That's not accurate at all -- it was also used all throughout season three.jjgp1112 wrote:Rock The Dragon hasn't been used since the Ocean Dub. It was made by Shuki Levi. The only time in the last 10 years that it was actually used was for the U.S. Budokai 1 intro.jordanator wrote:Oh well.
So was ''Rock The Dragon'' made by the Faulconer guy?
Note when I say "season three", I'm referring to the actual "seasons" that FUNimation had in terms of television broadcast (and its corresponding home release) -- not the orange bricks. It's right there on all the Ginyu/Freeza individual discs.
It also showed up on an American release of Taiko Drum Master...

Interesting...I just watched Season 3 on Toonami prior to the remastered sets, so I never saw the actual intros for those ones. Not only that, but the VHS releases (not sure about the DVD editions) also included a brief "Stand by for Dragon Ball Z!" announcement featuring The Ocean Group's Doc Harris.VegettoEX wrote:Note when I say "season three", I'm referring to the actual "seasons" that FUNimation had in terms of television broadcast (and its corresponding home release)

Even Toonami used an instrumental of Rock the Dragon in the end credits of Season 3. Then they switched to the Faulconer guitar theme during Garlic Jr.jjgp1112 wrote:Interesting...I just watched Season 3 on Toonami prior to the remastered sets, so I never saw the actual intros for those ones. Is it me or is there a lot more pixelation on some of the fight scenes than the previous FUNi Dboxes?

Yeah, there seems to be more macro-blocking this time around. Since nobody has given us comparison shots with the Japanese boxes, we can't determine whether it's the sources, or if the intensity of the fight scenes is too much for FUNimation's compression. If it means anything, even the "Orange Bricks" had more compression than usual during the same scenes.Castor Troy wrote:Is it me or is there a lot more pixelation on some of the fight scenes than the previous FUNi Dboxes?
Here's a link to a post I made detailing some of the more compressed shots.

The episode numbers are in the linked post, but how do I get the time section? I can tell you what time they are at on FUNimation's release, but I'm certain it would be vastly different to the Japanese release which has different episodes on different discs.Krycek7o2 wrote:I can help out.

I'm going to take a guess and say that both episodes 100 and 102 are on the 17th disc of the first japanese dragon box zKrycek7o2 wrote:I can help out.Metalwario64 wrote:Yeah, there seems to be more macro-blocking this time around. Alright. Any advice on which player to use for screens? I'm guessing VLC? I rarely ever do this.pjay wrote: I'm going to take a guess and say that both episodes 100 and 102 are on the 17th disc of the first japanese dragon box z

Use media player classic (make sure you save it as a .png) and resize it to 640x480 in a image editing program.Krycek7o2 wrote:Alright. Any advice on which player to use for screens? I was told download this when doing screens:jjgp1112 wrote:Use media player classic (make sure you save it as a .png) and resize it to 640x480 in a image editing program.Krycek7o2 wrote:Alright. I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

Well, then this should be easy, I've had that pack installed for a while now. I'll check if there's an update, if not expect screens in about an hour or so..:PoetikaL:. wrote:

Anyways, I (probably pointlessly)decided to compare that macroblocked scene from the Dragon Box to the Orange Brick:
In the first shot, the Orange Brick probably technically has more noise and compression, although it's clearly more pronounced on the Dragon Box... It's definitely more noticeable on their skin in the Dragon Box, but it clearly looks worse on Goku's pants on the Orange Brick footage... It's a shame though, but I still wonder if it is compressed at all on the Japanese Dragon Box footage... In case an episode number is needed, it's at the end of episode 102: "Let's Get It On!! Two Remain On a Vanishing Planet".
In the second shot, the Orange Brick mostly suffers from FUNi's "remastering" (noticeable on the smearing of Frieza's after-image head, and the lines being removed from the scuffs on Goku's right arm), but noise-wise looks like it has more colorful mosquito noise going on in Goku's hair, but again the compression is more noticeable on the Dragon Box. I'm guessing the "smoothed"(smeared) footage of the orange bricks is simply easier to compress than the grainy, sharp Dragon Box. Not to mention the extra video and audio animation being packed into those discs...
Also, another scene really jumped out at me while watching it on my TV. It was during the scene where Goku and Frieza have a "beam struggle" at the beginning of episode 100: "I Am Son Goku's Son!! Gohan Returns to the Battlefield" When Frieza flies out of the blast, it looks okay regardless of the flashing:
Although, when he starts to rotate... the image falls apart:
I just don't get it. Is FUNimation's encoding slipping? I never noticed this much compression on Dragon Box 1 or 2, even in incredibly flashy scenes such as Goku and Vegeta's beam struggle.
Well, I tried my best to get as close as possible to the R1 Disc.
Its obvious that these scenes are very taxing. I am guessing Funi lowering the bit rate on their discs is really bringing out the flaws from the R2 footage.
I can retake these pictures in any other player if anyone wants.
Episode 102
Macro Blocking Is Evident

Episode 100
Very Little Macro Blocking

Thanks for clearing that up. I knew about region codes I just didn't know that was shorthand for it.
Also, I read this review from dvdverdict
"A fair amount of grain is evident, but this is a two decade old animation, and frankly, one would expect as much."
what exactly is "grain"?
