Huh, I wasn't aware that this was his second voice. To this day, I have not seen the first movie in Japanese (or anything except movies 7, 8, and 9). Probably going to wait for news of a DragonBox release, or lack thereof, before I do.
His first voice was Akira Kamiya. The man best known for playing Kenshiro from Fist of The North Star, Kinniku Suguru from Kinnikuman, Ryoma Nagare from the original Getter Robo and Getter Robo G, and Kogoro Mori from Detective Conan till episode 548.

I only watch the first movie on Japanese because of Kamiya. No English Garlic Jr. voice has even come close to matching his performance!

Got my replacement Dragon Box Z 3 through the post from RightStuf today - no tape, yay! The leaflet was affixed with two blobs of the old adhesive instead, so no damage to the box. = D I feel somewhat vindicated in my decision to send it back!

Left off halfway through the Garlic Jr. filler before sending it back, so am looking forward to watching the rest of the set from tomorrow on. Would start today, but I'm out with my girlfriend straight after work. Although she's said she wants me to introduce her to Dragon Ball Z at some point, I'm pretty sure mid-way through Garlic Jr., of all arcs, isn't the best place to do it...!

Start her off with Z so at some point when you show her Z Kai there will be a more appreciation for it.

You shouldn't NOT show her the other 2/3 of the show.

Start her off with a marathon of Dragon Ball, don't ruin her by starting her out with Z. Because first off, I am sure she will probably only want to watch the english version, and if she watches the english version she will be a "Inaccurate" fan. The dub of dragon ball is pretty accurate but not sometimes but it is enough to get by so I say just start he off with that series. Trust me, the lady's love Oolong!

Start her off on the ocean dub and then jump into the Portuguese one during the Ginyu arc. This is the only true way to experience Dragon Ball.

Would do if I had Dragon Ball. Have been holding off to see if it eventually gets a Dragon Box release; it's why I'm glad I held off of buying Z for so long also...! Might be able to borrow it from a mate who's a fellow Dragon Ball fan, if nothing else. I'm pretty sure he has it.

Actually, we watch a ton of subbed anime both together and on our own, so I'm pretty sure we'll be watching in Japanese. = )

Receiving my replacement Dragon Box 1 today (my previous one had two beat up discs, and one had experienced skipping a few times - I'm awesome for only replacing it now though, obviously =/) has only wet my appetite for #3, which should come in for me...Monday? I think so. Damn you, standard shipping.

But I hadn't know about this tape issue before! Was this just something that occurred with first-run Dragon Box 3s, or is this a running trend now? I ordered mine earlier this week from RightStuf (couldn't wait for Amazon's promise of getting it in July despite the lower price), so I'm assuming it's coming from a later shipment from FUNimation. I wonder if they went back to the easy-to-remove adhesive in later shipments, or - and hopefully this is not the case - have made the tape the new standard.

All I know is I'm going to peek behind the advertisement, and if I see that it's tape, I'm just going to leave it alone. Either in time it'll come off on its own since I'm sure the tape isn't strong stuff, or at least it sort of blends with the rest of the box.

...hopefully this isn't the new standard. I'd hate it if the rest of the four also had this annoying tape.

When I sent back my DBoxZ 3 due to damage from removing the tape (which, by the way, was pretty strong tape), RightStuf informed me it was "a problem with the manufacturing of the product", and the replacement box I got through later used the usual adhesive blobs rather than tape. Hopefully this means you shouldn't have an issue with your order, since it doesn't seem like it's supposed to be the new norm - otherwise, surely, my replacement should have used the tape too. = ) So yeah, I reckon you'll be fine, no worries.

If you do somehow end up with a copy with the tape, you could always try steaming or heating it off - Hao_Kaiser said that worked fairly well earlier in the thread.

That's good news. In any case, I'll find out on Monday when it comes in for me. Until then, I suppose it's back to my long overdue finishing of Dragon Box 2.

Image noise is the random variation of brightness or color information in images produced by the sensor and circuitry of a scanner or digital camera. Image noise can also originate in film grain and in the unavoidable shot noise of an ideal photon detector. here
I don't really know what's the difference between grain and noise, can someone explain it?

