It makes for a good time all around and I don't have to explain parts of the series that influenced parts of the movies (like what the Kaiouken is or who Kamesen'nin is). Give me 60 minutes and you have a dead Goku and a new fan.
Instead you'll have to explain why everyone can randomly fly, why Gohan has a tail, who Piccolo is, etc.

I don't see why the beginning of the Saiyan arc is supposed to be such a good place to start for beginners.
No, I won't. Most DBZ fans I've met will be happy with the DB recap at the beginning of Kai and then skipping right into the Saiyan arc. If they're really so hardcore as to want to know the whole thing, they can read my manga.

99% of people I meet who have even the most remote interest in Dragonball are nothing like Dragonball fans on the Internet. Taking it a step further, the only commonality they have with Daizenshuu EX members are that they're intelligent people.

Meh, I'm just saying. When I was a kid I payed it no attention, and I've never heard anyone else say anything about it.

I kind of liked both the bit from the Bardock special and the DB recap. I wish we would have gotten something like that for the beginning of DBZ. For somebody like me who started with DBZ, it would have been somewhat useful.

Big Momma wrote:As far as explaining the flying goes...I don't really think that needs to be explained at all. Lot's of people fly in lots of different cartoons. It works fine just as its own "Super Power".
I'd just like to jump in here to say that I have not once, out of the dozen or so times I've introduced friends to the show, or even sat down with former casual fans, gotten through an episode without someone asking how and which characters can fly.

Tonights episode is the one I've been waiting for. With Goku's 20X Kaio-Ken Kamehameha! I actually really hope they keep the original line from the old funi dub. Where Goku says "And I don't care if you're a million times stronger then me! Mark my words, I'm not going to let them down!" That's the first time Sean really shone for me as Goku. A far cry from his awful delivery in the namek and early Freeza arcs.

Weird, it's 6PM here on the East coast when the new episodes are usually up on the nicktoons website.

Today I can't seem to get it to work yet. Weird.

But I can get the preview to work

http://nicktoons.nick.com/videos/clip/d ... ep-46.html

I'mma keep trying to get it to work.

Edit: Here it is: http://nicktoons.nick.com/videos/clip/d ... -full.html
Edit 2: Who played Kid Vegeta in this episode? I swear it sounds like Laura Bailey...

Wow, so they didn't simply have Sabat do Kid Vegeta, and chose a female voice actress. Interesting.

That Kid Vegeta sounded....just off to me...I expected something more....well Sabat to be honest. Just so used to his Vegeta that anything else seems odd, even if it is him as a kid it just sounded really weird.

Although the rest of that scene was amazing with the King and Bardock.

Original Funi 20's Kaio-Ken Kamehameha Scene > DBZKai scene IN MY OPINION.....Don't care about accuracy, Goku's lines just seemed more fitting in the original dub. This was...eh, fair at best.

Yeah, I couldn't get past it sounding more like an actual kid version of him and not like a reptile with a throat cold either.

;D

As for the rest of the episode, a lot of good mixed with one bad thing. The Kaio-Ken scene was absolutely amazing and my feelings are far opposite of Zionist. Lots of fantastic screams and heavy, true-to-the-original dialogue. We also had some more great dialogue from Freeza and amazing delivery as always. Glad the Ginyu filler was gone before you knew it and that we're almost to the Genki Dama.

Now, the bad. (WARNING: The following is my opinion.) Schemmel as King Kai... was absolutely terrible in the episode. He just KILLS the tension and drama when he speaks, and his little breakdown over Goku not standing a chance against Freeza was just miserable. A character who is supposed to be a mixture of divine and silly is reduced to nothing but silly, ridiculous, and annoying.

Other than that, though, great episode.

Sean was freakin ace in this episode, his screams during the 20 times kaio-ken was fucking phenomenal, Nozawa would be proud.

Am I the only one not bothered by kid Vegeta sounding more like a, well, kid? Seems more like a realism casting choice to me, just like adult Goku sounding like an adult. I'm kinda surprised FUNI never did this back in the old dub.

I thought the Kaiô-ken scene here was just as awful as his work in Dragon Ball Z. The only noise that came out of his mouth that didn't give me a headache was that last scream during the nightmare.

I'm beginning to dread the Super Saiyan scene.

Child Vegeta is pretty awful too.

I thought the script was good, and Chris Ayres' Freeza is still masterful, almost up to Nakao's level.

Sean Schemmel was... hm. I can feel his passion in the performance, but it seems a little off as far as sounding like Goku should. Sometimes he's just a little too gravelly.

I really liked little Vegeta. I'm pretty sure it's Laura Bailey, since it sounds like the little Trunks voice.

Overall, a pretty well done episode. And the Kaioken scene was done so much better in this dub than in Z's.

Sheesh! Debbie Downer over here. ;P

I thought he put a lot of passion and intensity into the scene, much more than the older version. I mean, his lungs sound like they're exploding there.

Schemmel may never be the perfect English Goku for me, but I can definitely say he delivered here, in my eyes.

As far as Child Vegeta goes, he sounded exactly like English Kid Trunks... which, well, is humorous.

I don't really recall how the dub handled Vegeta's afterlife speech with Goku, but good god, Kai's speech was pretty damn chilling. It's roughly around the same as the Japanese one, but I think it may be simply how it's been put into English words that gives it such...a chilling effect. Even everyone's screams as Goku imagines everyone being killed by Freeza. It's pretty damn terrifying and all done so well.

Damn, never thought I'd say that about one of Dragon Ball's dubs and not in a bad way.

I'm glad Schemmel actually spaced his Kamehameha call this time instead of rushing it at the end of Goku's quasi-Dragon Rush.

I dunno, he sounded really moany and gravelly here. Let me be clear in saying that this episode was more the final straw that broke the camel's back. Schemmel's voice has always grated on my nerves, this is just one more dime in the wishing well.
