Sure Toriyama has involvement in the series, but still debatable since we have two different interpretations of the story, we know Toyotaro has free will for his own ideas and the same could be said about Toei. We also know a time ago Toriyama was dissatisfied with the series, wanting to leave and Toei had to provide him ideas for a new arc. 12: From time to time, it would happen that people whom I didn't even know were approaching me about the anime. Things were often said like: "Oh jeeze, between the manga and the anime, you must never take any time to let yourself breathe!". In reality, I had hardly worked at all on the anime, I had put confidence in my collaborators. I had enough to do just with the manga. I didn't want to work myself to death, you know...
Toriyama: I want to live until I'm 100 years old!
13: For example, drawing an image of a movement in a manga is relatively simple, but to animate this image, you had to decompose the movement and draw all the intermediary movements. That demands a colossal amount of work. (Ok, the example of Kame-sennin might not be the most appropriate...)
14: Of course, those who have read Dragon Ball have noticed that certain stories which are found in the anime didn't existe in the manga.
Oolong: What's this? I never saw that in the manga....
END: As one adventure in the manga corresponds to about 10 minutes of animation, and since one episode comprises on average 30 minutes, the entire series of Dragon Ball would have passed by very quickly. The team of animators therefore had to insert some original stories. I admire what they have done, that's a hell of a job!
Toriyama: "Dragon Ball, it's the anime and the manga!"

Nothing was missed a side story just means "this also happened" Its part of Dragonball and his story as a whole. Side is still PART OF THE STORY it's linked to it. It happens in addition to the rest of the story. Or did you miss that part. GT is part of the anime. That's its place and its role. For instance Wolverines adventures or Nightwing would be considered side stories to X-men or Batman. That doesn't mean they aren't part of the Xmen or Batman universe.Miracles wrote:Did you miss the part where Toriyama said GT is a "Side story" to Dragonball?TheMikado wrote:Eh, just an FYI, if this is your measurement of "canon" than Toriyama also considers GT a continuation of Dragonball.. Did I denied Toriyama is the author of Dragon Ball? No. I said he's not fully in charge of the franchise, he's he is an entity like Toei, Bandai and Shueisha, this is a fact. He saying Dragon Ball Super is the continuation of his story, had nothing to do with canon, but with promotion as this franchise has no offical stated continuity and probably never will. You're forcefully trying to put words on Toriyama mouth also don't change the fact the original work keeps untouchable.Miracles wrote:TOEI didn't say Toriyama only created the series. You didn't. You just copied and pasted quotes of Toriyama explaining to the audience where his new story sets, there's nothing from him, Toei or Shueisha stating the which is the official continuity of the franchise. My assertion is that there's nothing in the original manga that confirms Super may have happened after chapter 517, but contradictions in fact.Miracles wrote:I did...You just ignored all of it. You can't contradict Toriyama who states Super happens months after Majin Buu. Regardless if you like it or not. Toriyama sets Super IN his official work of Dragonball. He didn't say it's outside of Dragonball like GT and the DBZ movies. He is the authority, Super is Dragonball cause it is during Dragonball. Written by Toriyama himself.Noah wrote:You didn't. What you or I have to say on the matter main little in the matter. You can argue with me if you want but both can’t argue with Toriyamas own words. Anyone who’s going to quote him I would suggest getting all quotes on the matter not just the ones you want to mean something.

This interview outright states that GT is a Toei Animation continuation of the series separate from the original manga. The only difference between GT then and Super now is that Toriyama didn't provide outlines for the storyarcs in GT. Ergo, GT is a canon-to-the-anime continuation of the series.Kozo Morishita - Producer of Dragon Ball GT wrote:
The original manga had wrapped up while Dragon Ball Z was still being broadcast, but among myself and others involved there was no sense of “this is the end”. We the staff and of course the TV station and sponsors all wanted the Dragon Ball series to continue in that golden timeslot of 7:00 p.m. every Wednesday. That’s how much momentum and popularity the series had.
The last chapter of the original manga is set ten years after the battle with Majin Boo, so initially the idea was to have anime-original stories depicting the events of those ten years, and various such stories were planned out. Content-wise it was thought that the plot would revolve around the exploits of characters such as Pan or Trunks; in other words, the next generation of children.
Then when word was sent to Toriyama-sensei and the Weekly Shonen Jump editorial department that we wanted to make a new series, after some initial meetings the viewpoint emerged that it would be preferable to do a completely original story, separate from the original manga. Certainly that way, with a “Dragon Ball different than the original manga”, Toriyama-sensei could enjoy it too, and there was also the opinion that it would be terribly disrespectful not to make it a separate work from sensei‘s original manga. With that, it was decided to take it in the direction of depicting events after the original manga’s final chapter. In other words, a style of Dragon Ball that wouldn’t drag out Dragon Ball.
Simple plots made by Toei Animation such as “they travel to these types of planets” were handed over to sensei, and he drew new character drafts and image illustrations for kid Goku, Pan, Trunks, the spaceship, and other major characters.

I'm not contradicting Toriyama as what he said is no outright statement of the official continuity of the series, no matter how hard you try to force that. He would never say something like that about Super as it is a new anime series we got after 18 years. His involvement is what draws people attention and Toei is aware of that, just like Battle Of Gods (2013) that in fact was not his full script.Miracles wrote:You can't contradict Toriyama who states Super happens months after Majin Buu.
