There are about as many manga chapters as there are episodes. They'll probably be mostly cutting stuff that padded the actual manga storyline to drag it out for longer.LordCrumb wrote:Was there really all that much Filler in the Buu saga? Maybe some of the Great Saiyaman episodes, but everything else is all kind of linked. The tournament and Babidi, the 'Game of Death' style fighting in Babidis ship, the hatching of Buu and all his stages..
I don't think they need to cut a lot.

Re: Buu Saga Kai
Just tossing in what I feel is going on, though I've seen it mentioned before, Buu saga Funimation dub has been a work in progress for a while.
- Both Sean and Kyle probably thought they were clear to announce their roles which is why they clearly did so on social media (and also explains the quick removal of their posts once they were told they had to keep it hush-hush for the moment).
- Another piece of evidence of this is Sabat's own words talking about having 60 episodes to record dialogue for (though this one I personally never saw a definitive source for, so it could be hearsay).
- Sabat, an employee of Funimation, has to do damage control so he outright states that Funimation is not dubbing anything at the moment. Sean, however, a freelance voice actor gives a different statement - "I cannot comment on the Buu saga". Why not comment? Just say you're not recording it if you're not recording it. As Derek Padula said - classic NDA response.
- So why not announce the Funimation dub of Buu saga right now? I'm assuming to "protect" sales of other DBZ merchandise that's available or will be available soon and not have this announcement overshadow them and potentially put off potential buyers who will wait for Kai stuff instead.
- But wait, did Sabat even lie at all? According to this image from his conversation with Derek Padula, he says "I can confirm with you that the Buu has not been recorded" and NOT "I can confirm with you that the Buu saga has not been recorded". A simple typing error or a clever way of deceiving us without actually lying? (The Buu character may not have been voiced yet, whether it be kid Buu or whatever). Sabat also says in that email "there is still no announcement about Kai in the United States" - this is also not a lie, no one has announced anything yet.
Long story short (too late), Funimation is dubbing Kai and everyone is under NDAs.

Here's the quote where Sabat says that he has licensed the rest of Kai, along with Sean and Kyle's comments.FTLRalph wrote:- Both Sean and Kyle probably thought they were clear to announce their roles which is why they clearly did so on social media (and also explains the quick removal of their posts once they were told they had to keep it hush-hush for the moment).

He said it would be 66 episodes long.

I guess it should be pointed out again that Sabat is not a full-time employee of FUNimation. He's contracted a lot, obviously, and all Dragon Ball projects are recorded at his studio, OkraTron 5000, but that's still being contracted to produce content. I like the term Mike used in his "Beerus" article: "franchise evangelist".

Note how Sabat said they haven't recorded the Buu saga. Not that they aren't currently in the process of recording it.

Toei must think DBZ has another chance on TV given how well BOG did and how popular Heroes is doing. As long if kids buy the toys and other stuff then Toei and Bandai will be happy.coola wrote:Well, I'm honestly surprised Toei decided to air the Buu Saga Kai in Japan. Re: Buu Saga Kai
My own theory is that at the end of the Buu arc there will be a next episode preview for...the new Dragon Ball Heroes anime!! Well I can dream about that at least but them the Buu arc in Japan did get me thinking about their intentions (beyond just Kai being more successful than Toriko's performance on the same time slot).Hellspawn28 wrote:Toei must think DBZ has another chance on TV given how well BOG did and how popular Heroes is doing. A DBH anime would be cool, but I doubt we will see one so soon. It depends how well the merchandise sales for the Buu saga turns out.

...What the hell is with this recent "Pokemon/Yugioh-ize everything" fad going on in Japan?
We have Gundam Build Fighters, Avengers Disc Wars, and Friggin' Dragon Ball Heroes. I know anime has always had a large marketing side tied to it, but lately it's been taken too far.

Cause kids love colectible cards or toys. My brothers generation had Pokemon cards, my generation had Yu Gi Oh and Bionicle after that I think the kids were into that Bakugan or whatever it was called and now I think it's that Skylanders thing that's the rage with all the kids. It's a cycle that's been repeating for decades.

Ahem, this was Toei's aim with DBZ, too, you know; make the anime to sell merchandise.Blade wrote:Dragonball Build Fighters :lolkei17 wrote:

Re: Buu Saga Kai
It was much less so the aim then than it is now, the landscape has most definitely changed considerably. As of 2014, merchandise sales are more or less the primary measure of a show's success - so much so that we're increasingly seeing that they can either justify or end a show's existence.sangofe wrote: Ahem, this was Toei's aim with DBZ, too, you know; make the anime to sell merchandise.
If Toriko's merchandise sales were good, even against tepid TV ratings, Toei wouldn't have pulled the plug.

Re: Buu Saga Kai
Heroes is popular in Japan and a Heroes TV show being one big toy commercial is something that both Toei & Bandai want. If Bandai wants a Heroes TV show then Toei will likely make it since Bandai is one of Toei's head dog these days. You guys may hate the idea, but the kids will love it. The kids are the main target audience, not the older fans like us.

Re: Buu Saga Kai
If anything, a theory that one could posit as to why there hasn't been a Heroes anime yet is because the game is doing so well on its own that it doesn't need the extra (and particularly expensive) promotion.Hellspawn28 wrote:Heroes is popular in Japan and a Heroes TV show being one big toy commercial is something that both Toei & Bandai want. Toei are probably thinking that the Buu arc of Kai will probably suffice as far as product placement goes, as heck - the performance of the game may have had something to do with the decision to broadcast it in the first place!

Re: Buu Saga Kai
Toei and Bandai have a symbiotic relationship. Ever since Japanese Spider-Man introduced giant robots into Tokusatsu (and Battle Fever J, the third Super Sentai, adapted it), Toei has made some serious bank with a marketing tie-in.
In fact, they care far more for toy sales than they do ratings (look what happened to Dragon Ball Kai, with its high ratings, vs the newest Sentai, Kyoryuger, and it's continuing the drop of ratings into sad territories, yet its godly toy sales).
That might be because the fanbase is, at this point, more outside of the ratings age group, and they're just buying a lot of toys, but still.
Toy money is far beyond anything ratings gets them, so they're just happy when they get the cash.
