I can't speak for everyone, but from what I see, it's generally a case of knowing too much and thinking you know too much but not really knowing enough. It's a gut reaction without putting any perspective at all into context.Gyt Kaliba wrote:As others have pointed out, what...exactly...is silly about alcohol based name puns in a series where our main protagonist's real name is a pun on carrot, his entire race is a pun on vegetables, and their arch-enemy is a refrigerator? I'm sincerely curious as to why alcohol puns are apparently 'a step too far'.
These names have become everyday words and they're not given a second thought anymore. Fans don't think about "Vegeta" as a hysterical name, even when it's the most blatantly obvious even in our own English language. It's just... a name. A dude in a show. That's just his name.
No, he's a vegetable person that is stored in a refrigerator and fights the Special Lactose Squadron. It's fucking hysterical. Don't pretend it's not!

You can ignore Old Man Mike if you want, my dear young viewers, but I've been around long enough to see this every single time a new production is made. "That's a dumb name" and "That doesn't fit" or "That doesn't sound strong".
I generally just roll my eyes with the understanding that in another five years or so, these names will also just become "words" that have no meaning to them anymore and will just be another part of the everyday fandom vernacular that is equally given no second thought.
