That may be true, but it doesn't explain the overused and unnecessary American Jokes and Idioms which are obviously not an issue of Translation and FUNI didn't got them from the Latin American Spanish version.Fionordequester wrote:No, I'm saying that FUNi's translation of the spanish translation may not have been good. Maybe not...or, maybe it does. You ever heard of Samurai Pizza Cats? The ones who dubbed that show completely rewrote the entire thing precisely because of the fact that their translations were so bad. So, if FUNI was receiving those kinds of translations, and didn't feel like hiring competent translators (which they should've done, obviously, but they didn't), it's entirely possible that they took a look at their translations, tried to get a general sense for what was being said, and then just winged it from there. Not a terribly good way of writing a script, but still better than the alternative (Garzey's Wing, I'm looking at you).successoroffate wrote:That may be true, but it doesn't explain the overused and unnecessary American Jokes and Idioms which are obviously not an issue of Translation and FUNI didn't got them from the Latin American Spanish version.
But, that's assuming that they WERE getting bad translations of the Mexican script, which we don't know for sure. If nothing else, it seems like this'd be an interesting question to ask Chris Sabat on Twitter, or on one of his panels.

Yeah, I Agree. But, I still think bad script or Good Script, they still did their own thing at the beginning.Fionordequester wrote:Maybe not...or, maybe it does. You ever heard of Samurai Pizza Cats? We're talking about the same thing: the Latin American Spanish dub was done in Mexico. My guess is that they got that footage for the dub, but didn't use their scripts.Well my bad, I meant Latin American Spanish, I should have been more clear about it.IIRC, they got the Mexican dub footage, but they weren't using the Spanish scripts to translate, but Toei's.Say, Are you implying the spanish translation wasn't "good" ?
Then again, I wonder why they didn't hire a Spanish-to-English translator. It'd have made the job a lot easier than trying to figure out what Toei's scripts actually meant.

I recall one scene in the anime where Gohan is slowly approaching Cell, with Cell having a terrified look on his face. In the original, the scene is completely silent. However, in the dub, FUNi had to take advantage of the fact that you can't see Gohan's face there and added in dialogue. Gohan says:
"What are you afraid of Cell, isn't this what you wanted? I warned you not to get me angry. You wanted to see my hidden power and now you are afraid, because you know I'm going to kill you."
Very cringe-inducing.

You know, I actually like that dialogue. I found it very cathartic.Analytic wrote:I recall one scene in the anime where Gohan is slowly approaching Cell, with Cell having a terrified look on his face. To each their own, but I don't care for lines like that, especially when the actor doesn't have the ability to make chicken salad out of chicken feathers.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.
