that arm... it's so EPIC!!!! That alone will make me go out and buy a Blu-Ray
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
So I saw the movie finally, thought it was insanely horrible obviously, here's my quick two cents.
"Goku" was just far too out-of-character and wooden-acted for any type of miniscule entertainment, Yamcha disappointed me tons in essentially being some idiot-exaggerated version of Sabat's take from DBZ Season 3/4, and I was strongly let down by the very little Piccolo screen-time (what can I say, big James Marsters and Piccolo fan). The lack of explanations for big plot things also threw me for a loop, like Piccolo's awareness of Chatku being an "Oozaru", why Chatku wouldn't even consider wishing Gohan back to life (it's not like Gohan tells him in that afterlife segment "I'm happy where I am, don't wish me back"), and the vagueness to the "prophecy" crap while being even more convoluted and cliche than the materials it rips off.
Big weird thing for me also, seeing Chichi "going out" with the "Fuckity fuck fuck" black guy from Final Destination 3... yeah, it's something I wanna repress. (And this isn't a racial thing, I just don't like the actor or the point of his character in general; watch Final Destination 3, best part of that film is when his head is splattered in a gym) Though that's nothing compared to the ridiculous character garbage done to "Goku", don't anyone tell me this wasn't a merged copy-paste of Smallville's Clark Kent and the Spiderman films Peter Parker. I literally thought Clark at almost all his scenes with Chichi and let's not delve into how much of an "Uncle Ben" Gohan's been turned into. Surprisingly enough, my favorite character of the piece turned out to be Roshi, whom couldn't look any more different than the genuine article, but had an entertaining personality, the right touch of perv-ness, and some decent acting for the stuff he was written for.
Overall, the film could've been a lot longer than it was. I remember seeing stuff from the trailer like Piccolo destroying a city, I guess that made it to the cutting room floor sadly enough. I actually didn't mind that his "release" from his prison was offscreen, as that's how it was in the manga and anime as well when Pilaf set him free. But yeah, way too short of a "big budget movie", to the point where it felt like a direct-to-DVD project. The final fight between Chatku and Piccolo was also very under-whelming, to the point where I ask "That's it?" to both the battle and movie itself. The Clark/Doomsday battle from the Smallville Season 8 finale (which lasted all of 2 minutes where Clark didn't even land one real punch), something every Smallville viewer and their brother is being pissy about, impressed me more than what Evolution gave us for a "climax". In the end, the battle scenes and some of the special effects could've been a hell of a lot better, but I was impressed by some things here or there (surprisingly liked how the Dragonballs were done).
Almost tempted to do a fanedit, but Evolution is really beyond repair and not worth it. Won't get the DVD, won't see it if it's ever at the dollar movie, pretty much never wanna watch it again (unless I'm really really drunk and got nothing else better to do). These were my views, Conan has no more to say of Chatku and his wooden evolution. Have fun with the sequel!

The characters and their motives are mostly still there.JAPPO wrote:Yes it does.CashmanX wrote:DragonBall GT doesn't deviate from the source material.JAPPO wrote:Yay lets steal Dragonball GT too because that sucks.Usually.
And what's your point? It still sucks even if it didn't.
Dragonball evolution and it's characters bear no resemblance to the originals except in name only.
I'm sorry but Vegeta with a mustache isn't the Vegeta I know and love.CashmanX wrote:The characters and their motives are mostly still there.JAPPO wrote:Yes it does.CashmanX wrote: DragonBall GT doesn't deviate from the source material.Usually.

Anyway, even if some of the characters are mostly the same in GT, that doesn't change the fact it's a lazily made show with no plot or anything interesting. It's a boring cash-in.
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

Yeah, when Vegeta looks like John Oates, it's hard to take him seriously.JAPPO wrote:I'm sorry but Vegeta with a mustache isn't the Vegeta I know and love.CashmanX wrote:The characters and their motives are mostly still there.JAPPO wrote: Yes it does.

Good thing I like both DBE and GT and won't have to pirate either of them. Or in GT's case, didn't have to.

I think you confuse DBGT with DBE, mate. Yes, DBGT was made to eat off of the success of DB & DBZ and some choices they made with the show didn't turn out as enjoyable or 'success formula' as they might have looked on paper.JAPPO wrote:It's a boring cash-in.
On the other hand, despite some plotholes and lame parts (I personally didn't like the first 20 or so episodes about the space travelling), DBGT stays faithful to it's predecessor and is a pretty good show. It just doesn't live up to DB & DBZ, but those were two fantastic show who are, IMO pretty hard to live up to, let alone top. There are some pretty epic parts in DBGT as well though which I'd like to point out;
- Bebi Vegeta
- Uub fusing with Buu (or Majuub)
- SSJ4 Goku
- SSJ4 Vegeta
- SSJ4 Gogeta
- Omega Shenron
and last, but probably best; The last episode of DBGT (#64) was just beautiful. I think that was the perfect ending for the whole Epic Saga that the DB universe offered.
Edit: Sorry for going off-topic, but I just thought I'd point out that DBGT is lightyears better than DBE, for obvious reasons.
