Re: Linda Young not to voice Freeza in the Dragon ball Kai dub?
Ya know, I'm always cautious about criticizing voice actors on message boards because I know they read them from time to time. So normally I only write if I have good things to say.
TANGENT ALERT: And before I go any further, let me say this to people who say, "Voice actors shouldn't care about what the message boards think." I don't know about whether they should or shouldn't, but it's not totally absurd if they do care. Actors perform for audiences. If actors didn't care about performing for audiences, in theory they could act for a wall and be satisfied. That's not what acting is about, though, it's about telling a story to an audience. So, in my mind, it's not totally absurd that voice actors occasionally want to know if their performance is being perceived as good or not.
END TANGENT ALERT
Anyway. I thought about whether or not I would bring that up, but I didn't want to start a separate thread over it, especially since it's just a passing thought. Back to business. I hate to speak badly of Linda Young, but she was never a good choice for Freeza purely by way of the fact that she was a woman. I never cared for Goku's Japanese voice because it was a woman, and I never cared for Freeza's English voice for the exact same reason. The fact that she was given a mangled script didn't help matters. She's done a decent job in other animes, too, but...
I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED I'M ABOUT TO EXPLODE!!!!!!!
Well...I'm tempted to say, "let the speculation begin," but I'd rather not do that. I'll just trust that Chris picked a good voice and wait to be surprised.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:

A new Freeza is excellent news. Hopefully this new VA will be able to capture more of Freeza's casual wickedness. (Or should I say, formal wickedness?) I suspect a better script will also help.
The more recasts, the better, as far as I'm concerned. At least up until the Androids and Cell. Maybe a new Android 16 after that, but other than that, the voices are fine for later DBZ.

Excellent news I'm personally hoping for Micheal Tatum to voice Freeza rather than Jewel.

Those of us who know the big surprise also know who will be playing him, unfortunately Sabat swore the whole room to secrecy, and if they haven't revealed who it is yet, I don't think it would be right to tell yet, sorry.
But I will say for those of you hoping for Tatum, it's not him.

Re: Linda Young not to voice Freeza in the Dragon ball Kai dub?
From what little I've heard of Japanese Frieza, it seems like the closest English voices to him would be Chuck Huber and Kent Williams, and those two themselves have pretty damn similar voices. I always get confused between their roles. Even Funi is aware of that, as they had them play two siblings, Mercenary Tao (Williams) and Crane Hermit (Huber).DemonRin wrote:Those of us who know the big surprise also know who will be playing him, unfortunately Sabat swore the whole room to secrecy, and if they haven't revealed who it is yet, I don't think it would be right to tell yet, sorry.

I'm gonna make a wild guess, I'm thinking it's Kenny Green. What I've heard in One Piece, he sort of has some potential to be a good Freeza. Todd Haberkorn, Chuck Huber and Kent Williams too.

Re: Linda Young not to voice Freeza in the Dragon ball Kai dub?
Dang it! Why am I always late to the party? I just saw this video on Youtube and I have to say, I am excited. I liked Linda Young's Freeza(oh god, don't hurt me) but I want to see what they do with this new voice. So far I have loved every recast Funimation has made so I'm sure they'll keep up the good work. In my books, Funimation is totally out doing Toei with their handling of Kai.
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

But not "King Kai", I presume?Kirbopher wrote: Also, as it's been stated already, Freeza's not the only one getting a new voice. In fact I'll go as far to say that prettymuch all of Freeza's henchmen are getting voice changes, as far as I know.

Nah, Sabat and Vale were really cool to tell what they did at that panel, all they asked was to keep the information a secret, so it's only cool to honor their one request.dragonpiece wrote:I got a idea, get another account with some random name and tell us who is playing Freeza!DemonRin wrote:Those of us who know the big surprise also know who will be playing him, unfortunately Sabat swore the whole room to secrecy, and if they haven't revealed who it is yet, I don't think it would be right to tell yet, sorry.

I will say though, his VA is a REALLY good choice.
It's the voice of a man who's gonna change The Dragon Ball Fanbase's destiny. When the time comes, we should burn the sound of his voice into our memories.
Also, to add onto what Kirbopher said, you guys are gonna LOVE the new Zarbon.

Chuck Huber was my vote, too. Still, the mere fact that it will be a man will be an improvement in and of itself. Even if it isn't Huber, FUNimation now has (as Chris noted) a ton of actors to select from, so I doubt it will be a bad choice. I honestly think the worst case scenario is that the new voice will be "just okay." And that in and of itself will be a huge improvement.
But...still...MUST...resist...the...urge...TO SPECULATE...!

Huber would be an excellent choice, but he's already pretty prominent as Android 17.

Re: Linda Young not to voice Freeza in the Dragon ball Kai dub?
Ugh, I hate the gender logic that flits around here like so many pesky flies. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with Freeza being portrayed by a woman, just like I don't think there's anything wrong with Goku being portrayed by a woman. And Freeza being recast with a male won't automatically make it right. He could get Reacoom's voice! Would that still be better just because it's a man?!
That said, doesn't necessarily mean the woman they initially chose for Freeza was great, and that doesn't mean I don't think the new replacement won't be great (or at least good). I'm just sick of the gender bias (on both sides). I don't care what genitalia an actor has; if he/she has the chops to pull of a certain role, then throw them in the recording booth. If not, then don't. That's as simple as it gets!

Then recast Android 17. No offense to any 17 fans out there, but the character's not nearly as interesting as Freeza (in my humble and certainly non-definitive opinion).penguintruth wrote:Huber would be an excellent choice, but he's already pretty prominent as Android 17.

Re: Linda Young not to voice Freeza in the Dragon ball Kai dub?
Yeah Zarbon's new actor is perfect as well, Chris was really resistant to give him up at the time I spoke with him, so it looks like by the time he came up in the episodes, he decided to pass him on. As mentioned in another thread, that'll be the case for the Ginyu Force as well, he'll be giving most, if not all, of the members he voiced, up. Oh also pretty sure Mike will be doing Dodoria now, as he did in Raging Blast, but that one's not 100% definite.
