He was originally named Soba, the name being used (I think) only once, in an off-hand manner in the manga.
Then when the time came about to make the Dragon Ball anime, Akira Toriyama completely forgot that he had, at one time, given a name to this side character and came up with another one, Shu.
Since then "Shu" has generally superseded "Soba" due to its more frequent use in the anime and is generally considered a revision.

His name is also Shu in the FUNimation dub.

For the most part, but the original 1995 dub of DB 1-13 called him Shao, and FUNimation reused most of those scripts when they redubbed those episodes, so he was still called Shao in the 2001 in-house version. Shu didn't start until the Red Ribbon episodes, so yay for extra confusion. But shaomai is the Mandarin equivalent for shuumai, so maybe they originally figured it would be easier to get the pun by changing it, to keep people from thinking of shoes instead.Metalwario64 wrote:His name is also Shu in the FUNimation dub.

But he's always been referred to as Shu in my Season One set...TripleRach wrote:Shu didn't start until the Red Ribbon episodes
To be honest I'd never even heard of the name Shao until this thread.

Shao was in the original FUNi dub of the first thirteen episodes. I know this because:
1) When the RR arc was airing on Toonami, I remember being weirded out at "Shu."
2) I've never seen the first thirteen episodes of the original dub by... Harmony Gold? Or whoever, so FUNi had to have used it.
But yeah, the Season Sets make his name consistent with the use of Shu. I don't know if the original FUNi singles did this or not.

Harmony Gold did only 2 episodes, and 1 movie (combining 1 and 3). In 1995, little FUNimation started up the dub with Kidmark/Trimark/Lionsgate.B wrote:Shao was in the original FUNi dub of the first thirteen episodes. I know this because:

Maybe it was Shao in the Edited TV version of the FUNimation dub, and was Shu on the uncut DVD sets and the Season Sets?B wrote:But yeah, the Season Sets make his name consistent with the use of Shu. I don't know if the original FUNi singles did this or not.

Shu was present on the original FUNimation singles. Don't know about the Red Ribbon Army saga, as I just had King Piccolo saga on DVD.Metalwario64 wrote:Maybe it was Shao in the Edited TV version of the FUNimation dub, and was Shu on the uncut DVD sets and the Season Sets?B wrote:But yeah, the Season Sets make his name consistent with the use of Shu. I guess it's safe to assume that FUNimation went back and corrected that for their uncut dub. Anyone with the Madman sets care to chime in as to whether or not the "Saga of Goku" episodes use Shu? I would think so since they stopped "re-dubbing" when the GT sets came out, so I guess that since the Season One set calls him Shu, then the original uncut dub would as well... Maybe they just used the old Ocean cast dubbed version's scripts verbatim for the edited TV rub?Shigeru wrote:Shu was present on the original FUNimation singles. Too bad that you weren't around when the original artist was here... Although it might also be a good thing as well. It spawned some great moments in the very least:

The art was epic either way, but I'm getting off-topic so I'll leave it at that.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
