DragonBall Z Abridged
Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
Does the word Filter actually change Hercule?
ETA: It does.

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
Abridged uses the dub as a basis. It uses Tien, for instance. So I imagine Hercule would be included, too, although I expect some jokes on the subject. What makes it less cut and dry is that Mr. Satan is still his name in the dub. They just embellished it by adding Hercule. I'd expect a Mark joke, too, although that's one of those off hand comments from Toriyama that was never published in the original work. I'd hate to see him be constantly called Mark by people in the show itself.Drabaz wrote:The introduction of Mr. Satan is a good opportunity to make the hundreds of thousands of casual Funimation dub fans aware that the H-word is not his real name. As a show that is watched by countless fans of DBZ and has a huge influence on the series, you could change the future of good ol' Mark Satan. If you choose to that is.

While we use the dub as a basis, we also still call Tien Tenshinhan on occasion. NOT "Tien Shin Han," but Tenshinahan. We also try and use all the original music, as well as try to make sure both sides are represented well, while making fun of the worse parts of the original dub.

Didn't you say in your interview after the first season (Podcast episode 180) that you're going to use Hercule?KaiserNeko wrote:While we use the dub as a basis, we also still call Tien Tenshinhan on occasion. We will be referencing Hercule, but he will commonly be referred to as Mr. Satan and Hercule is not going to be his ACTUAL name.SHINOBI-03 wrote:Didn't you say in your interview after the first season (Podcast episode 180) that you're going to use (the H-word)?KaiserNeko wrote:While we use the dub as a basis, we also still call Tien Tenshinhan on occasion. Also you need to check the end of episode 30 on their main website man :p You MUST have missed that :pTonyTheTiger wrote:Abridged uses the dub as a basis. It uses Tien, for instance. Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
Nah, I saw it. The "Mark Satan" thing is a good gag but anything Mark-related comes from outside of the show itself (and years after it ended) so it's not a joke most casual viewers would understand. And for people who subscribe to death of the author, many would not even consider it canon in the first place.

Dragon Ball doesn't even have an official canon in the first place. We've been over this.TonyTheTiger wrote:And for people who subscribe to death of the author, many would not even consider it canon in the first place.
And so what? Team Four Star have dubbed the third and fourth films, both of which being arguably "non-canon", and they're still funny.

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
What does any of that have to do with what I said? All I said was that too many references to "Mark" would go over a lot of people's heads. Which it would because for most Dragon Ball fans, they only really pay attention to the material itself, not obscure comments from the author. Hence it wouldn't be funny for a lot of people. A one off joke is fine for the people who really pay attention. But to keep calling him Mark just wouldn't work because of the obscurity. "Canon" in the sense that Mark isn't part of any Dragon Ball material, period, whereas Hercule and the movies are. I used "canon" because I have no idea what the right word is with respect to these footnote brand comments that exist outside of what constitutes "Dragon Ball." It may not have an official canon but it does have an official existence. For many people, "Mark" does not exist.

Man, Mr. Satan goes by so many names. He's known as "Mr.Satan", "H-Word", and "Mark". Maybe TFS should just make a new name for him everytime he shows up. At least this way no one can complain about them not using their favorate name for the character.

The guy making up new names for himself each time with escalating badass-ness could be a really amusing running gag.

According to podcast 4, Movie 5 will be next and Coola will be played by General Ivan, not Kaiser. There is even an audio preview in the new podcast!

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
I am so enjoying these podcasts. It's interesting to hear how everyone got introduced to the series. I also got into it via weekday Toonami and only discovered it because I was flipping through the channels looking for something to watch that summer.
Oh man would a One Piece-esque "everybody gets a fight and gets to beat their respective opponent" set of battles be fun; I agree! I should not be as super-excited for this upcoming movie as I feel, but as of right now I'm so anxious for plot-info. It's killing me that Toei announces this movie and then makes everybody wait 3 or 4 months before revealing what it's about.
Aargh, I would've so enjoyed an Abridged "Episode of Bardock"; still looking forward to Cooler though. :3
Adventure Time! I think that's currently the only cartoon I'm watching the new episodes of as they come out on TV right now.
As far as I know, they haven't made a dvd set of all the Animaniacs episodes (I think they did the first 3 seasons?) ever; that would be amazing though, I loved that show as a kid.
I wanted International Channel so badly back when it was airing dbz in Japanese. Years later I first saw it in Japanese when a couple friends lent me copies of late Buu arc episodes (eps 273-275, the Goku and Vegeta's "Buu's Digestive System" adventure); my first thought upon watching was that Goku's original Japanese voice is so cute. It instantly cemented it as my favorite Goku voice.
