Liking or not minding the show being cropped to widescreen is okay. Weird. Misguided. Potentially harmful in the long run. But "okay."

"Moronic" is thinking or claiming that the show is better off or belongs that way. Because that's just wrong.

No, it's okay because Kai is an entirely different show from Z. It's not claiming to be Z. It's not being sold as Z. It's not replacing Z. So for this new product, they can do whatever they want with it. And if it's crap, at least it stands alone as crap. FUNimation is doing all of this crap and actually trying to pass it off as Z.
Not only that, but it's the only way they're selling Z. They don't even offer a 4x3 alternative any longer since the Dragon Boxes.

I love reading stuff like this ''Kai is completely different than Z'' Except...it's..the...Dragonball Z...series...Just called Kai. I don't buy into that at all. Sure it's advertised as something ''New'' & ''Different'' and in many respects it is. but at the same time it's still Dragonball Z re-animated kinda and cuts out filler(sometimes) and with a different musical score until the Yamamoto scandal then they switched back to the original Japanese score making it the same as Z again until we got whoever is doing the new score now for Boo. Don't take this the wrong way as I'm not trying to sound negative towards you but I just don't get how people can not acknowledge that Toei is just releasing Z again with Kai. When I and everyone else buys Kai they're not buying the original series or GT...they're buying Z...Again.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Didnt we have a Funi rep say they just don't care about the aspect ratios?

Also just to add these sets might be crap to a few fans here, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion but They're selling very well and you don't have to support them. Funimation isn't this evil company that everyone makes them out to be. Heck, Toei didn't even bother saving the audio stuff for the series so that shows how much they actually care about it. This series isn't some deity that can't be touched. and like I said in other posts I wished it would have stayed 4x3. but I think people should have a choice to like what they like without being calling moronic fools for liking it. Funimation has done so much for us Dragonball fans and people still don't care. didn't they give us the Dragon-boxes? all the movies? the tv specials? the new battle of gods release? and much more?

Edit - Does anyone have a picture of what the back cover looks like for season 5?

People dont care because they dont know. Go ask a random DBZ fan, let alone a random person and ask them if they know about aspect ratios. It's taking advantage of the lack of knowledge. Honestly it seems like the only DB fans who know even the slightest thing about aspect ratios and how DB should be released on here on Kanzenshuu and thats the problem. The minority knows better but not the majority and Funimation knows that hence the reason releases continue to be in 16:9 and not it's native 4:3 like Kai and the Level sets were.

I never said Kai was "completely different from Z." I said that Z and Kai are two different products, which is something totally different. Is Kai a rehash? Yes. Is it using the same material? Yes. It it so similar that it seems foolish for FUNimation to be treating it as two separate things in regards to its release schedules conflicting with Z because essentially they're competing with their own product? Yes. However, none of that is even remotely relevant to the question you brought up. In regards to what the difference is between these stupid season sets and Kai, the fact of the matter is, Z and Kai are different products. Each one stands alone. You can't compare the two things in this instance. You really can't. What is done to Kai does not affect Z in any way, shape, or form. What is done to the piss poor season sets affects Z in EVERY way, shape, and form. No one complaining about the green tint in Kai is worried about Dragon Ball Z. No one complaining about the dull music in Kai is worried about Dragon Ball Z. No one pulling out his/her own hair over this two different versions of Kai debacle is worried about Dragon Ball Z. Why? Because they're two different things, and no matter how much they screw up Kai, Z is still the same as it ever was.

It seems to me you're letting your indignation at Kai not being brand new from the ground up color your perception of this, so let me ask you something: Are Kyouryu Sentai Zyuranger and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the same show? They have different titles. They have different music. They have different casts. They have different storylines. They are presented and marketed entirely separately from each other. However, they share a lot of the same footage. So by your logic, they're the same show, right?
This series isn't some deity that can't be touched.
It's not a deity, but it is a piece of history. And don't conflate that to mean I'm putting it on a pedestal either. I mean that solely at face value. It is history. It is the past. It is something that happened at one point in time that is no longer now. So to alter it is to alter history. To intentionally alter it is essentially to perpetuate a lie, which is why I never support when someone goes back and alters a film or television show or any other piece of history.
Funimation has done so much for us Dragonball fans and people still don't care. didn't they give us the Dragon-boxes? all the movies? the tv specials? the new battle of gods release? and much more?
Um... no, actually. They sold those to us. And don't think I'm not grateful that they licensed those things, but please don't confuse generous benefactor with business arrangement. Because the fans and FUNimation are solely in the latter camp. They put out a product, and we choose, based on the quality and our desire, to purchase it. The fact that they sold something wonderful like the Dragon Boxes does not give them a free pass when they do something stupid and disrespectful.

I agree with you 100% on that. people should be informed about stuff like that but at the same time...Is there really a point in learning about aspect ratio's for a cartoon? :P

Also if someone can get me a back picture for season 5 Blu-rays that'd be great. I can't find it on google images.

To be 100% honest with you...I don't even know what Kyouryu Sentai Zyuranger and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is? I have never heard of that in my life! the reason why is I haven't watched the power rangers since I was a kid. and I understand that Kai and Z is two completely different products advertising wise. but they are basically the same thing. it's Z. I just don't see what the problem is here with letting someone like what they like without them thinking they're opinion is wrong and they are moronic for liking said thing? you're giving Toei a pass for cropping something that's basically the same even though it's advertised differently? I just disagree with that.

