VejituhTheWarriorGuy wrote:Yeah, this dub still isn't doing it for me. Kaiji sounded too much like your average Sabat impression and the script is still WAY too literal. I'd expect quality like this from a fan dub, not an official one, this dub is honestly pretty bad. I've tried to give it a chance and some voices like Trunks, Videl, Gohan and Bulma sound fine but when your main characters are horrifically miscast and the director for the dub directs everyone to act as flat as piece of wood, you've really screwed up. Beerus isn't ANYTHING like what his character should be in terms of the script and the voice. People will complain about the tiniest changes for lipflaps in the FUNi dub or little line changes in that dub to not make it 100% literal and sound awkward but as soon as a different dub totally changes how a character IS its fine? I'm sorry but this dub is a dud and I'm not even looking forward to Frieza because, and we've all never really thought of this, it's likely going to be a Linda Young impression rather than an Ayres one. I respect the talent involved but the execution with the dub is awful especially with that horrendous sound mixing
I think you guys are a little off the mark about this Beerus voice. Criticisms such as the one highlighted feel unreasonable to me because it seems to be rooted in a personal bias more than anything. It seems you basically think the character should sound like Jason Douglas and anything remotely different is automatically bad. That mentality is probably the reason we have as many soundalikes as we do in this dub, because they're staying within the rules set by other actors. Jason Douglas portrayal overemphasized the lazy character quirks of Beerus but he fell short in making Beerus sound commanding or imposing when needed, like Koichi Yamadera could. The Bang Zoom actor seems to be leaning more in that type of direction rather than sounding nonchalant all the time and that's fine to me. And for what it's worth this guy's voice is, in my opinion, a closer match to the original but that's not as important to me personally as I like many of the English portrayals that stray from the Japanese.

My main point is; we shouldn't be looking to the Funimation dub for "how these characters should sound" and there should always be some wiggle room for new actors coming into these roles.

Is it really necessary for you to insult the people who don't like your performance, Lex? I expected better from you.
He wasn't insulting him personally as much as he was criticising VejituhTheWarriorGuy's posts which, to be fair, is basically what he's been doing to Lex's performance. I don't think it's fair to say Lex can't critique the responses of others who've been criticising him. Although, he probably could have done it in a less abrasive way.

they really screwed up the main cast in terms of casting as they just don't sound very good especially Lex Lang as Goku. I respect the man as an actor but his Goku just isn't good, it's nowhere near a Schemmel impersonation either.
Just watch the Funimation dub. PS: you write really shitty posts. How does it feel?
I am sorry but this crosses the line. VejituhTheWarriorGuy has made informative posts about the dub and backed up his opinions he's not mindlessly hating to receive such a reply back. I'm sorry but after this I am not shying away now like others, your Goku was truly awful.

Ehh... I can agree with him on the script issues but aside from that, his posts towards this dub have been pretty disparaging and overly harsh in my opinion. Branding it "awful", essentially calling it a fandub and saying it has bad sound mixing (which... it doesn't?) isn't exactly contributing much to the discussion. He's even gone out of his way to take jabs at the censorship and all I can say to that is, it's a TV dub, what did you expect?

Comments like that flat out wouldn't be tolerated in either of the Funimation dub threads which frankly, is a bit of a double standard in my opinion.

You're not actually trying to stick up for Lex are you? People ragged on Rager and Lex's response is equally as bad. He never gave a reason as to why and just dismissed
VejituhTheWarriorGuy posts as shitty that's exactly what Rager did, you want to talk about double standards this is a prime example.

Also people haven't been holding back on their criticisms of the FUNi dub. Also we have had two episodes now I feel like it's enough to deem something awful or not, Lex may have had a point not to judge based on clips but two episodes now. Maybe fandub is a bit too harsh but it's an opinion and it does like they're trying too hard to copy FUNi.

Someone mentioned the sound mixing earlier. I actually have to agree that there's some issues with the balancing and compression. It's nothing too offensive, but it's noticeable enough that I'm glad someone else brought it up before me.

Edit: Forget it, I'm not having this conversation.

Also, I'm sincerely hoping that's not actually Lex Lang.
It is Lex. He confirmed it on Twitter that it was last time he was here.

I don't know how accurately we can judge the sound mix when we're going by pretty low grade recordings, especially on that second episode.

Except that in Rager's case, he was the one who came out bashing another dub without reason. It's not the same thing as Lex defending himself from haters online. Any hate that Rager got was his own fault, he instigated the argument himself. I've said that Lex could have been less abrasive about this and that's a fair criticism so I'm not totally on anybodies side here, I can just see where he's coming from.

