In a level of irony, anime characters before Goku weren't allowed to grow up, and it was Toriyama threatening to stop that made the editors let him age him up. So now these days anime characters getting older is the norm, and it's Pokemon and Ash that are the weirdos for not moving on.
The sad part is, The Pokemon anime is the only continuity that don't age their character, meanwhile the other version of red actually ages
