The only ones I can think of are Colonel Brown & General Copper of the Red Ribbon Army.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

It looks like there will be a chapter 9. At the rate the anime is going, it wouldn't be a surprise if the manga continued, staying a little ahead.

Why wouldn't there be a Chapter 9? There was nothing in this month's issue about it ending and there are reports that the series is going to be collected into a volume for release in April (I think it was). There would be zero reason for that with a rushed Beerus Arc, a skipped Golden Freeza Arc and an incomplete Champa Arc. That would be a terrible product. xD

That's great news! No, it's just that people in this thread and the episode threads keep referring to this manga as "just a promo". But since the anime has passed RoF now, it would seem unnecessary to have the manga if it were only a promo.

I generally prefer manga to anime, but having both does give us two interpretations of the same story and it's not a bad thing. If it continues and makes it into print I'd certainly get it. The artworks great and the story is still fun.

Freeza stuff may as well be included in collected volume, it was drawn just few months prior to Super manga.

I would agree if it were finished. Without the climax being included, it doesn't serve much of a purpose in terms of storytelling.

It will probably jump all over the place like it did before when anime catch up, and it is JUST a promo. I love manga like any other "manga lover", but not like this. Monthly promotion by a different author is a no no for me, at least in a sense of owning that "manga".

The manga will never get behind.

I don't know, last chapter was pretty slow. The manga might have been upgraded to be it's own thing. There's already some differences from the anime and the promotional factor doesn't matter much now. Once the new material was reached on the anime, people were talking about avoiding the manga because of spoilers.

There are a lot of differences, but nothing major, it's still the same story. Manga is promo, it will probably jump all over the place once anime catches up.

I really don't want get spoiled about major fights in this tournament, so for me this manga purposed has ended, it was only promotional, right? To we know that new content was in fact coming and we could bear the boredom that was the retold Arcs.

Now we're on U6 Arc, there's no meaning anymore to extend.

It's apparently getting its own volume release though. Unless that performs pretty badly, I guess they now intend to keep it running to the end.

I believe the Dragon ball Super anime is the "original" story. I don't think it would matter if the anime caught the manga. Both are pretty much the same.