What? Nobody is hating on Lex at all, simply criticising his work if one thinks his work is awful they shouldn't call it out? Hell even in that post they say they respect Lex. He told us not to judge based on clips okay that's totally fair but two episodes now, I think it's absolutely fair to start judging and his Goku quite frankly has been bad in my opinion. Does that make me a hater?

In the way VejituhTheWarriorGuy was doing? No, probably not tbh. I mean he's free to say it that way but you can't then turn around and play the victim when the man you're harshly criticising responds to you in an equally derogatory way, in that scenario you're kinda asking for it in my opinion. That being said, I will reiterate what I said before and that is that Lex could have been less abrasive. Please pay attention to that part because it means I'm criticising both of them for their behaviour, not trying to paint one person as a villain.

Trying to add some perspective to the group. You see, you can comment much more effectively by being kind. I was showing by example that name calling is useless. Sorry I haven't lived up to your expectations. We are doing the best we can. As these episodes continue, we are getting into the characters more, so hopefully your strict standards will be met as the show progresses.

Michael McConnohie's King Kai blows Schemmel's out of the water. I look forward to the fight with Freeza in this dub.

I can agree that two episodes isn't quite enough for a complete picture. Especially since both of them focus on a mostly different set of characters. I think the Blue Water dub of original Dragon Ball is a good point of comparison. That dub felt a lot like this one for the first few episodes, but really picked up soon after.

I think the fights between Goku and Beerus are what's really going to put this dub to the test. I can see what those two actors are going for, but I don't know how they'll transfer into more intense scenarios.

Hey guys... bottom line is, you have no idea what we are up against with this dub. We have been told to make it our own. We have had limited exposure to this series, and for me specifically, I have stayed away from watching the other dubs, as to not be influenced by their performances, (good or bad). We understand you have attachments to the characters as you have seen them over time, but as I said, we are doing the best we can, taking our cues from the director as far as acting beats and performance nuances. My previous abrasive post was to make a point that people are quick to throw out broad statements like "you suck" "it's awful" "terrible performances" etc. Maybe something like, "Been watching your dub, see if you can capture more of the playfulness of Goku, or Warrior, or whatever... I know you are new to this part, so if we can help as superfans, here are some ideas..." Or hang in there man, off to a slow start, but you got this!..."

I suppose most of you are between 15-25 years old on these posts, so I don't expect much evolved thinking from this thread, but as human beings, perhaps there is a shred of compassion in you that you can show along the way. I'm happy to be doing this part, and I'm always striving to make it a performance that entertains and stays true to the characters. Sorry if the pitch or performances are not what you have been used to with the Funimation and other actors of the past. We will continue to strive to make it a great show. But like I said in another post, if you live outside of southeast Asia, just watch the Funimation version and you will be delighted! In Asia they love this dub so far! Anyway, peace to you all, and have a great day!

To say your work is "awful"... yes, that is a hater. Or at least an example of no "tact". There are more constructive/compassionate ways to express your dissatisfaction with the show/performances. Good luck!

Watched the episode and while I was very impressed with the first one, this left a lot to be desired. Tang just doing a Sabat impression is what really turns me off. I was very excited when I saw his casting, because I am tired of Sabat's voice and was ready to embrace something new. Sadly, what I feel this dub suffers from, at least for now, is similar to early Funimation, when the Ocean cast got replaced: The voices have to still be similar to what came before, in order to be consistent. Change is hard and I can't really put it against the actors because I don't think anyone who values his work would just copy someone else outright. The performances are good, so that's a plus and if this does get to point where the actors are left to do their own thing it will only get better. Also, comparing the actors who don't try to sound like the Funi cast to those, especially Lex Lang to Schemmel, isn't true criticisim. They only got to play these characters recently, so understanding them will take time, unlike the Funi ones who are in their skin for decades now.
I will continue to check this out and still hold out hope things get better and many of the voices and the prformances already are good, so it's not like it will be a pain to do so. The potential for greatness is there, just needs more time and freedom to be able to really make it it's own thing, rather than Funimation-light.

So you expect blind praise after throwing a temper tantrum on a random forum? Lex, aren't you a grown ass man? Because you're proving otherwise.

LexVO, please stay on the forums. I think it's awesome to have you around. And SuperFumeiJin, aren't you ashamed of posting a message like this to someone?

Anyway, LexVO, I'm not a voice actor, but I just think the voice itself isn't fitting for Goku. Like one of my voice acting friends put it: "His acting is fine but the voice itself isn't exactly "my Goku". This is a quote I have to agree with.

And as far as your Vegeta - are you sure he hasn't listened to Chris Sabat? Because it really sounds like it.
