Since I am a Yamucha fan and a DBZ Abridged fan, I guess I have to weigh in on the Great Yamucha Debate of 2014! :D

I for one am finding this current version of Yamucha quite entertaining. I like the guy and feels he gets shafted much more than his fair share, both by the story and even more by fans of the story, but even I have to admit there is a lot to be mined for comedic potential. It's a parody, and all of the characters get the piss taken out of them. It's part of the fun!

Interestingly, though, I've been of the mind that Yamucha's portrayal in this series has been somewhat inconsistent or, perhaps a better way of putting it, took time to find just what direction they wanted to go with him. Perhaps I've always interpreted it wrong, but at the beginning of the series, it seemed to me like they were trying to subvert or make the characters oblivious the typical Yamucha fan reaction. Like when Yamucha arrives to the Saiyan fight. Everyone's excited to see him, act like he's going to save the day. He gives an inspirational speech. And then he dies. And it's like, "Hmm, didn't see that one coming." And I remember just busting a gut the first time I saw that. And that seems to be an extension of the pre-TFS dubs with their, "Whoah, you know Yamucha?!" jokes.

Later on, he seemed to have developed into a completely oblivious surfer moron with the "wax off" jokes, "What about Yamucha?" and the like.

It seems only lately, with his VA change, that he's evolved into this current version, which I also really like. He seems really down to earth, fully aware of himself and his place in the universe, but, sadly, that place isn't terribly good for a guy like him.

So, yeah, I'd say it's a bit inconsistent but all have been interesting and funny. And it's not like the real story is any less consistent with him. He's always been at the mercy of what the plot needs him to be. Sometimes he lives for fighting. Other times he can't be bothered. Sometimes he's level-headed. But when the plot needs him to be arrogant, suddenly he's arrogant. He's shy around women and is usually the voice of reason around his boy-hungry, domineering girlfriend. But when the plot needs him to be, suddenly he's labeled a womanizer out of nowhere.

Legitimately, his older character interpretation came from a bit of inconsistency in how we wanted to initially write some of the characters and influence by certain actors and members of the team who had a bit of influence on them. The project is so very far from perfect and it started of particularly rocky, but ultimately we've been trying our best to write the characters more consistently since the end of the Saiyan saga. The change in actor really did help us as well, though I won't discuss why necessarily.

KaiserNeko wrote:Fair point, changed. A lot of that crap was added by the dub, for the most part. It's been so many years since I gave most of the series a watch in Japanese, so it can be a bit hard to remember the smaller points.
Fair enough.
KaiserNeko wrote: Oolong remains a perv, Vegeta remains a dick; I'm not implying he's a BAD guy, but I am implying he could still have traces of his seedier tendencies.
Thievery, I suppose so, its never confirmed or denied in the series.

Now I'm wondering if Krillin's bullying will ever be revisited? Its hard to imagine him doing that as an adult.

KaiserNeko wrote: Also: As far as him ever winning a fight goes, he defeats a hungry Son Goku, which was Son's kryptonite at that stage of the story.
Goku gets beaten very little in DB, even Tenshinhan's win over him was mostly due to luck as it was mentioned he was more beaten then Goku despite the latter landing on the ground first.

Yamcha was also the first foe to fight on basically even ground with Goku, in the next storyline Krillin was even instantly defeated by Goku.

KaiserNeko wrote: The rabbit gang is sort of a comedy troupe, so it's really difficult for me to count them as plausible threats of any kind.
If a DB Villain, isn't Tao, Black, King Piccolo and his offspring, chances are very high they're comedy villains.
KaiserNeko wrote: Oozaru I suppose I can give you, if you call that a fight, though I'd refer to it more as a disaster/action scene considering it's not the traditional 1v1 fight against an opponent we usually see.
a lot of fights in DB weren't the traditional 1v1 fights. Like Upa and Puar vs the Vampire or Krillin beating bacterian due to his lack of a drawn nose.
KaiserNeko wrote: That doesn't make his victory all that much more legitimate, it just makes THEIR victories LESS legitimate.
How so, almost all of Baba's fighter cheated in some way. Yamcha had a better showing then Krillin there.

Using tricks was kinda common in the fights of Dragon ball as the series was half comedy, such as Krillin beating Chiaotzu by creating an opening by stumping him with math problems.
KaiserNeko wrote: I like Yamcha, though. I really do! Much more so before the Saiyan Saga, when he's an actual character who interacts with the plot on a regular basis. He just becomes far less interesting over time as his relationship with Bulma dissipates and he stops trying to be a legitimate contender.
Fair enough.

The point I was trying to make was most characters in the series job excessively.

Well Kaiser, I think you write Yamcha just fine, and if you all[TFS] decide to do Dragonball Abridged, I can't wait to see how funny he can be when he does have some more focus.

Reminder that in the official series, the last fight we really see Yamcha have is when he slips and falls out of the ring during the Bojack movie.

The guy already needed to step up his game in the canon, so DBA is doing just fine.

Yamcha beat The Invisible Man in the comic and won various fights in the anime/movies. To dismiss his victories is just straight-up bias. It'd be like dismissing most of Goku's victories because he didn't win the cleanly.

Still his opponent required help from 1 person, while he required help from 3 persons. :P
That was because of the boobs gag. Puar could have just transformed into a bucket, filled himself with water and thrown water into the ring, making the invisible man visible enough for Yamcha to win.

He also technically beat Saibaiman, and going from around 150, to over 1200 in less than a year, is still very impressive, especially considering how Goku and Piccolo power barely changed during 5 years (With still confuse me, Goku, i understand, he had family life, and didn`t have as much time to train, but Piccolo? He surely was furious for yet another failure, and should trained everyday) his only stupid move (and rest humans) was showing up on Cell Games, with resulted getting more Cell Jr`s. and less senzu beans

Piccolo and Nail's interactions are always amazing.

By the way, is it my ears or is the "Son" in "Son Goku" being mispronounced? Tiny nitpick, not really a big deal, but to me it always sounds like it comes out as "Sun".

Wow, didn't know this was even close to being done. Great surprise on an otherwise dull day.

I can't wait for the Piccolo-Nail-Kami interactions. It's gonna be great.

Another great episode. Have to say I like Krillin's bits the best, though Piccolo and Nail are right up there as well.

Figures Mr. Popo would find a way to take himself out of the equation.

Was that Scott Morgan's new Imperfect Cell theme I just heard near the end?
