I'm curious as to how many people would prefer this over the SSJ we got.

It was so iconic that I can't imagine it some other way at this point, but I don't get what he means by this is how the form would debut as today?

Goku would be extremely skinny a feminine looking, with larger pupils and irises as we see in the image. I can't but think that Toriyama's new style is easily influenced by the popular style of today. But I'm sure there would be a female lead, and I wouldn't be shocked if that female would out-do Goku.

I'm just thinking how much of modern "equality" and feminist ideology affects current media, which would make for an interesting debate. The days of manly men, muscular, saving helpless women is somewhat passé in modern literature, including comics "for children".

I mean, when would you ever see a show like Dragonball, 80's Jojo, or Fist of the North Star in modern manga/anime? You would never see it. I saw a thread here discussing that one piece having that skinny look and no muscular characters, and there are MASSIVE dudes in One Piece, but they usually represent the villain. The protagonists, let alone the main character, being a overly muscular male is rare in modern media.

Honestly, Goku might not be the most jacked up character during the 1980s, he still was massive and had his massive Kaio-Ken x3 form. Plus, progressing into the late 80s and early 90s, the characters got even bigger and more muscular.

Interesting to wonder if styles like manly shonen or Dragonball would be popular/mainstream if created today with those "manly" aesthetics.

I understand those series are still popular, but that is based on historical merit. If created today, it would have to stand up against what's current, not what is historically famous.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

I wouldn't mind if that's how SSJ God turned out. It was just a skinnier base form with red hair so might as well give it blonde hair to keep it consistent with the other three SSJ forms. Then again there wasn't really a point to give it a different look since Goku absorbed that energy into his base. It could've just been Goku's base with a shiny new aura from the beginning of the ritual.

Yup and there would still be people going "OMG Toriyama, this is amazing!", "So simple 10/10  "

I doubt that would be the case. Not everybody worships the grounds that Toriyama walks on. If he does something unsatisfactory, I can assure you that several fans would call out on it.

Wonder if the form would still be called awesome if we kept the physique, but changed the hair and eye colour to this. While watching a kirb blog, he apparently at first didn't know SSJ Goku was even Goku to begin with as a kid. By today's standard this is probably what SSJ would have been, and it'd be not so impressive.

Fair enough. But I feel it hasn't made it to the mainstream heights of what I listed.

Holy crap that's awesome, especially the first one. Can't help but notice the similarities in SSJ Trunks and SSJ2 Teen Gohan's hairstyle though. XD