Super Sentai is a Japanese Show, and Power Rangers takes its action footage and makes an American show out of it. I believe Gaffer Tape has a documentary on it on his youtube channel.

Haha yeah I haven't watched the power rangers for a loooooooong time haha I just don't like it when any company crops the shows. regardless if it's Z or Kai. Toei or Funimation.

I feel like this is the equivalent of screaming at a wall, but this post here, it encapsulates everything wrong with this debacle. If FUNimation just put out the show as-is, absolutely no one would be upset that the show wasn't in 16:9, because you have clearly outright stated it doesn't matter to you.

They made a business decision and then flowered it with pretty words, and people ate it up.
samuraix123 wrote:you're giving Toei a pass for cropping something that's basically the same even though it's advertised differently? I just disagree with that.
There is no "pass" being given because they are not editing Z. It is Kai. Kai and Z are separate. They sit next to each other on a shelf and are different. You take Kai, and throw it on the ground, and stomp on it, destroying the box and its contents. Z still sits on the shelf. I don't know how to explain it simpler than that. FUNimation, as of June 25, 2014, does not offer Dragon Ball Z in an unedited format. All uncut versions of Dragon Ball Z's North American releases are sold on the second-hand market and are out-of-production.

EDIT: Here is a better way to explain it: This is the CD Japan link for Dragon Ball Kai Cell/Artificial Human Arc Vol. 12, and this is the CD Japan link to Dragon Ball Z Vol. 1. They are different products.

Yeah it really doesn't matter to me ''To a point'' I've made it clear LOTS! of times that I wished the show was released like the Dragon-boxes and the level sets in it's proper 4x3 but it hasn't been since those releases unless you want to add Kai in the mix. but at the same time I understand from a business point of view that people like the cropped releases. if they didn't they wouldn't be buying them again like they did with the orange bricks. there's a demand for it. Funimation supplies. if fans really wanted a proper 4x3 release why didn't they support the level sets? they wasn't that expensive in my opinion? and I understand it is kinda unfair to them to buy ''THESE'' when the Dragon-boxes just got released and Kai Funi is over saturating the market you'll get no argument from me there.

Edit - I just said above that I understand that they are two completely different products! but they are the same show. Why does is get aired as Dragonball Z kai in the US?????????? because it's Dragonball Z! If it's not then lets all just start saying Kai is a new series that was just made? I mean....it's not Z..even though it has everything Z has.

Wait, what? That doesn't make the least bit of sense. You used to watch Power Rangers, but you've never heard of Power Rangers? Anyway, as for the rest of it, if you weren't aware, every Power Rangers series is made by recycling footage from an equivalent Japanese series known as Super Sentai and adding in some new American footage to make it look like a brand new series. So... yeah, in a lot of ways, very similar to Dragon Ball Kai as opposed to Dragon Ball Z.
and I understand that Kai and Z is two completely different products advertising wise. but they are basically the same thing. it's Z.
No, it's not Z. It's not. It really, really is not. Please address my specific examples as to how nothing done to Kai affects Z, how they stand completely separately. If Kai and Z are the same thing, then why does Z still open with Cha-La-Head-Cha-La instead of Dragon Soul? Why do those terrible reanimated scenes not show up in any release of Z? If they were the same thing, then Z would have all the elements that Kai has.
you're giving Toei a pass for cropping something that's basically the same even though it's advertised differently? I just disagree with that.
No, I'm not. If Toei put out a new release of Dragon Ball Z that was cropped to 16:9, I'd be up in arms. I don't care if they made the series. That's still a stupid and terrible thing to do. Fortunately, they've never done that. "Basically" the same thing is not equivalent to being the same thing. And, yes, I get it. You're frustrated that Kai is a recycled product using mostly unoriginal footage. However, you're so fixated on that, you seem to be completely unable or unwilling to look at this matter from a perspective that's actually relevant to your argument. Even if it is by matter of sheer technicality or any of the flimsiest justifications you can imagine, it still doesn't change the fact that Z and Kai are different products that both exist simultaneously and independently of each other, which makes it an unfair comparison to the Z season set line, which is none of those things.

Or, since B put it so well:
There is no "pass" being given because they are not editing Z. It is Kai. Kai and Z are separate. They sit next to each other on a shelf and are different. You take Kai, and throw it on the ground, and stomp on it, destroying the box and its contents. Z still sits on the shelf. I don't know how to explain it simpler than that.

Because there's still plenty wrong with the Dragon Boxes and owning them doesn't excuse this shitty release.

FUNi's decision to crop the show in the first place has opened up this 'option' for people to think it's acceptable to want what would normally be considered a really fucking stupid thing.

There's no reason to not have a proper Blu-ray of Dragon Ball Z at this point. Absolutely none.

It's fans buying into FUNi's bullshit and FUNi's inability to see why their solid attempt (Level Sets) failed that means we have to endure these releases over and over.

Gaffer Tape I'm sorry I thought I deleted that power rangers part out. sorry for the confusion. And no, I had no idea they recycled things. Since Z & Kai are two completely different things(NOT TALKING ABOUT ADVERTISING WISE) Advertising wise yes they are completely different. But what's Kai about? What content is in Kai? Why is Kai called Z kai in the US? just curious here....

Didnt the Level sets come out shortly after the Boxes?
