So it's not the cropped version. That's good (For some might not), but I'm satisfied with my Dragon Box. I don't need to buy the same show just because it's Blu-Ray. Especially if it's a long one.

In my opinion, DBZ does not need to be in HD to fully enjoy it. It's not a new show made in digital ways where you can notice a huge difference in quality between SD and HD.

But, to be fair, I'll make a condition.

If there won't be any macroblocks here, then I'll acknowledge the Blu-Ray version got something better.

I'm sorry, but... no. No, it's not. At all.

It is an incredibly reasonable price for 17 high-def episodes on Blu-ray.

You obviously didn't buy DBZ when it was 20-25 dollars for 3 episodes.

 ! Yeeeah, that must've sucked. But yeah, especially considering Kai's sets are under $20 I'm not surprised.

You think?

Still, DBZ has like 280 episodes, so... thats like 17 sets, each for 25...

425$

My question though was what parts in the image I edited had destroyed line work and detail. Though now that i'm looking at it, it seems me doing the cartoon effect did more harm than good. Still, that has little to do with grain so much as fixing broken lines. So, did mine look smeared together too much for you?
With yours, you can see all the blurred and smeared grain in the sky. The lines in the shadows are no longer as smooth, especially in the shadow of Piccolo's cape. It looked sort of like there was Vaseline smeared everywhere.

Kai looks very soft, no matter if it's in motion or not. This is the tradeoff of them getting rid of so much grain. It looks fine, but in my position I definitely would've left the grain if it meant sharper details. They probably wanted it to look as digital as possible though, so I can understand this approach being the one they chose since it was the least destructive without leaving much in the way of traces of grain.

Take a look at this: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screensho ... position=9 See how soft it is?

The thing that gets me about Kai is they didn't bother to do much in the way of jitter cleanup, so despite all the filters they pasted it through there's a bunch of places early on where the picture wobbles.
I really don't see any smearing in piccolo's cape, I purposely smeared the clouds a bit to make the edges seem smoother and more transparent.

(EDIT: Oh wow, I REALLY screwed up on that big cloud at the top. That's my bad, I must have smeared up and down, not along the shading and highlights. I could have done a LOT better. The cloud to goku's upper right is more in line with what I intended for the rest of them to look.)

Whatever, it's all personal preference :)

Though I do like your edit, a lot in fact. I still think you could make goku's cheek and arm outline better and more solid though, and it could use a TAD bit of more smoothing, but not as much as mine. I'd go ahead and edit it again, but I don't have time.

But we can agree that both of ours were better than the orange bricks, right?

Yes, I do think it's reasonable. What planet are some of you people living on where $25 for a good chunk of episodes* on Blu-ray is expensive? I mean, I can understand if you're some punk kid with absolutely no money of your own, but when you put it in perspective with other releases, it's not significantly different.

The Walking Dead first season Blu-ray set is $49.99 MSRP for six episodes (granted, the episodes are an hour long, and I think the first episode was even longer), and you can get it for $25 -- huh, interestingly enough, around the same price as DBZ for a similar amount of run-time content.

Make comparisons with other shows, new and old alike. American or otherwise. Compare their prices and run-times with DBZ. Now go and look at other anime, particularly ones FUNimation aren't responsible for putting out. Come back when you see which company has the most progressive and generous pricing structures.

I come from 2-episode dub-only VHS days. Get off my goddamn lawn, kids.

(*Yes, you have to take into consideration how many times you may have already purchased the same content on prior formats, but let's just toss that out the window for now.)

Hey, I remember the two episode sets also!

Don't assume I wasn't around when you had to go to like 5 different stores across town just to find the next two episodes!

I still think I have some of em lieing around somewhere....

I agree that on a per episode basis, 25$ is a good price for 17 blue ray episodes, but compared as the whole series.

IDW. I may have to hold out until they release it as a boxed set our something.

Wow, people really have been spoiled by these Season sets and Dragon Boxes. *gets out cane* Back in mah day I used to shell out $25 for 3 episodes and box sets used to cost 100 goddamn dollars.

I see what you mean and MSRP for 35 Dollars is reasonable compared to, If you buy other anime I guess I just purchased about 3 copies of some episodes now. Not sure if I want to buy another 15-16 boxsets to just watch than in HD when I can watch my Dragon Box releases I admit my orange bricks I wouldn't want to watch.

PS yh I have most of the 3 episode dvds and I suppose I was over reacting and I apologize I should have thought before bringing it up now I think about it spiliting it up into more sets will allow people to buy easier.

I think the price is very reasonable, and it makes sense. There's nothing wrong with the price at all. You're getting more episodes per disc than Kai, and in some circles, Kai is the same price, if not more.

My problem with it all is how long it would take to release the whole damn thing with only 17 episodes per disc and their typical "3 months apart minimum" releases.

When I get money I'll preorder this. If I like it, I'll buy the rest.

I say the price for the Blu-ray is extremely reasonable. In fact, since its such a great price, I might get the first part. However, I wonder if Walmart is going to be release Parts 1 and 2 in a single set like they did with Kai so I can get 34 episodes right off the bat.

Yea... I was about to do the typical "back in my day" post. But, it looks like you guys have that covered.

But yea, a price range of around $25.00 is totally fair. FUNimation has charged much more than that on a home release in the late 90's early 2000's with even less material. And that was on DVD and VHS.

The only way I would say this wouldn't be worth $25.00 - $30.00 is if the transfer looks like shit. But from what I've seen and heard... I don't think that's gonna be the case. But, I guess we'll see.

In Australia, those sets of 3-4 episode sets for $30 for anime DVDs were used until about two years ago, and the Dragon Ball Kai Blu-Rays still cost around $50 at the cheapest, so I have no complaints about Funi's pricing other than the fact that I didn't start using Amazon years ago.
