PoF's drawing style is far from Toriyama's, but is perfect for the humor of this chapter.

The releasing rhythm will be 4 pages per week (new day: Monday). It'll be back at 3 after that.

This sounds like U16 to me, but I read the fanfic(google translated) and I didn't find it funny at all! only the part where Vegetto almost dies of hunger. But whatever it is only 24 pages anyways so a little more than a month before this special ends I can handle that.

All of you should really stop complaining about the "crappy" translation. Why?! Because you ruin the mood and focus on translation differences and act like they've hired a FUNimation writer who inserts jokes everywhere instead of doing an accurate translation instead or a noob who uses online translation sites.

Translation is not 100% literal to original. So what? At least you get the point intended! Like when Yamcha was saying "give me your trust" to #18 and you bitch about it saying it should be "Please trust me. I'm on your side, here."?! Does it matter that much?! You still get what he wants to say! He's still asking her to trust him.

I mean, Geez!! If you REALLY are like that, take these two simple suggestions:

Picking at the translation doesn't me we are enjoying the comic any less. It's not that the translations are poorly done, either. I could understand if this were just Salagir translating it himself, and there being errors...but if he's actually gonna take the time to "hire" people to do it, then he should at least get someone who's good at it...especially since some of those people have offered to do it.


Does it hinder my enjoyment? Of cousre not. Just because I'm picking at the translation doesn't mean I don't appreciate all the hard work Salagir has put into this...in his free time, nonetheless. Less-than-perfect translations are but a blip on the radar. It's just hard to imagine him turning down offers of a better translator, though.

Currently we are getting one special every even chapter (8, 10, 12 and now 14). Salagir also already stated there is other special being wrote already. So, yeah, U19 will come someday, don't worry. Also, U9 is cooler, but U16 is more important, story wise. We would need that special soon or latter.

About the fanfics. I am pretty sure everything in there are 'DBM canon'. The dissonance between the mood of the fanfic and the special is probably just style choice. U16 don't is 'bound' to one kind of mood, like U2 (humor) and U12/14(drama). You can have many kind of stories being told in there. The fanfic choose focus in the romance and drama (I suppose? Haven't read yet), while the new special is focused in humor. That is fine, as long as both explain what is needed to be explained (where is Uub, if Mr. Buu is alive, why they have the Senzu and the U18 don't, why their Pan is a SSJ...).

That being said, I don't believe this will be the only special from them. Bra's back story don't seem to be 'funny' in any way, so telling it in a humor story will be messed up. I am betting this special will be more 'general' to the U16, while we will have a future one focused on Bra. That would make sense, since she is an important OC, a great focus on the background will make her more believable (and make more people accuse her to be a Mary Sue, but whatever).

Btw, here the first chapter of the U16 fanfic in English. Just the first chapter is translated, though, and the translator is not translating anymore.

You can also find the first chapter of Twin Pain (U12 and 14) in English, too bad it is short (like every chapter of this fanfic). I don't know what is happening in this translation, but it don't seem to be being worked anymore. That fanfic is very awesome, though, even using a shitty on line translation. There is no 'new information', however, just the the events that killed every major character except Gohan in these universe. Yau don't even get much of #17 and #18 thoughts. The sequel, One Way, may be different, though (I am still reading that one).

PS: Half the reason for reason the fanfics and the novelization should be the pretty images. Pretty much every chapter have some and there is some realty beautiful stuff in there. Case in point: Pan's fight with Bojack (url Google translated). Twin Pain also have some artwork from this PoT guy, if you are interested, specially in latter chapters.

Have I been that much official sounding? ^^; I am just a random guy. No inside information or anything, sorry if I was misleading. It is pure speculation based in what I've read so far. I know The U16 fic is canon because Salagir said so in it introduction. Likewise, I know the status of it translation the same way. I also read a bunch of comments in this fics so I know Salagir read this fics before they go on-line to be sure it is in tune with DBM. I also know that Salagir wrote a few scenes for both the novelization and the U16 fic (like the lunch time conversion of U16 in the novelization).

Anyway, I don't know any more then what you could know. I said I believe there will be 2 specials for U16 but, while it is not 'baseless' (I have my reasons to think that), it is not 'official' at any level. As far we all know, chapter 14 can be the single on about U16 back story.

But, yeah, PoF is the guy from that last image. You can know the author of the images in the fanfiction section be hovering the mouse over the pic.

