Now this is an optimistic development. Viz seems to be slowly working towards a better, and more faithful Dragon Ball... After more than 10 years. Shame that it had to be on a release of such poor quality. Hopefully, we'll see similar improvements in subsequent releases... Not counting on seeing any we haven't already seen so far in the Full Color Comics, since it's already in the works, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a domestic Kanzenban... unlikely as that is to actually happen. Hell, the "Perfect Edition" aspect is a... well, perfect subtitle to promote the extra dose of faithfulness that I hope to see in this hypothetical print. With the way FUNimation is releasing DB anime products one after the other, I wouldn't be surprised if Viz did the same with the Manga.

I'm not sure about how meaningful all this talk of a better Dragon Ball release from Viz is. Let's face it, even if they make strides towards a better release, how likely is it that these strides will be successful? Most casual Dragon Ball fans that I know (I imagine that their consumer base isn't full of DB nerds like myself) aren't even particularly concerned about something as big as a new movie. I just recently had to explain that there is a new DBZ movie to my friend, who grew up on the show and enjoyed it just as much as I did.

And beyond just growing out of the series or leaving it behind for a while, quality doesn't seem to matter to a lot of fans. Even the DBZ subreddit users don't seem to care about quality, as the orange bricks are hugely popular with them. I seriously can't imagine that there is a sizable market of quality oriented fans willing to spend money for something like a domestic Kanzenban. Most people are probably perfectly content with their white volumes.

When this panel was edited, the letters over the magazines were changed, and the message Toriyama left was changed to something like, "Hello there!". The paper quality isn't as bad as some people have stated. I can see some of the previous pages through the other side, but it doesn't ruin the reading experience for me. I'm pleased with this release and looking forward to the next volume.
So does the dialogue change from the VizBigs? I can live without nudity and the gore is the same in both releases. The VizBig paper quality is also way better. So that really only leaves the wording.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

KentalSSJ6 wrote:We can only hope that Viz will come to their senses and release the print editions unedited, uncensored, and re-translated. It really doesent make sense why this is done with just DBZ. Rurouni Kenshin is licensed under VIZ and that came out completely uncensored. Middle fingers, language, and all the violence all kept in. Shonen Jump releases all their content uncensored and some of the stuff in Bleach and Naruto put DBZ to shame in the violence department.

I get they are trying to be "sensitive" for parents and their kids, but you know what? Let the parents do their damn job by being parents. Its not Viz's job to make sure everything is safe for kids. Id parents dont want their kids to read it, its THEIR responsibility as parents to keep their kids from reading it, not letting a company butcher the original work till its "safe". If Viz is that worried, they can just shrink wrap every volume like Dark Horse does with its volumes of Berserk.
Yeah, really, I really think that someone, who pass his responsibility on others has no right to be a parent. With all this hypocrisy and shit going on, it's on each and individual parent to decide what is good for his kid or not.
Because I'm in a train with Dennis Leary and I really don't give a fuckin' damn about your little asshole there sir, I want my comic with unedited art, being it breats, nudity, racial stereotypes and if you don't, go yourself reading holy bible for kids edition with colourfull pictures of tormented humans, but leave the stuff ''made for me'' unedited, so I can really enjoy it.
I really don't care about seeing Bulma's breasts, but I think about censorship as this huge spill on democracy, as they decided for themselves what is good for you.
I would understand controversy about Popo, if he was some street hobo with cigar and trumpet, talking in ''black-mockery'' slang. I saw tons of black stereotypes in US shows since I was a kid, but from the first time I saw Dragon Ball, Popo never struck to me as a black guy, but rather as a Jin with all the turkish-like clothes and same with Majin Buu, Kaioshin and others. I noticed that heroes from Earth are more Asian-Western-like in style and everything and deities are mostly Orient.

Do kids in America have censored penis? I don't know really.... But from my experience, people who have these problems and whining, have usually some nasty issues about them, or are dumb as hell, because normal mature human being can deal with it or simply doesn't care. Like that guy who was offended because of baptization in new Bioshock, as he was ortodox christian, but well, he wasn't offended by actually killing people in the game.... WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT GUY?! And many others in this kind of sense.

Censorship is a huge issue in the US when it comes to manga, anime, and all that. It also doesent help when kids these days are too steps from braindead. It reminds me of a comment I posted on youtube regarding Young Justice being cancelled.

