To be fair, it wasn't as prominent in GT as it is now. It was also used a lot better back then. The person who started it was probably Yamamuro (Forgive me if my info is wrong)

Nakatsuru used the white highlights fairly tastefully in GT. They were generally not bright white and actually adhered to the light source.

The current sheen is due to Yamamuro. He's the character designer for the series.

Though the bright colours are Teppei Hotta's doing. They've had the colour design credit since Battle of Gods.

I agree GT didn't spam it, and the colors/textures made it less annoying, but in the new animation it looks like they're always sweaty, greasy or been in some disgusting orgy. Pisses me off to no end. If it wasn't for that I'd hate super far FAR less.

I think Gt's was better, but I still wish it was never even there. Z almost never had it accept when trunks appeared and the bad re animation flashbacks in the buu saga at the end. and thanks for the info, I want those white highlights to die in a fire. Like why do they need to put it there?! WHY?!!! Makes me wanna bitch slap goku and say to him "clean your fucking face bro!" Like seriously, looks greasier then the squeaky voiced fry cook from the simpsons.

I hope Karasawa is handed a really important combat episode in the future with good time and resources, it would be something amazing. And have it back to back with a Tate episode.

The episodes he has handled have been some of my favorites so far and the way the action was handled in this episode sealed the deal. It made me feel like I was watching Dragon Ball again which I can't say for many of the previous episodes.
Exactly, too bad we'll have to handle with Tate's monstrosities next episode.

I really want to know who animated this.
This was my favourite part. Loved it to death!
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro
Favourite new DB Animators: Yuya Takahashi and Chikashi Kubota

So Nakatsuru is the man who created the shine effect problem and Yamamuro is the one who's continuing it to this day? Just wanna get my facts straight. Thanks.

I hope Karasawa, Toma and Otsuka are going to become series regulars, it'd be a huge help to the series to have 3 more regulars on board.

The episode I was referring to was Episode 24 which was damn ugly but the same guy did Episode 2 which was great and his other episodes seem alright.

Yamamuro has got the best drawings based on the OP images and he's only done the one episode unfortunately.
Don't get your hopes up just yet. We might get a bad animated episode soon, thats just the way it goes in toei. Several good looking episodes in a row then 1 or 2 bad looking ones, rinse and repeat.

Someone on Reddit drew a scene from Resurrection 'F' while channeling the older character designs. SO GOOD.
The ear could use some work and the colours could definitely be better, but I'm officially using this as my go-to example when I get asked what my issue is with the current ones.

The animation in the NEP looks amazing.

Wow. That is amazing. And it just makes Yamamuro look even more sub par than he already is.

That really is amazing! :D Reminds me of Yamamuro in the Cell arc before he..uh...changed.

JEEZ his left muscle armor plating (our right) is reaaaaally bugging me. Other than that it's decent.
Dragon Ball /Z/GT/Super is a children's show and there's nothing wrong with that.

Someone called "Ink8yte" on /r/DBZ, apparently.

Tried making it look like a cel, while also fixing the ear that was bugging me:

The chin looks a tad too long for my tastes (though that might just be the perspective throwing me off) but yeah, that's a massive improvement.

Tate is doing what beloved and regular animators have done since the beginning of television animation in Japan: injecting himself into his work. For that to be shamed or regarded as irregular shows greater lack of awareness about the industry that Dragon Ball is a part of.

The only problem I have with Tate is when he draws stills. I have no problem with a little bit of off-model animation in order to get fluid movement, but there isn't really an excuse when you have stills with bad art. He's shown that he can draw on model before, so the only thing I would want different is for him to stay closer to on-model when there isn't any movement. This might be the result of prioritizing action scenes and not being able to correct less important stills, but this is just me nitpicking. Other than that I love his actions scenes, especially his cuts in the Frieza vs. Goku and Goku vs. Vegeta fights.

RE: Tate
It could be me being somewhat ignorant, but I'm not entirely sure that Tate's off model shots are his fault. The episodes he worked on for One Piece were never that off model, and as demonstrated in episode 11, he can indeed draw on model when he wants to and has the means to. Given Super's production, the short amount of time that the staff gets to work on episodes, and the lack of talented help, Tate probably is going to prioritize the action scenes in episode 38. You know what though? That's fine with me. I understand why some people don't like his style, and it is 100% okay if you don't, but he's not a bad animator (not saying anyone here called him that, I just see that pop up from time to time).

I'd rather get an episode sprinkled with interesting fight sequences than get a "mostly" on model episode with maybe 15 seconds of goodness if we are lucky, and with Super we sometimes aren't. Maybe Tate will drop the ball next week, I don't know. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing what he does.
