Still inaccurate, but not as much so.
If funimation had the dragon boxes dubbed only would you...

Well the Ocean dub never went back to fix anything, so that would be the more inaccurate. And to be honest, the later Ocean dubbed episodes for some reason absolutely dropped the ball and don't compare to their earlier work. The music is terrible and there is little emotion in the voices. Plus all new characters (like Trunks) sound pretty bad. I was a huge fan of the first two "seasons" that they did, but Youtubing their later stuff is just...terrible.

Although Ocean's movie 3 dub is more accurate than FUNimation's.

Absolutely not, because I could never support this kind of archaic release in this day and age. I do own the dub-only Pioneer dvds of the beginning of the series, but that's entirely because I got the complete collection for $32, I'm a massive Scott McNeil fangirl, and my tapes of this era are only so complete. Mainly it was the $32.
But this isn't 1999, this is now and no respectable company should ever be encouraged to put out English-only anime. Everyone but companies like 4-Kids has grown past that the same way we've grown past flopped manga, and I pray we're never forced to return to those dark times.

And why does everyone always fawn over the Ocean dub?
Sure some of the Voices were good (Son's Voice) but it was still only ever dubbed in Edited for TV versions. So if you bought an Ocean Dub DVD, you'd have to put up with the Music... Tenshinhan's (Sorry, in this Release he'd be Tien) "JUST YOU WAIT UNTIL IT GROWS BACK!!" and Vegeta's "Your Father was a BRILLIANT Scientist!!" ... and that's just the tip of the iceberg...
I'd say the Piioneer Dub from Movies 1-3 was the only flawless one...
Well, for me, it's not so much fawn over the Ocean dub, so much as it's the lesser of two evils.
To me, DBZ has never recieved a completely competent English dub. But between Ocean's voices and Funimation's voices, Ocean's are marginally better. Especially in the main cast of Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, Gohan, and Kuririn.
They both screwed up characters like Freeza, the Ginyu Force, and Kaio.
(I refer you to my article in my sig...)

I'd say that Funi's dub is far closer to competent than Ocean dub for Seasons 4-9. It had consistent voice actors, and a theme song that wasn't complete shit.

Consistently bad voices, though. Funimation had a more accurate script for their dub, but their character voices were absolutely horrific.jjgp1112 wrote:I'd say that Funi's dub is far closer to competent than Ocean dub for Seasons 4-9. I greatly disagree with you, but to each his own. Let's just leave it at a difference of opinion.

If you're going by the general Ocean cast Seasons 1 & 2 then maybe you're right, but in the case of the Pioneer releases of DBZ movies 1-3 the scripts are the most accurate any dub has been for DBZ.penguintruth wrote:Consistently bad voices, though. I'd like to note, though, that there are two Ocean cast dubs of the third movie. One that was broken down into three episodes and had US broadcast music and then there's the movie version with the Japanese music.
Becuase the DBZ anime is still full of horrible art, shoddy animation, and bullshit filler no matter if it's widescreen or fullscreen, bright colors or faded, English or Japanese.DemonRin wrote:Why is the word quality in quotation marks?...Rocketman wrote:No, because I don't care enough about the Dbox' s 'quality' to pay more for its footage.

Huh, you know, I'd forgotten about that! So, does the broadcast version have Corlett or Kelamis?

The TV broadcast version, aired during the second season, uses music from the then-TV-dub-broadcast musical score (Shuki Levy's) and features Ian Corlett as Goku. It also censors quite a bit (the magical floating bush) and has a couple minor snippets of TV episode footage (mostly of Kaio, I think) spliced in.penguintruth wrote:Huh, you know, I'd forgotten about that! The VHS/LD/DVD version features Kelamis (and a couple other minor re-castings, like Kame-Sen'nin and Oolong), the original Japanese musical score, pretty faithful dialogue, etc.

Ah, I didn't know that. Like I said, it's been a long time.
I do remember them splitting the movies up. Or at least one of them. Movie 3? I think you even might have mentioned that recently in a podcast.

As for whomever asked why people fawn over Ocean- it's because there's a portion of us who grew up with and loved those voices. Yes, the script and the music and the editing were terrible, but I grew attached to those guys all the same. Like for myself personally, despite knowing the original and other versions Ted Cole is simply the voice of Yamcha, and Ian Corlett is the way Son Goku sounds when he's young. When new voices were suddenly shoved on us and everyone sounded like wrestlers they'd picked off the streets of Dallas, it was jarring and upsetting. And it doesn't hurt that being from Philly in the 90's I had certain issues with Dallas to begin with >_>
Ocean also worked in a number of my other absolute favorite shows (Beast Wars and Gundam Wing) and having met Scott McNeil in person I can tell you he's an awesome guy. Basically, I like that cast in general, not just their Dragonball work, and I didn't like having a new cast i didn't personally cared for shoved on me when tv was the only was I could watch the show. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, and that's mine.

I'm more of a Kelamis guy myself. I always thought Corlett sounded a little stiff, whereas Kelamis made Goku sound light-hearted and carefree. It's too bad that he barely got a run in.
Scott McNeil, Brian Drummond, Saffron Henderson, and Terry Klassen also have places in my heart.
I loved Drummond's pointed, halting way of talking as Vegeta. He made him sound so smug.
Never cared much for either dub's versions of Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and others.

It's interesting the difference a budget and a good voice director can make.