What the comment I replied to said -

"Another good show cancelled. Why do these shows average only 2 seasons(wolverine and the x-men, spiderman, avengers now this"

To which I replied with -

"Because kids these days are two steps away from brain dead and cant keep up with a show that actually has a story. They can only handle shows with stupid fart jokes and random slapstick comedy. Why do you think we lost Young Justice and kept Regular Show? That and ignorant uninformed parents want to "protect" their kids from content such as making out and fights. Yeah, as if they are never gonna experience that when they enter middle school..but put it on tv and its suddenly "bad" for kids."

To sum up, increasingly stupider generations in both kids and adults are more or less the reason everything foreign gets censored, edited, or altered when released here.

I can think of plenty of DC comics where things can get pretty nasty. Joker's face being cut off, a scene where one of Oracle's friend's head explodes, I dont see any censored or altered version of those comics around.

Though I will give kudos to the Hub Network. They have shown Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Batman Beyond, and Batman Beyond Return of The Joker uncensored and unedited for the most part.

I'm not sure of this has been covered yet but in a recent viz podcast they said these new 3 in 1s would not be using the new ending. I think it was the Sept 9th podcast.

I don't see why they would, considering the only element from the kanzenban in this release is the cover art.

I originally hoped they'd get that new ending and toss it in as a bonus to the VizBigs at least, but since they didn't there, I never expected them to for this newer cheaper re-release either. Still a bit of a disappointment to people that want that brought over at last though, even if it is just a few pages.

Given that Full Color Dragon Ball seems to be using the Kanzenban version for it, you'll probably get it there.

...Didn't think of that. And if I recall, we are definitely getting print versions of that here too right? Hmm...I can't say I'm interested in the full color version as a whole (I'm probably just picking up the rest of the VizBigs at some point and calling it quits), but I could easily see myself getting just the last one to have the ending. Heck, that's what I did with Rurouni Kenshin, since there's a Watsuki one-shot in the last single that isn't in the VizBigs (a non-Kenshin one-shot, so it's understandable why it was excluded).

Not only are we getting it in volume form, but exclusive to Viz's version, it's being printed at an American Graphic Novel size (which tend to be 33% or so bigger than a normal tankobon in height). I wonder if it does well, will we eventually get the whole series in Full Color in release form here...

But yeah, I like that these volumes are now getting more uncensored, I just wish they were of a higher quality...

Since the Full Color version are being released on 2/14, we may have a chance for an uncut release.
I'd hold off buying the manga since the digital color manga is already available in Japan and it's been announced that they're coming to the US but it's known if it's just Z and not DB as well.

I apologize if this is considered necro-posting. This thread hasn't really been "replaced" since the last post, and I don't feel like this post of mine really warrants a brand new thread. So again, I apologize if it's been too long.

So, I noticed this in my local bookstore today. It isn't really supposed to hit store shelves until December 3rd.

Image

Since this volume contains one of the more popular artwork edits in the series (Bulma's added bra in volume 09), I flipped through it to see if Viz left this volume uncensored as well. And wouldn't you know it, I flipped to Yamcha's fight with Suke-san and Bulma's breasts were staring me right in the face! I'm afraid I couldn't take a photo or anything, but rest assured, her digital bra is gone. I couldn't remember if any other visual edits plagued volumes 07-09, so that's the only thing I checked, but it's definitely a good sign.

So if anyone wanted confirmation, this volume appears to be free of artwork edits as well (aside from the African American lips and the sound effects, I suppose).

Good to know! Seems like Viz is keeping their word! Hopefully they'll re-print 1 and 2 uncut as well :D Been debating on if I should get the Japanese fist print releases, but now sure now. I like these 3-in-1's even if they arnt perfect, paper quality wise.

Nice to know they're sticking with keeping them uncut, but with all the problems they've been having I think I'd really rather just import the rest of the Japanese kanzenban then maybe buy the final tankobon too.

If the african american lips are altered, then its not uncut at all.

After the complaints Viz got back in the day, they're never going back on this for any series again.

Then the uncut designation is a flat-out lie. It only makes sense if there's nothing cut or altered whatsoever. The previous releases already have very little censorship and recent Tankobons editions even had Bulma's breasts uncensored, including during the fight with the invisible man.

Apparently, MagicBox has seen it and from what I could tell he stated that that is censored.