Oh okay your post just made it seem like you had some connection to the project, but anyways I think it will be weird to read about U16, because the only real story in that universe is Vegetto's problem with choosing either Bulma or Chichi as his wife and his starvation issue.
I could be wrong though, they might have included some humorous stuff, which is okay with me since it's great with pleasant surprises.

I am assuming you say that because you have already read the fic? Well, I haven't so I don't know what happen in the fic, but I don't think the special is based in it. It may sound paradoxical, but it is more or less the opposite, actually. Salagir wrote a scenario and guidelines and gave it to Syl (the fic writer), who developed the way she wanted (under Salagir supervision). Now, Salagir, the original scenario author, is the one writing and he is doing the way he wants to (together with PoF, I suppose). Not an adaption from Syl's fic, just his idea to tell the same story.

You say the fic is focused in only two points (Bulma or Chichi issue and stravation problem) but that is hardly the only things to be told in there. As I said, we need explanation for Uub. We have the different dynamics of Son-Brief family and how this made Pan stronger. We have Bra's back story, which includes her poor control of her stupidly huge power (she may be able to destroy the Earth by accident). You also forget that a comic usually tell things slower then a full text. Just the two points you mentioned could take way more then on chapter (it depends of the writer).

More importantly, you seem to forget that having a fic about U16 don't mean it information is accessible to everyone who reads the fic. For start, it is petty much impossible for a non French reader to even know about the fic by 'official means'. One would have to read the (over 3000) comments to know that the French page is different. Not everyone will do that. Then, not everyone will want to rely in a poor on-line translation. And then you have the casual people who are not whiling to read a fan fic of a webcomic to be able to understand the story. Even if it is just to tell about Vegetto's starvation problems (remembering that this alone can take several pages depending of how the writer writes), we need that special for who don't read the fic ('cause is relevant for the main story.)

I agree. I might have generalized it a bit, when I wrote my thoughts on the fic. AFAIK the fic hasn't even gone past Vegetto's starvation problem meaning neither Bra nor Pan have been introduced yet, so yeah as I said before it will be nice with some pleasant surprises about this chapter.

I'd disagree about them not being necessarily true (at least, for the ones that Salagir hosts on the DBM site), but it's true that we probably won't see every little detail. It's background info to specific universe, but not relevent to DBM, so we likely won't get everything. However, it's still all true until Salagir decides to retcon or personally contradict something.

The problem is that Salagir has numerous translators now and not just one (unless something's changed), so it wouldn't make sense for him to take on more (it's also the reason why the odd page gets fantastically translated). However, since his English isn't fantastic, he has no way of finding out one is worse than another until there's an explosion of feedback complaints. I seriously can't blame him; he has no choice but to take people's word on their credibility because he himself isn't capable of the translations. I personally can't think of a better recommendation around that at all, either.

As for people commenting on why he's turned me down, please note that I haven't exactly been hounding him, either. When I found out he wasn't accepting new translators because he had a whole team, I never bothered to contact him. Less work for me.
So I doubt he even knows I've been doing side translations unless he's still checking out this thread; I never post on the site's boards.

I don't really care either way; I just do the translations for the sake of discussion in this thread and not because I'm dying to be a translator. When I give translation notes on changes that don't matter or work fine as is, it's just tossing in my opinion or coming to the defense of whoever translated something where the original was reaaally awkward or used an expression that gets lost in translation. My only real bitchings are when people make changes that should be left as is (ex: the French "Stop" is the English word being used in French, so it doesn't make sense to translate it as anything other than "Stop", even if a viable synonym got used; sound effects and grunts that sound the same).

I think it's pretty straightforward, what happens in that universe

So was U20 and U12. But we still got specials. Even though we already knew what happened after trunks beat the androids. He finds 16. Yeah. We know. We were told that 200 pages ago. grr...and They beat Broly in every other universe but not this one. That's all we needed from U20. And besides this isnt gonna be "This happened, then this happened" but more like small vignettes of random funny scenes with Vegetto and his family. Not necessarily a history of those 20 years. Plus I'm interested in what triggered Bra and Pan's transformations. and what happened with Chichi and Bulma in regards to Vegetto.

You make it sound like she can't control it cos she's so incompetent. Yeah right. Vegetto forbade her from using it, preventing any chance she had of mastering it. Is it really so unbelievable that Bra can match her father after 12 years of nothing but training? When Gohan barely trained at all and STILL surpassed SSJ3?