After seeing many attempts at "de-graining" the Dragon Box footage, I gave it a stab (with no crappy edge-enhancement, which also ruined many of FUNimation's single DVD releases back in the day):
Grain "removed":
Image
Original:
Image

I simply used Photoshop to remove the slight color-cast, and then slightly bumped up the contrast, and slightly tinted the hue towards green.

Obviously, not as good as the Dragon Boxes, but looks about the same as the Dragon Ball Season Sets (I even zoomed in a bit for authenticity in terms of FUNimation's footage)... If the Z Season Sets had looked at least this good, then we wouldn't likely have gotten the Dragon Boxes unfortunately, but there wouldn't have been a real need for them.

As much as I dislike Faulconer's score, I do admit to watching a few episodes with it every 2 to 3 months for a little nostalgia... Though, it's very painful to do so on the earlier Season Sets, which of course, besides cropping, have tons of film damage and the colors are too bright (well, until Season Four, but even then they are still a tad brighter than necessary), and later on we get the grain, but the footage is way too dark... My Dad thought Mr. Satan's gi was black, until I pointed out that it was supposed to be brown...

If the Z sets had looked like this, then I probably most likely wouldn't have been compelled to double dip on the Dragon Boxes.

Just finished my box last night; some thoughts:

-Freeza fight was dragged out, but watching it in large chunks helps alleviate this - watching 5 or 6 episodes at a time made it pass by pretty speedily and be surprisingly enjoyable. Payoff was slightly diluted by knowing in advance that it's a bit of a cop-out, since both Freeza and Goku are eventually revealed to have survived.

-Garlic Jr. ... starts out pretty good, but by the time they were fighting in the Heavenly Realm it got very dragged out. They spread about 2 episodes' worth of plot over around 5 or 6, and pad it out with some not-too-well choreographed fighting and endless shots of Kami and Popo running. Also, was it really too much to ask for them to re-animate the shot of Kami jumping with a red background for the red areas he runs through, like they did with the running itself? Having the background change to green each time he jumped made the reuse of footage more painfully distracting than it would have been otherwise. Also, Piccolo's "you can't control me, never you mind why" made me laugh for all the wrong reasons. Surely a throwaway line of explanation could have been added?

-Kuririn's 101st Proposal - LOVED this. One of the best fillers ever. The final shot where Gohan realises Kuririn's putting it on to hide his feelings, and the shot of Kuririn crying behind the sunglasses while faking his laughter... that put a lump in my throat. Oh Kuririn, you were so close to your dream.

-Trunks... some awesome bits, especially the art and animation in the episode where he takes on Freeza. (Side note: I'd remembered the final episode of Garlic Jr. being done by this animation team, so was disappointed when I realised upon getting to that episode that it wasn't - it was nowhere near this level of quality!). Even the triangle-crap team couldn't destroy the awesome of his brief encounted with King Cold. However, until the explanations start being given, he does kinda come off as someone's Gary Stu fancharacter or something - appears out of nowhere, seems more powerful than Goku when we last saw him, takes down Freeza singlehandedly in one episode, knows all about our heroes, and he's a Super Saiyan too, why not? = P Once the explanations start, though, this feeling is largely erased.

-Driving Test... was awesome (if totally out of place at this point in the series!), bar one thing. Aren't Namekians supposed to only drink water? Silly filler writers. = P

-Finally, one side note. I forget which episode, but the scene where Goku is trying to convince Chi-chi to let Gohan train with him and Piccolo deserves special mention due to one thing: is it me, or is Goku wearing an adult-size version of his purple getup from early Dragon Ball? = D Thought that was pretty cool.

Overall, not the best selection of episodes simply due to how padded out things were - looking back, not a lot happened on this box. Having said that, though, it was overall an enjoyable watch, and I'm looking forward to the next one; I'm pretty sure, on reflection, that I missed a big chunk of episodes between the Artificial Humans arriving and the Cell Games, so it'll be interesting to see what I remember and what's new to me when that comes around. = )
