Well not everything that's talked about here is as small as this. Really IMO is it even worth mentioning? Ok it doesn't matter if you mention. But why the 'silly' part with it. I mean why does that make it silly? And I said that was just opinion. I'm sure I didn't offend anyone (Right? ).VegettoEX wrote:If we don't talk about these kinds of things, there's nothing left to talk about. He's not saying you offended anyone, if anything, that was a joke. But he is right. There is little left to talk about as far as the story goes. Therefore, all thats left is small things. Either talk about small things or stop thinking, talking, posting on forums about, or watching Dragon Ball, and that's not going to happen any time soon for me at least.shotkeeper wrote:Well not everything that's talked about here is as small as this. I generally think its because FUNi has different brand managers for each of the DragonBall series. In that context, it kinda makes sense. Also with the whole widescreen fiasco with DBZ sets, I'm glad DBGT is 4:3 like its suppose to be. It's also a pretty good indicator that the Dragon Ball season sets will likely be the same whenever they get around to those.Vegard Aune wrote:Am I the only one who thinks it's silly that the menu in the DBZ-sets was 4:3 whereas the video was 16:9, whereas this DVD seems to be the exact opposite, with a widescreen menu and 4:3-video?

Sorry for the delay. Here are three screens from the Dragon Box for comparison with a few screens posted earlier. I didn't do the latest bunch because they're in JPG and look...well, bad due to compression. I ripped these directly from the first DVD, and resized them with VirtualDubMod (656x480, using the Lanczos3 filter mode).

Judging by the looks of it, some detail loss is evident from the blurring and the season set looks like it has slightly zoomed footage, as seen from the fact that you can see more on the bottom and the left and right sides of the Dragon Box footage.
While there's quite a bit of grain in the Dragon Box footage at times, it's not noticeable on a TV and the footage is definitely sharper than the blurred season set.
Though on the upside, the colors look about dead on so far. So it doesn't look like they fiddled with the saturation this time around.

Agreed, colors do look about as close to perfect as one could ask for. The blurring is quite annoying, but it really only looks as bad as it does when placed side-by-side to the superior version. I'm already getting gift cards early, so I might go ahead and scoop this up for myself soon.

To be fair, the quality in DAN DAN varies, as the Dragon Box has about four versions of varying quality. About two of them look quite bad (as in VHS quality).Undercooked Sausage wrote:I picked this up and jesus christ, Dan Dan looks HORRIBLE.

Granted, I got these for the audio, but damn they're blurry... It just felt sub par watching it on my computer monitor. I will bring in the big guns and pop it into the Sony Bravia via PS3 tonight and give that a shot, but my impression was that it was sub par when compared to the singles.
The video quality for the openings, specially Dan Dan animation 2, is atrocious, like We Gotta Power and We Were Angels in Season 7. I'll still enjoy it but they could've done better. It's kind of sad when non-remastered has more detail and sharpness than the new product...

Damn FUNimation is un-predictable, but they sure did do this right. I certainly don't have any reason to re-buy Z, but GT might be another story, even with all of the cash I've cranked out to get the singles (still missing a few.
The fact that they've gone full screen is very nice to see, and I was SO pleased and surprised to hear the English version of "Hold my hand" by Vic Mignogna!. This new set is very tempting with all of that horrible "step into the grand tour" stuff and all of the tunes that go along with it removed.
I'm impressed and I might buy GT in this format, but then again it would be much more logical to wait until it's (probably) eventual release on blu-ray. Oh and I'm definitely all over the Dragon Ball sets if they're full screen.

Y'know, my eyesight's really good, but I still I have to lean in real close and look real hard to even notice this "blurriness" you guys are talking about. "Really blurry" is Z Season One; these look fine to me, and the only thing the FUNi remaster seems to be missing is the grain.
What I'd like to see is some clips... Both to check out the raw footage in motion, as well as to hear how well the dub works with the Japanese BGM.

Do you have an LCD screen? I do and the blurriness is clear as day.SSj Kaboom wrote:Y'know, my eyesight's really good, but I still I have to lean in real close and look real hard to even notice this "blurriness" you guys are talking about. Yeah, I do. Maybe it's just me, I dunno. At least I know it won't bother me either way.Innagadadavida wrote:Do you have an LCD screen? I do and the blurriness is clear as day.

I went ahead and picked this up with a giftcard that I got early today. With the $20 taken off, I only had to pay $11 for this thing.
For anyone curious, the eyecatcher audio-cutting incident only occurs in episodes 1-3. I only checked the Japanese audio, since I'm sure that's the one everybody cares for most, but I see no reason why it wouldn't match up in the dub. For anyone who considers this audio issue a problem, take into consideration that it only happens in these episodes and not all of them.
For those of you who had the original single for episodes 1-3, are you guys sure the audio wasn't already like that in the original version? I'm finding it hard to believe this is a FUNi problem, and even then, I find it hard to believe it was just for these sets.
And yes, the Parapara Brothers still rap in the dub. To be honest, though, it doesn't sound out of place, even when placed with the original music. It's still annoying, but at least it matches.
As far as video quality, the episodes indeed look quite nice, though it's obviously not a progressive transfer, which I suspect was due to the masters provided. The only things that really stuck out as "bad" were ending two, where quality jumps all over the place, and the new animation in opening two, which is about the worst looking thing on the set. Other than those, though, picture's quite nice.
Oh, and I found a new problem for those of you who are still on the fence. As I'm sure you all know, the Japanese episodes themselves were mixed in mono, but the Japanese openings and endings were treated to stereo mixes. This is how they are on both the DragonBoxes and the old FUNimation discs. Quality control seems to have forgotten this little detail, and have transferred all of the audio to the discs in mono. So yeah, the stereo Japanese openings and endings are in mono now. It still sounds great, but the lack of channel separation is a disappointment.

Is the new dub track 5.1? That would be very nice considering my sound setup.
