Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion

I'm really indifferent to the dubbed songs thing. If anything I'd prefer they be left in Japanese. They're really just there to enjoy during action scenes and even when I translated anime for fansub teams I always refused to translate the insert songs because I felt like it was just extra flair and not at all important to the actual plot of the show. Plus the ones that did translate those songs did a superb job of covering half the frame with subtitles when they did that shit which is aesthetically displeasing to say the least.

It'll be cool if they dub the songs for the home release but in the end its really not a deal breaker and doesn't bother me one way or the other. In the case of songs being sung by characters like we have here, I'd rather leave that to the Japanese and not import that stuff over here.

New episode is up. On the written description, it says "Goku finds Vegeta badly beaten after battle. Will he reveal the truth about Goku's father?"

But on the actual video description when you mouse over, it says this.
I found that interesting, even though it's not much.

Edit: They didn't take out the scar. I can imagine new kids being confused by this

On that note, Ayres' laugh as he kills the Saiyans in the flashback is amazing.

Anyway, Vegeta's death here always made me cry. Even here too.

Nice to see Vegeta's Death finally getting the competent dub it deserves. Sabat really nailed the crying/feeling of the scene this time around.

Looks like we got to see what Ayres' laugh in the first episode would of sounded like.

The loss of Bardock's scar in Episode 1 had more to do with making editing the blood out of his death scene easier than a need to remove the scar, I think...

Vegeta: A Super Saiyan is...
(Vegeta flashes back to the past, then it comes back to the present)

Vegeta: Your.... our planet of birth, Planet Vegeta... was not destroyed... in a collision with a giant meteor...
Goku: Don't say any more! You're just hastening your death!
Vegeta: Freeza did it! This after we Saiyans... served as his hands and feet... working as he ordered...! Everyone besides us was killed...! Your father... and my father, the king, as well...! Freeza... was afraid that as the Saiyans gathered strength... a Super Saiyan would be born among us...
Freeza: Just listen to you.
Goku: Vegeta!
(Goku notices that Vegeta has been crying.)
Vegeta: I-I beg you! Freeza... defeat Freeza! Please... by your Saiyan hand...

Goku: I understand. It wasn't that your fellow Saiyans had been killed that was rough on you. (Looking at Freeza) Having to do as he told you must have been worse than anything you could stand. (Putting Vegeta in the hole he made) I hated you so much... but you had your Saiyan pride. (Goku covers Vegeta up) And now, I, too, will share in some of that pride of yours.
(Goku stands up)
Goku: I am a Saiyan raised on Earth! (to Freeza) For all the Saiyans who were killed by you... as well as for all the Namekians here... I am going to beat you!
Freeza: Such drivel.

Given that, the dialogue this time around, for Kai, was much more faithful, but not as good as it could have been. I felt like they still made it a little bit like Vegeta was sad about losing his people, rather than crying about his pride being wounded.

Sabat performed well, but Schemmel sounded like an angry father lecturing his son.

All in all, it was a lot better than dubbed DBZ, but not nearly as good as Japanese DBZ or Kai.

Side note....HOW DARE THEY even begin to compare/clump together DBZKai, RushZone, and Zevo-3.

They aren't even in the same universe of quality or amazingness.

I guess hell must be freezing over, but I actually agree with your opinion on Schemmel in this scene. He was off in this one. As much as I make it known that I love Sean Schemmel as Goku he didn't sound too great here at least it was better than the Z dub.

There was one moment in the episode I thought Schemmel nailed, though. When Piccolo asked if he really wants to take Freeza on by himself and he says, "I do!" It's just a small line, but was well delivered, with a little playful cockiness.

Awesome episode tonight! Sabat, Ayers, and Schemmel were awesome. Watching Freeza and Goku's interactions in English was particularly enjoyable for me. My favorite of the returning cast (Schemmel) and my favorite of the re-casts (Ayers)...the episodes to come are going to be heaven for me!

Really? It wasn't really all that faithful. It was Vegeta whining about how Freeza forced him to be evil making it sound like if it weren't for Freeza he would be a good guy. Instead of pleading that Goku avenge their people he said that he didn't want Frieza to corrupt any one else. This one seems much better imo.

I remember in the old dub when Vegeta said "If there is a God (referring to a Christian God) he must be good for letting me live long enough to see this day... Frieza defeated by a Saiyan". The reference to a Christian God always was jarring to me.

It's alright if you enjoyed FUNi's original version of that scene, but do know this is a far more accurate translation, which it *should be*.

This episode was brilliant. Especially Sabat.

I thought that the TV edits were going to butcher Vegeta's death, but it was all tastefully done.

... Ayres' Freeza is ear sex, by the way.

This time around the dialog was actually ACCURATE! Vegeta said pretty much what he should have said! So did Son! Read Penguintruth's quote just under your post.

in FUNimation's original Dub, Vegeta's plea was... quite frankly, bullshit. It was them trying to rewrite Vegeta's dialog to make you feel like he wasn't so much of a bad guy. The original has him literally say at one point "He [Freeza] MADE ME what I am!" They rewrote it so that Vegeta outright states that he isn't a bad guy, that it's ALL Freeza.

I'm sorry, but that's blatantly wrong.

Vegeta is an evil bastard and he knows it. The dub created an excuse for him, which is wrong.
The new dub doesn't do this, and it makes me VERY Happy.

FUNi's original dub makes him out to be like a child who

Schemmel's Goku when he first arrived at the battle was much better than what I've seen before. I wish he could've stayed like that for the rest of the episode.

Schemmel was a bit off in the second half of the episode tonight, but overall, the cast continued performing at an admirable level. I pulled out the manga to compare the lines for Vegeta's death, and they were pretty close. I also agree with the statement about Ayers' laugh in the flashback of destroying Planet Vegeta: awesome.

One thing a little off-putting was that this episode was nearly 2 minutes shorter than the standard episode of Kai (it ran 19:33, whereas normal episodes, even on Nicktoons, are about 21:45). I never saw the Japanese version of this episode, but I'm assuming that they edited out quite a good amount of Freeza beating up Vegeta.
