle has just passed.
---------
Panel 2:
Pilaf: Good. It must be them. Take my plan into action.
Mai: Understood!
----------
Panel 3:
Mai: They're on their way to the palace.
Pilaf: Can you see what they're bringing?
----------
Panel 4:
Mai: Yes, prince Pilaf. I can see... ...they're bringing their DRAGON BALLS!
---------
If she really WAS talking to Shuu/Soba in the third panel, why did she mentoin Pilaf in the fourth? Wait, I know. Crappy translators.

Unless someone posts an exact translation of the Japanese version of the manga, this will never end...

Yup. I'm basing my assumptions on the English and Dutch translations, which both have the same scene of Mai talking to Soba, and on a vague memory of the Japanese version... But I can still be as wrong as a pair of boots, though. How a pair of boots can be considered 'wrong', I'll leave to your imagination...
Doesn't Julian have all the Dragon Ball Kanzenban so far?
