Goku only got serious in Future Trunks arc when Black revelead how he took his body and murdered his family, so yeah pretty much by the beginning he was just there for the lolz. Just look how Goku first met with Black was just like that fanmade:

Yeah, it is. You can't just think of Goku doing something like that (forgeting senzus because he had too pee) in the middle serialization of the manga for example. It's a diservice for the mature of his character presented in the past.

The main question is the development of these characters, mate. If Super is supposed to be a continuation of Dragon Ball Z show characters having learned with their mistakes for some sense. First Goku see Trunks severely injured and hurry to brings a Senzu to him, when the latter recovered try to land a hit on him and we wonders what is about. F. Trunks tell all the story, how an enemy has arisen with Goku very likeness, killed Bulma and ruined his world after finally getting peace after many years of terror caused by the androids. After hear all that you see no empathy given from Goku to Trunks's conflict when he first time met Black. F. Trunks was wondering why the heck he wasn't using his "full" power yet just to Vegeta answer that is a "bad habit" of Goku not doing so and after that nobody gives a damn either, not even Trunks. But see, the problem with Super is not just Goku characterization is the bad writing as a whole.

While hopefully not seeming impolite (and with apologies for going off-topic for a moment), but if I was in a huge rush to a life-threatening mission, and I forgot to bring a particular weapon, would you call me stupid for doing so?

...Maybe not stupid persay; but you wouldn't have any business being on the battlefield. Forgetting something as critical as what Goku forgot would be like a soldier forgetting to bring his gun to a firefight; or arriving drunk to said firefight. It shows far too much neglect and carelesness for me to just brush off.
