I uploaded 1 of extra's from the blu ray Inside Dragon Ball Z: Interview with Gen Fukunaga http://youtu.be/InFQqoa-tUs.
Edit:
Here's the second extra Inside Dragon Ball Z: Interview with John Burgmeier http://youtu.be/E10HK74K6SQ. It'll be in 1080p when it finishes processing.

I was open to the idea of a behind-the-scenes look at the dub scripting... and then of course, one of the talking heads just gushes over the "ally to good" speech. :|

He actually bragged about how that wasn't in the Japanese version and he gave the english writers huge props for adding that in  I face palmed so hard.

I still don't get what's bad about that speech.

It's completely out of character. It sounds like something the Great Saiyaman would say rather than Gokū.

In isolation from Dragon Ball, I'd say it's fine. But it's more of a Superman speech, if he was feeling a bit up himself (with the whole 'I am truth', etc.). A person who has lost themselves to rage (a Super Saiyan) and is (at that point) toying with the person that they plan to kill isn't exactly the answer to all living things that cry out for peace. He's not there to protect the innocent, he's there to get revenge for the death of his friend. That's why I don't like it, at least - it kinda misses the point.

The speech also sounds really wooden and flat.
It is clear that sometime in Mark Satan's life, he acquired the dragon balls and called upon shenlong to grant him immortality.

What era of Superman are you talking about? MAYBE Superfriends era Superman, but I don't think Superman has ever made a speech that over the top and flowery.

If anything, it reminds me of Batman's ‘I am vengeance. I am the night. I am Batman!’

They should honestly redo this interview for the Buu arc of Kai and talk to J. Michael Tatum.

I'm literally 60 seconds in and I'm already mad. I'm totally gobsmacked by the sheer arrogance and nerve of some of these people.

Wholeheartedly believing their translation made the show better than the original. I mean...really?!

Nothing wrong with being proud of your work despite others' feelings but c'mon now.

EDIT: Paha, that Freeza clip just made something click in my brain and I've finally worked out who they made him sound like...

Agreed. At least Sabat was open and honest about the shortcommings of those early episodes.

What? Are Schemmel and Sabat the only ones at FUNimation who didn't like the way the Z dub was handled?

No, Sonny Strait and Kyle Hebert have been pretty open about their disagreements with DBZ's dub.

Mind you, the guy who said that at the start doesn't work for FUNimation, he's Ben from ScrewAttack.

This is true but all these people and their cutaways are put in there by someone at FUNimation. It's on their product. There's clearly some pride there.

I can see where Gen is coming from when he talks about adapting material for the states, and I even agree that going with Z first was a smart move, but the idea that DBZ needed as drastic a makeover as it got is absurd. DB is an action adventure series, and that's universal. People understand fighting, which is why Bruce Lee movies and wrestling is popular all over the world. I'm sure there are some series that don't translate across cultures, but DB isn't one of those stories.

I found it very interesting that Zero was Goku's dub name even after the Harmony Gold dub. Unless my ears deceive me, that's not Barbara Goodson, that was Saphron Henderson.
